After over 100 years Mabel Normand still has that raw sex appeal and her outfit only highlights this. What folks don't know is that Charlie was a nobody when he came to the US. It was Mabel that persuaded the studio heads to give him a chance.

Charlie's rival in this 1914 film was Mack Swain. After Charlie soon became internationally famous and completed his classic set of the Mutual series of shorts, Charlie asked Mack to join him in the next important stage of his career, when he made his First National shorts, including The Idle Class, Payday, and The Pilgrim. And when Charlie went fully independent and planned his feature film The Gold Rush, Charlie again hired Mack Swain in a lead role as Charlie's fellow prospector. The Gold Rush became one of Chalie's best films ever and he and Mack are fantastic together in it. Charlie had always considered The Gold Rush to be one of the films he would be remembered by. It's certainly one of my favorites.

Saw the Gold Rush in 1981 as a freshman in college and was blown away. A huge Chaplin fan ever since. So hilarious and so moving at the same time.

Even if you went to the past, you wouldn't get their original colours. Suppose you are in the past, they wouldn't allow you to watch live shooting. You would only get the B&W recording. And forget their voice or sound, because they seldom speak during shooting as they know their performance is based on actions. Even if they spoke, again they wouldn't allow you to watch live shooting.

What is your opinion of colorazation of old movies? I never used to like it, but recently I have changed my mind. If the old B/W prints are available and the colorazation is done carefully then I am all for it.

This coloration is amazingly well done, and I think it is great that we have the possibility to see it that way. Still, I prefer to view black and white film in the original version. I am afraid I consider coloration kind of faking history. I understand, that the colours probably appeal to younger generations, but I'm happy as long as we also have the possibility to see the original version for those of us that are old enough to remember when many films were still made in black and white - we had only black and white television anyway .....

I remember watching some Keystone Chaplin films on television many years ago. They were in deplorable condition. The films were scratched up and skipped. They were in black and white. Also, seemed to be played at a faster speed. So many scenes were cut that it made little sense of what was going on. These new colorized films are beautiful! I can read lips somewhat and can make out what they say at times. Though the plots of the Keystone films are lame by today's standards. It's still nice to see what they originally were meant to be.
