I am Jewish my wife is Irish. My mother in law is a well known Irish Actress who resurrected a Martin Sherman play ""Rose"" the story of a Holocaust survivor. She toured single handed with this play for 10 years all over Ireland the UK South Africa and Australia. This was no mean feat for a Lady in her 70''s. She discovered that Maureen Lipman was going to p lay this role and thought it would be nice to send her her notes and wish her best wishes with her performance. She did not even have the courtesy to write back and thank her. After hearing this I hope that the fact that she was not Jewish was not a factor. She played to many Jewish audiences in small theatres and all her feed back was one of delight and thanks for such a sensitive portrayal of the character.

Ingrid Bergman played Golda Meir in the film "A woman called Golda" that was in 1982, I can't remember anyone making a fuss then. Yes, acting is acting, you don't have to have been a priest to play a priest, an-ex doctor to play a doctor, etc... etc.. However, where I do draw the line is not respecting the ethnicity of a historical character, and would find it extremely indelicate for a white actor to play the role of Nelson Mandela or Martin Luther King. And why I did not buy into a fictional mini series about Anne Boleyn being played by a black actress. I know that Laurence Olivier played Othello way back in the 60s and he blackened his face because in Shakespeare's play Othello, Othello is a military commander of Moorish race, therefore not white-skinned. So what would be the point of Othello being played by a white actor who does nothing to change his physical appearance? Today, there are so many excellent Black actors out there who would do a fantastic Othello, and at least their skin colour would be right.

Didn't hear people moaning when Rottweiler Stewart from the US played the role of an English princess in Spencer, nor did I hear people moaning when GaGa played an Italian in Gucci and just because they have an Italian sounding name doesn't make them Italian ffs what is it, one rule for them another for others ffs

I watched the UK version of Les Miserables which had a WHOLE BUNCH of non white people in it. Very inaccurate because of the time period. There were extremely few people of colour in France during that period but I didn't hear any complaints from the Wokerati about that.

They also use black actors playing some of the Founding Fathers in 'Hamilton'. I'm pretty sure not one of the Founding Fathers was black.

Might be tricky having real 'Nazis' act in remake of classic war movies.

Laurence I agree why don’t they focused on changing their own behaviour and character instead of nit picking on stupid nonsense.

There is a current dogma that all art must be autobiographical, which is self indulgent nonsense. People go to see stage plays and films for escapism, not reality. Hence the phenominal success of the Harry Potter books and films. Do people like Lipman truly believe that as no one (as far as we know) has played quidditch on a flying broomstick, that those scenes shouldn't have been shown? It's as though they want to shut down art altogether and deny people the right to use their imagination. It's modern puritanism.

Perhaps Maureen thinks that only Danish actors should play Hamlet.
