It's somewhat indefinable, but there's something sad about turning these classic silent comedians into talking caricatures. You just can't reproduce the magic of Steamboat Bill, Jr, The General, The Navigator, Sherlock Jr. et al, in this dialog rich format, because Buster was a physical comedian, and nobody was better, but that brilliance gets drowned out by all the unnecessary sound and talking of which this lame short is a prime example. He was truly a pentaamine artist of his time, and his time was the silent era. Chaplin knew it, that's why he never allowed the Tramp to talk, because he knew it would ruin the character, but Keaton just didn't have that kind of power, and because he was broke he had to make junk like this. It's best to ignore his talkies altogether and concentrate on his many, many silent classics which will last as long as time does.

To all the purists: Mr.Keaton needed the money and he liked to work.

What? Plenty of his talkies are great. Obviously not masterpieces like his silents, but to say they shouldn’t be watched is stupid.

This type of comedy worked for Laurel & Hardy and the three Stooges. But not for Buster. He was made for the silent era.

Always read about this era being awful for him, yet this has some good laughs and the bonus of Vernon Dent.

He was uncomfortable talking. He was a physical gag guy.

This is dreadful compared to his best work. So sad to see who I consider to have been one of the greatest comedians of all time reduced to this. Storyline awful. Some of the jokes recycled from his earlier films. I know he had lost control of his own films by then. The studios did not know how to use his amazing talent.
