I met Lauren in 1992 or 1993 when she did a book signing in boca Raton, florida, at Liberty book store. There was a huge line up to get her autograph with purchase of her book, I bought the soft copy and she really wasnt supposed to sign soft copy only the more expensive hard copy, when I got to the front of the line somebody said sorry Lauren will only sign hard copy books, but being the wonderful person she was, she called me over and signed my book anyways against the rules....that was a class act, what a classy lady..I love her😘

Marilyn was a dreamer, childlike, sweet, fearful. And terribly insecure. Striking comparison to Bacall, who was in total possession of herself and her own prowess, ballsy even. Strong. Direct. Witty. Lovely that they got along and that Bacall could see to the heart of Monroe; that she was able to recognize that there was no malice in her, and she did nothing out of spite or meanness. Still so sad to me that Monroe never truly seemed to find long lasting, protective and unconditional love from anyone, in her entire life. She had everything, and she had nothing...

Lauren was consistent about Marilyn over decades, so you know it's true. Marilyn seems to have been well liked and understood by her female co-stars. You'd think maybe they'd resent potentially being outshone by her but I can't think of any that turned on her later. That says a lot about them and a lot about her. The 🎥 loved Marilyn. Even without makeup or costume, she could still wow any camera within feet of her. Such was her beauty. Marilyn Monroe was quite literally a creation. Like John Wayne or Roy Rogers and so many others during the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's. Even now, today, Hollywood still creates. She defined femininity. Her look was copied by many, but never replicated. Some came close. Like Jane Mansfield, but no women ever surpassed Marilyn in terms of true beauty both on and off set. Even by today's standards ( which in my opinion, are much lower ) Marilyn clearly looks far more beautiful verses any actress today. What I find so very compelling and I truly believe this to be a truth about Marilyn, is, how can one be so beautiful, so very popular and yet......be so very alone! She was, without a doubt, intelligent. Yet, her desire to be respected, was often hampered by her inability to simply believe in herself. Many of her contemporaries have indeed stated this. Of course in their own way. Marilyn was and is, in my opinion, the single greatest example of a star who rises fast, but falls just as hard. What ever happened that day in her home may never really ever be known. I just wish she had had friends close by to watch over her. People she could trust........

It’s too bad Marilyn couldn’t find true contentment with Joe DiMaggio. I believe she was the only love of his life. She just never learned to love herself, so she wasn’t capable of loving the men in her life - in a contented way.

I think she was more of a model than an actress. She was so photogenic and knew exactly what she was doing when posing, but was very insecure about her acting. She needed no improvement when modeling but always felt she needed to keep improving her acting and was never secure with her performances. But, get her in front of a camera for stills or just panning, she was the best.

J kK the fact that she wanted to improve her acting is a good thing. If every artist think they are perfect then why bother? Have you seens her movies? She's awesome.

I think J KK has hit the nail on the head...Lawrence Olivier said exactly the same thing....she was a model who was kinda forced to act, and she was more insecure about her acting, as she knew she looked good and was comfortable with posing....She often said she was shy having to speak in public, so I think she created some kind of persona, rather than her real self on screen. A lot of shy people do that in order to be able to present themselves in public. Of course she was insecure, she had nobody really...no fabric of family....her mother sent away to a psychiatric facility, fostered out as a youngster, she was never sure of her father, although she did find cousins & aunts and some extended family who I know she spent time with during her life. It would have been nice for her to have had a husband and children to give her that family atmosphere I think she craved.....I always get that she was a bit lonely but got used to it as she didn't really know anything else. I don't think she was totally naive, I think she got to know the way of the business and learned as she went on through experience. She was desperate to hone her craft as an actress, and one of the bravest things she did I think was to go to the Actor's Studio when she was already an accomplished Hollywood movie star, and sit with these extremely good actors without the frills or the pomp and ceremony she carried with her. I don't think she was hugely promiscuous going off today's standards...she was married only twice, had a miscarriage, and had a fling with a President, we don't really know of any other dalliances, we are just guessing. The pills she took tainted her behaviour later on, but I never heard her say a bad word about anyone!....
@cellis30455 жыл бұрын
@blanche kiernan Err Lawrence Olivier may have had limitations as a man, a human being in real life...but as an actor, he was BRILLIANT, and to say Marilyn was on the same acting par as him is ridiculous....She worked hard to be a good actress, she tried, but she was exactly what he said she was....a model who was forced to act. Marilyn was first and foremost a model. She was comfortable in that area, knew who to work the camera and was very photogenic. She had sexual charisma, was an extraordinary pretty, and attractive looking woman, and gifted with star quality...but a 'great actress'?...Sorry, she wasn't. She was like John Wayne, a personality with charisma, a strong presence, and star quality on screen...but great actors they were not...they just basically played themselves!..

She describes the vulnerable insecure foster child that was Norma Jean Baker. This delicate side of her nature came out in her rolls on the screen. Her body language and those close-up facial expressions. The camera picked up every emotion in that beautiful face, and those EYES. Those wide open sparkling sad eyes. Mental disease is a horrible thing, and back then the treatment was very institutionalized with all the straight jackets and lobotomies. Her mother was in an asylum. No treatment for her mania spells, therefore Marilyn took pills like so many in Hollywood. Pills to wake up, go to sleep, anxiety pills, pills for depression, and she became an addict on top of a career where the industry will eat you alive, and a public figure.

If your doing uppers to stay thin, then downers to sleep you wake up groggy. You need time to wake up mentally. Reminds me of judy garland near the end. I bet that coach made marilyn feel insecure to keep her job. She would deflect to her, should I do it again? Im sure that coach kept her off balance to keep her cushy job.

Olivier was a snob. When you watch The Prince and the Showgirl which they did together you can tell Marilyn is a movie star who knows how to act on camera. Olivier is still playing to the balcony and it doesn't make for a great screen performance.

@@Reprodestruxion According to other Directors and fellow actors, Laurence Olivier clashed with Directions. Director's had problems with him because of his temperament. Director's stated that the conflict was caused because Olivier was a stage actor and not a film actor. Because of this, Director's said Olivier over acted. Sybil Thorndike who played the Queen Dousher had a very high regard's for Marilyn's acting skills. This is why I think Oliver and Marilyn clashed. Marily being a film actress and Olivier being a stage actor.

I have always admired Bacall 's honesty. Based on many stories I am glad however never to have been witness to her "imperious ness and cruelty" . The quote is from Leonard Bernstein 's daughter.
@Jasper71820095 жыл бұрын
hnc52 .... I would like to hear someone else corroborate that. I haven’t read that many comments, but of all the comments that I’ve seen on KZbin, Lauren Bacall was a great, down to earth, wonderful lady. A true Mensch, a true human being, very honest and possessing an insight into people. This is the first negative comment I’ve ever seen about Ms. Bacall. And I’ll take it ... with a grain of salt.
@spooks94824 жыл бұрын
Jasper7182009 Lauren Bacall was all the traits you mentioned. Very blunt, honest, worldly and insightful. Great at seeing both sides of a situation. However especially in her younger years she was well known for having a fiery temper. I wouldn’t call her cruel but sometimes she could be uncaring of others feelings. An example of this would be telling Shelly Winters her husband is having an affair in this way. “I've been waiting for Tony for an hour. Where the hell is he?” Asked Bacall Shelley said, "You're complaining to me because my husband is late for a date with you?". Bacall answered, "If your husband doesn't respect your marriage, why should I?".

I believe, as Bacall said, that Marilyn was "totally self- involved" and "didn't connect with anybody". I bet she never had any female friends, because she wasn't interested in having any. Becall also said that Marilyn never looked in the other actor's eyes when doing a scene. That says a lot.

Marilyn complained about Hollywood later, but let's face it she knew how to work it and she loved attention. She created the "Marilyn" character, but later complained about not getting more serious roles. It's very difficult to be pushing a sex symbol persona and then expect audiences to see you as this dramatic actress. She loved the attention of the sex symbol she created, but also wanted the accolades of the more dramatic roles. Oh! well....

I understand what you're saying completely but at least people can appreciate Marilyn's acting and deeper sides to her personality now that she's gone. Her role in 'Don't Bother to Knock' proved she had some range as well as movies like 'The Misfits' and 'Bus Stop.' I love that she enjoyed reading and took acting classes at one stage, formed her own production company and helped the career of Ella Fitzgerald. She was quite a lady :)

Lauren Bacall had her own insecurities. But you would have never known it. Becos she was so bold. And beautiful. Her lack of confidence in some areas were shielded by her early marriage to old Hollywood actor Humphrey Bogart. From a very young age she was introduced and socialised only with all the Hollywood A Listers. A perfect life. Once Bogart died she started to make mistakes. The kinda mistakes many women make. Marrying a 2nd time. To Mr Wrong. And a much younger Mr Wrong too. In her case it was actor Jason Robards. An alcoholic . But before that she managed to ruin her engagement and subsequent possible marriage to Frank Sinatra. That wasn’t really her fault. But with Sinatra she should have known she needed to be far more careful with Sinatra. She knew him well enough for years prior. His fickle ways. And temper tantrums.

There were many beautiful actresses in their time and I like that compared to the current time, none of them ever spoke badly to each other or about them, rather they tried to understand each other or they didn't have that egocentricity that they believed themselves better, they just knew it was them and that's it.
@bebek93094 жыл бұрын
All I see in the comments who is better? Who's sexier? I honestly love them both, they are two different actors with two different styles 😍 back then in Hollywood a lot of actress butchered Marilyn Monroe name out of jealousy and her high fame. I ONLY see *Jane Russell Lauren Bacall Betty Grable and Joan Collins* admire her and spoke nothing negative about her. Like Lauren said she wasn't bitching and never try take anyone spotlight just sweet and innocent

She was (practically) an orphan after her mom got institutionalized. Then she got taken in by Hollywood at a very young age. In my opinion, that's enough to severely damage someone in life. It may not hurt someone long term if they have the coping tools going into life, however, without these, she was already lost going in to this situation. And then some people expected her to be perfect, and be able to assimilate into real life (much less Hollywood!) (What did we expect she was going to be?) Even though they took her in (saw potential) they still told her she wasn't good enough, and gave her multiple surgeries in order to fashion her into the perfect being they could exploit, and made her change her name (causing her to further detach from who she was before). The poor thing could never (would never be able) to fully appreciate her position. She had awareness of how great she was... of her position... but she would always have trouble accepting that she could be what she was (given her previous rejections in life), and also feeling like she was just appreciated for the new-improved (fake) esthetic version of herself. She went into everything lacking the base of a solid familial foundation, and cried inside (so wanting to share everything with someone familiar). On top of that, she knew that the admiration of her was probably a byproduct of the "improvements", and she could never fully accept that people accepted her for her true self (she would assume people only accepted her for her new exterior veneer she'd become). And if someone insulted her intelligence? This was like daggers on an already defensively uncertain (wounded), empty, soul. This was something more (that she felt she'd have to prove herself on). She couldn't stand the negative, because she was already feeling bad about the fact that she felt (her former self) was negated until Hollywood glamorized her. So in an attempt to circumvent more attacks on her, she attempted to buck her iconic image, and immerse herself within intellectual people and activities. The fame shock and lack of family shock (not knowing who was actually "there" for her) was a dichotomy in which she was in limbo, and never truly knew how to fill that void. (She never had any good previous examples.) ❤ For people to say, "She seemed only halfway there" was not a detriment to her character, but rather a sad fact that this very young woman was trying to find herself after having been thrown into a sea of exploitation, (with only a fraction of the experience and support that most people have) Life experiences and support could have assisted her in having the perspective and objectivity to determine good from bad. She was, sadly, the lamb for exploitive people. (Anyone who says she asked for this doesn't consider what I just wrote.) My heart goes out to her. ❤
