Hi Lauren, I'm an 84 year old guy who is determined to learn guitar, at least enough to strum a few chords to popular songs. Your teaching method and close ups make it the most effective teaching technique I have found on line and in person lessons. I wish you were in South Florida. My biggest problem so far is muting strings due to the heel of my hand touching the strings and I'm finding it difficult to overcome no matter where I move my thumb. Any suggestions? BTW, the icing on the cake is that you're also the prettiest guitar instructor I have ever seen.
@LaurenBateman2 жыл бұрын
Larry, hello! I actually just landed in Miami today for a conference. That's a very common problem you have and unfortunately, there are many possible reasons for this. Most likely it is your wrist placement. I will try to explain this as best as possible. What I want you to do is to drop your fretting hand down to the side and then bring it up to your guitar around the neck. This is the most natural position for you to hold your guitar. You also want to make sure that the body of your guitar is straight up and down not lying at an angle on your stomach.
@larrygoodson71822 жыл бұрын
@@LaurenBateman Lauren, Thanks so much for your reply. Wish I knew you were in Miami or I would have driven down from Delray just to say hello in person. In any case, I'm concentrating on keeping the guitar angled neck up and even bought a wide strap that helps me do that while standing and even sitting, but I guess it just needs more concentration and practice time. This is not going t o be an easy task but I know it's worth it if i can stay the course.

I think out of the three videos I've seen today from you Lauren, this one was the most helpful. Two things stand out to me. First, you showed an Easy D, which I was looking for to play. The second was how you mentioned the transition between Easy G and Easy D, which I didn't know before. The sequence of chords G Em C Em also is helpful so I can get used to playing. I have in my head now about how to get better playing Amazing Grace, which I hear is a great song to play at the beginner's level. I wrote down on paper the chords so that I can begin to memorize them. This video is really, really good, so thanks for the time and effort you put into it.

Many of my kin folk played some type of stringed instrument. My grand dad, my uncles and even an aunt played the guitar the violin, or fittle they called it. Banjo and mandolin. One of my uncles could play a 12 string guitar proficiently. The harmonica was played by my grand dad and a couple uncles. Being from west Virginia music was a common thing for many families in that state. Blue grass and country. And even rock is a part of WV life style. I tried to learn guitar on my own and never learned any cords at all but doing my own thing sounded pretty good to me and others. After all music is in my blood. But after listening to constant badgering that I played the same things to much I finally gave in to pressure and stopped learning the guitar. I'm 62 now and have the itch once again. And with no one around to badger me, it's on. Glad I came across this channel. I'm learning real cords now. Thank you.

Lauren, you teach so well, and speak so clearly! I am a fellow VRA member, and guitar player. My channel on songwriting is coming, but I started with Deeper With God, first. Good job getting to 100,000 subs! You’re an inspiration! James Ponak

I travel for work. My main instrument is the Tuba. (Kinda hard to travel with). I know brass, nothing about strings. I just picked up a guitar because I miss playing and have always wanted to learn. I find the way you teach to be both encouraging and insightful for beginners. Thank you for the videos. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Thank you, Lauren! I"m 76 and just started lesons again after nearly 20 years off and I love my teacher. But your presentation of the easy chords, and the explanation of the pivoting has been so helpful! I also have started your finger exercises. I'm going to go to your website to see if there's something I can purchase to put my money where my mouth is! Thank you and blessings!

I am learning the chords well from the video. I will note that it helps me to stand closer to the frets and angle the body of the guitar away from me, so my hand doesn't touch the bottom string. Most people probably do that naturally, but I just figured it out from frustration.

As a two-month beginner, I'm down at frets 8-11, just barely able to keep my fingers in those frets. My pinkie can go down and almost reach all the way up (I can't reach without turning out my wrist in the way you said not to do), though it stays flat on the strings and curls sideways, with the nail facing away from the other fingers. My index finger also stays flat on the strings. I assume this is normal and as flexbility increases, they will start behaving.
@LaurenBateman Жыл бұрын
Totally normal. Just have to work on building dexterity and flexibility.

To all beginners, Lauren should be your go to!!!!Lauren, all I have to say is thank you for being so amazing! I told my husband that I wanted to learn how to play guitar and he surprised me with an early Christmas present a week ago. I went into this not knowing anything and watching a few videos before finding you. Those videos are nothing in comparison to your teaching. I started with the video of becoming familiar with strumming and moving your fret fingers. Now I am learning chords! 💗

Dear Mrs. Bateman few minutes ago when I was practicing this lesson I got up for few minutes but when I came back I would not fine my pick so stated looking for something to replace my pick until I Found it so I found a quarter. To me it sound lots better than a pick,waw,it sound pretty .It sound prophetional just like your guitar. What do you think about stumming with a quarter.
@LaurenBateman3 жыл бұрын
Probably wouldn't recommend that but picks are made out of various materials. You can even get picks made out of stone.

@Diana Santiago. You may already know this. Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top plays his guitar using a Mexican peso coin. And Brian May of Queen plays his guitar using a small pre-decimal British coin known as a "sixpence" from the days when there were 240 pence/pennies to £1 Sterling. Maybe these guys use the milled/finely ribbed edge of the coin against the guitar strings to get their "sound".

of course, as a beginning guitar player, there is buzz when practicing! the pads of each finger is the problem. Is it just time and technique, or are there other remedies, like adjustments to my strings, or fingertip add on?
@LaurenBateman3 жыл бұрын
There could be other issues, but if you are just starting calluses could be a big part of the problem. Finger angle is also important.

Thank you for making these videos! I'm 70, soon to be 71 (14 days... eek! Lol) and refreshing my guitar 'skills'. Have never been an advanced player, or very good, just self taught, but adequate to go with my singing attempts... 😊. This time around, almost six years post stroke, the C chord has been giving me more trouble. I know I can handle the C you show, here! I'm so excited, words can't really express it! I play and sing, because I love guitar and love to sing, so only for my own pleasure and for a very small select number of friends. This will help immensely!
