you are the only person who made a video with this specific need in mind! it's exactly what i needed in my guitar journey and i can't thank you enough! i just couldn't figure out what was wrong with my sound, i've got rhythm and numerous strumming patterns, and i'm like why don't i sound like good players, other than i'm newish! it was this, holding the pick too tight, for fear of losing grip and not angling it enough, thank you Lauren!

So happy I came across you on KZbin. I am 50. I used to play a bit (self taught) when I would sing at country oprys off and on when I was 25. Back then I had a music book and learned chord that way. My bf just bought me a mini Martin and I am so happy and obsessed and excited and can’t stop playing. Thank you for all the songs and strumming techniques!!

@@LaurenBateman Well Lauren, I’m gonna try and keep this comment from turning into a novel, but I want you to know what you did for me, so get your reading glasses on. VVVVV I’m 26 years old, never played an instrument, I was a talented athlete from my first step, so that was my focus, but In the back of my head, I always wanted to play something. Fast forward to now, I’m a little over a year in recovery, and I have a window of free time after work and before bed where I’m all alone and have nothing to do. This triggers my anxiety and loneliness. I’ve been trying to find something positive and productive to fill this gap. I decided to give guitar a try, a buddy let me use his old Washburn. I spent a week watching videos, downloading apps, and nothing clicked. I only got discouraged and was convinced that it just wasn’t for me, I wasn’t capable. I was about 2 more videos away from giving up, and I landed on a Lauren Bateman beginner lesson, and finally made some progress. I ended up watching for about 2 hours straight, and by the end I was playing chords ! I spent a whole week trying different apps and videos and never got past holding the guitar. Now I am 4 days into training via your videos and I can play some simple songs, switch chords, tune my guitar! But the best part is I found something that fills my void, I love the feeling I get while I play, my anxiety is gone when I’m strumming, I don’t feel lonely when I’m watching you on my laptop, and following along. You have made a huge difference in my life and you should feel great about it !!

I use a 3mm Dunlop Stubby triangular pick, what I do, I smooth the ends rounder with either emery paper or some sandpaper and finish it off with fine sandpaper or emery paper, so the ends are nice and smooth and rounder. I seem to get a nice smooth sound strumming and lead playing . Try it out. Takes a while to adjust to the thick gauge, definitely try a 3mm round edge pick and shape the ends more rounder and smoother. With the thickness of the pick and the shaping of the ends, you get a quality smooth sound. I am going to try a 5mm pick and do the same round and smooth the ends of the pick, see what occurs, see if it's any different.

I saw a video when I first began my guitar that suggested that I hold my pick downward at a 45 degree angle while I strum. So I tried it, but all it did was make a zipper sound across the strings. It didn't sound like a strum at all. I still struggle with strumming, and I'm horrible at up strums for some reason. I don't really know why I'm struggling with something that seems so simple, but I'm still working at it. I need to work on gliding as you've suggested here, so I've gotten some softer picks. I also finally got a capo, so now I can follow all of your lessons.

A lot of people think I play like 2 people at the same time,but my technique wasn't overnight, it took a year on acoustic guitar to get to that point, is it my guitar yes and no,yes it's a $3k guitar but I went through 12 other guitars to get to that point,my first acoustic was from a pawn shop in Atlanta, 100 bucks,wrote 32 songs on it,But I soon discovered a whole world of different acoustic guitars when I went to the guitar center,I saw 2400.00 taylor,I wanted to clean houses wipe walls down mop floors whatever, I had to have that guitar and I had a good fulltime job,I wanted that guitar now,!!!🤗 I'm glad I waited for my Taylor builders Edition 324ce,I was armed and ready!!! HEY!!!....Mrs Bateman🥰🥰🥰

Lauren this is kind of off subject but can you please explain the importance of learning first position. I am over 60 and I am taking guitar lessons. Total beginner.here, but in the beginning my instructor stressed the importance of first position and since I haven't been able to master that I have developed some kind of a mental block and I can't move forward. I also wanted to mention that I bought a parlour size guitar thinking it would help my playing but it really hasn't. I am really enjoying your lessons thanks so much!
@LaurenBateman
@LaurenBateman 3 жыл бұрын
Isabel, first position is referred to as the first 3 frets of the guitar. Your instructor is right. We also call this open position because the chords learned at this point are open, not barred. Barre chords are very difficult for beginner to learn. Learn your open chords first, A, Am, C, D, Dm, E, Em, Fmaj7, G and you will be able to play many songs.

Great lesson! I learned more from this 8 minute video than I feel like I've learned in years on my own or with a guitar teacher! You have a really good way of breaking things down to the basics that is hard to capture in guitar instruction videos or that guitar teachers seem to gloss over. Now I KNOW why my guitar strumming has sounded bad in the past compared to other players who picked up the same guitar: the strumming dynamics. Thanks for the great lesson, I may very well sign up for more :)

Hi Donald, they will, but I recommend making sure you have a very clean guitar tone on your amp if you're using one. Anything with distortion will not sound good at all.

loving your lessons Lauren. I'm a beginner but started doing stage stuff at our local jam club. Only then did I learn the need to mute strings when going electric !!! I think this would be good to do with beginners like me as I had to change my technique a little to adapt and I'm a slow learner (age 63!!)
