I love the approach you have for providing guidance on options. The one and two finger versions really open up the instrument to a wider "learning" audience. I think I tried the 2 finger version about this time last year (when I was re-starting my guitar journey). With practice, I was able to quickly transition to the 3 finger version with my ring finger on 1st string. Then I found the value of the 4 finger version with some songs I've tried out.

Extremely useful information. I don't normally use the one and two finger formations. I use the rest of the formations all the time, and use the formation which is most convenient for me. Also, I use fingers 1-2-3 interchangeably with 2-3-4 depending on efficiency at a particular moment. Thanks for the video Lauren...Tony Avitua

Hey Lauren, there is 6th way to play a G chord. I learned this from Gary Talley who was (and still is) lead guitarist for the Box Tops. You’re probably too young to have heard of them, but the 1st record they recorded went to #1, “The Letter”. Put you second finger on the E string (3rd fret) and mute the A string and put your index finger on the little e string (3rd fret). Wal-la, you have a G chord. I use it all the time. Makes transition to E minor so easy.

Great video explaining all the various G Chords. I've been waiting for this vides cause I originally learned your 3rd version of the G chord to start but have notice a lot of songs that have a CGD chord progression use your version 2 as it seems to be an easier transition from C. I prefer the two finger version. I can do the three finger, but not consinstantly , yet. My ring finger is rebelelling and/or the second finger moves when I try for the three finger version. Not a pleasant sound,. I am enjoying your relaxed teaching method of using songs to motivate learning cords. Playing the songs shows progress that motivates me to play more often. That and I recently moved from a dreadnought to a fender classic concert solid top (Fender) and the size is more comfortable. It is eassier to play, so I play more. Thanks.

Hi Lauren! I have two thoughts. 1. For the 3-finger G chord I like to use my 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers because it makes for an easier transition between G and C (which is a very common chord progression). The 2nd and 3rd fingers come down, lift off the 4th finger and put the 1st finger down for the C chord. I find it helpful to do it that way. 2. The four finger G chord is beneficial because, again, it makes for a very easy change from G to Cadd9 (first two fingers come down and that's it). Just my two cents worth...
@LaurenBateman2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the player. I find using the pinky very awkward with my smaller hand shape.
@jesseross60292 жыл бұрын
@@LaurenBateman I can understand that. It was only a suggestion, and like I said, having the 2nd and 3rd fingers as anchor points to change to the C chord proved to be very helpful. That's just in my experience though. Take care and keep those lessons coming!

Thank you for this lesson on the G chord, Lauren. I'm an adult with small hands and short fingers and have been struggling with the G chord. I started with the 2 finger version and tried the 3 finger version with my 3rd finger on the high E. I just don't have enough reach to play the G that way without muting the A string with my 2nd finger. So, I am trying to do the 3 finger version using my pinky on the high E. It is a very shaky process for me, and I'm still having a lot of trouble landing the 1st and 2nd fingers on the A and low E string quickly quickly and accurately. I may just be stuck with playing the 2 finger version. Moving from D chord to G chord quickly has been quite frustrating and challenging. Bar chords are probably not in my future as my index finger will only reach across 5 strings at best, so at this time, I'm having to determine what is within my hand size limitations.

Don't know about the masses, but I'd love to know who Lauren's favorite artists are...it's obvious you have an eclectic taste (PS Everyone thinks they have an eclectic taste in music, but most don't, they just want to appear open-minded and worldly). Taylor Swift fans don't own any Carly Simon or Dolores O'Riordan albums. My guitar "hero" is Brian Setzer from the Stray Cats and Brian Setzer Orchestra. He was my son's first concert and the promoter thought we were so "cute" father and son dressed in Rockabilly garb, that he let us take pics with each of us holding one of Setzer's signature Gretsch guitars (-;/

If you get a chance, check out a few of her live performances of "Crazy On You" just to watch her intros. @@LaurenBateman I've seen Heart beginning in 1982 until a few years ago. Nancy has only gotten better, even Ann still holds her own, she can't hit a few notes and gets winded sometimes, but she's learned to compensate by changing the way she sings a few verses and is still an epic vocalist.

Regarding “Level 3”... When I got started around 2004, I learned from a video that was sort of a bluegrass/country gospel style, and this video taught its first G chord with a ring finger on the low E at 3rd fret, middle finger on the A at 2nd fret, and pinky on the high E at 3rd fret. Same result as your level 3 obviously, but I’ve found that it makes an easier transition to the basic C chord, especially for beginners.

Here's another option for short fingers: Starting with the 4-finger version, lift your index off the A string and mute it with the underside of your middle finger. The difference (to my ear) between the full 4-finger and the muted A string is nearly imperceptible, especially in the middle of a song.

And then there’s the “klutz” version, which lazy old men like me use. I play the G chord with my thumb on the 3rd fret of the top E string, allowing the thumb to mute the A string while it plays the E string. My ring finger goes on the 3rd fret of the bottom E string. It makes the switch to the D chord lightning fast, as the ring finger simply rocks up onto the B string while the index and middle fingers settle in one fret behind it on the G and E strings. The switch to the C chord is tough, but it works for me as I avoid the C chord as much as possible anyway...🤪

Hi Lauren, I don't know if you have done this one before but could you do a tutorial on Brand new Key by Melanie? That would be great,. I'm sure a lot of your fan's would love that. Anyone with me?

Great suggestion Allan! I get lots of song requests so I cannot guarantee that I will get to it, but I will definitely add it to my list.

I'm thinking of quitting Lauren because of the G chord. I can play every chord without any problems. But I just can't get to grips (pardon the pun) with the G chord. It doesn't help that my fingers aren't the biggest. It's so frustrating. I haven't got a problem with the G6 shortcut. I just can't get a clean strum when my third finger has to drop down and hold the high E string 😞 0:03

Andy, don't give up. It can take months for chords to come around. Have you tried using your pinky VS your third finger. Some people find that more comfortable.

@@LaurenBateman I'm thinking about trying that Lauren. It's so frustrating nailing every chord, but the G chord is the one that's holding me back. I don't want to give up. I suppose I just need to persevere. Thanks for replying. Kind regards - Andrew.

Never heard it called a "Django G chord" before, but I have heard that same one called a "Nashville G chord."
