Thank you for your reaction! But that color-coded I Miss You video isn't accurate. Some of the verses aren't correctly credited to the right girls. When you want to watch a live version of this, please check their Queendom performance. It was also more recent than this recording so you can really hear how their vocals have matured. :)

9:15 "I was so confused about how they didn't like immediately pop off" well thats EXACTLY what i think when first discovering mamamoo too 😂. But yeah maybe some people prefer visual over talent (don't get me wrong mamamoo is pretty too, but you know what i mean... pretty much all the popular boy/girlgroup has the best visual in the industry). And also they're the first artist from a very small company, which is also a contributing factor why they didnt immediately gain popularity

I really enjoy your reactions your very smart about everything. When you bring up the MVs of their older songs, in order to get the version with English subtitles you have to search within the Mamamoo channel. A normal google search will bring up the Stone Music version, which does not have subtitles. The credits that keep coming up in Mr Ambiguous are there because their CEO pulled in favors to have various names associated with the video so it would get more attention. In the Decalcomanie the slow middle section is actually another song from the album Memory, which has it's own video. While it is the same actor it's not intended to be one guy getting together with them sequentially. It's intended to be part of the mirroring that comes from the title. 4 parallel experiences. Decalcomanie is my favorite song of theirs. Windflower is my favorite video. In addition to the other things it's doing it is an homage to a famous noir director. The MV is shot in Hong Kong and a lot of the color palette and locations are drawn from his films. The taxi scene is a shot for shot recreation of a scene from a lesbian film he did.

Please read this with the kindest voice you can imagine because I'm not trying to make you feel bad or anything. I agree with you about most of what you said but I'm going to start begging Moomoos to stop saying that it was a lesbian movie. The movie you're probably referring is called Happy Together and it has two male protagonists. This scene is a recurring thing in his movies and he also did it with a straight couple. I'm not trying to scold you or anything but a lot of people believe that and, no. Not everything about MMM is for the female lesbian fan base (which includes me). There's room for everybody guys!

Killing Voice will kill you but Immortal Songs Medley will murder you. Take your time on reacting with there 200+ songs, their discography is hugeee. But to tell you, they are better live than the studio version which is rare in kpop in general.

You're so right about MMM establishing a trademark style while never standing still and continuing to evolve and explore different styles and genres throughout their career. Mr Ambiguous: Baek Z Young giving them feedback is the Korean equivalent of having someone like Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey show up to help you with your debut. I think you'd be grateful even if the criticism was harsh, which is why the prank worked so well. Who does this kind of thing in an MV, esp for their debut? I Miss You is much more of a throwback to 60's -70's soul/r&b. MNET doesn't block reactions to Queendom. I Miss You on Queendom is on par with their 14 spectacular appearances on the singing competition tv show Immortal Songs, which are some of the best vocal performances by girl group you'll ever hear. In Decalcomanie I think the Lady Gaga vibe is partly because this is one of the few MMM songs mixed by a western sound engineer, Grammy winner Tony Maserati. In each of the four title tracks in the 4 Season 4 Color series they explore a different stage of love matching the season & color. Wind Flower captures the bluesy fall melancholy of a breakup. Wind Flower wasn't a big hit but it's one of Mamamoo's and moomoos' favorite songs. Blue;S is a masterpiece imo and is my favorite Mamamoo EP. 😂

Wind flower is my fave Mamamoo song ❤️ The wind flower is a flower that symbolizes the arrival of spring breezes and the loss of a loved one. The song is about moving on. The girls also show that different people deal with these heart aches differently. I love that it isn’t the usual sad “I blame you” breakup song.

One detail worth explaining, "Ememoho" and "Mamamoo" play off of not only each other in sounding very alike, but also with a word for moustache or facial hair, hence the moustache props and gesture that survives to this day as part of their greeting. The members LOVE wordplay!

"Decalcomanie", as someone else said, was kind of their breakout hit... though it didn't actually do so well at first (the adlibs from their golden dragon award performance made people start checking it out more and more) As for 'decalcomania', that art form is where english gets the word 'decal' from. Also, a second form of the art style is basically smashing ink between two sheets of paper and calling the result art .. this is referenced in the fruit being smashed in the mv, which is also pretty much 'awakening' or orgasm symbolism, depending on how far you want it to go The term decalcomanie is used decently often in south korea for the concept that lovers start to resemble each othet over time, both looking and acting like each other. Referenced in the mv with the mirror dances, solar + wheein or moonbyul + hwasa dancing in a fake mirror or the members mirroring each other together onstage There is a concept in south korea about a woman blossoming after a first kiss (a pg version, or little sibling to, the more widespread idea of that happening after losing virginity). That is major theme of the mv, with the four main characters deciding they wanted to experience this There are two competing fan theories on the guy in the mv, but both amount to 'the guy himself isn't all that important, just what he can do for them'. One theory is thwt he isn't meant to be the same guy each time, but they only hired one actor. The other theory (that i subscribe to) is that the women found a guy they considered easy prey and made him think he was hunting them down. Either way, once the women got what they wanted, he kinda vanished, not being needed anymore As someone else pointed out, the actor was actually gay. Their ceo, kdh, picked him specifically because of that, thinking they'd be more comfortable shooting the kissing scenes knowing he wasn't interested in them in the slightest. The members were still pretty shy around him, esp wheein... who made fun of herself for it in the behind the scenss for the mv shoot on mamamoo tv (mmmtv) As a bit of an aside, this mv was the first one shot by zany brothers, or zany bros, a well known company that specializes in filming kpop music videos. They've worked with a lot of artists and their two ceos got along really well with rbw's ceos (at least kdh) and have done practically every mv for rbw artists since, big exceptions being from mamamoo's solo work, esp wheein and hwasa

Hi Lauren, So much to cover here. To answer one of your last questions, my favorite Mamamoo song is always the last song i had heard from them. I'm usually humming it for a while afterwards. Mr Ambiguous, their Debut. They were a small company, their first live stage only had 3 fans. It was a poor company, so promotions and the backing were not there. They did their own choreography, makeup, etc in the early days. They built up a big fanbase over time, and became the queens that they are now, but they always were queens, people just didn't know it at that time. You will see the finger-stash used in the MV many more times for mamamoo. I miss you is a great powerful ballad. They are able to really draw our the emotions of this song (and other songs). the Queendom performance had the lyrics changed as it was a fan chosen song, and they changed the rap lyrics to be about their fans. There is a really strong relationship between mamamoo and their fans. Even though they have their own solo careers, they still will refer to the moomoo's (their fandom name). Decalcomanie is filled with sugestive imagery. I really love how the MV is done. There was a lot of hate for the MV, because of the guy in it, and the original version of the MV was taken down and edited to appease the fans. The song in the middle is essentially a Christmassy song from the same album. The guy in the MV was gay, and they were very shy around him. There was no kissing, just great acting and camera angles :) Windflower MV is very special. They four women really displayed various ways to cope with a breakup, or react to a break up, but the song finishing with them all together to really recover is a great message. But there are more levels to this MV. The MV was shot in Hong Kong and many of the scenes were homages to a famous hong kong producer/director. It was very cleverly produced to incorporate this. Their clothing styles are amazing and they look great in anything they wear, including Pokemon costumes (subtle request for reaction to them singing pokemon songs) and dog costumes (another subtle request for 'Waggy' which is probably something you will want to put straight to patreon, but worth seeing. It will make you happy, and improve your day by about 135%)

just a little tip: all of the mvs on the official MAMAMOO channel have subs. sometimes they’re a little harder to find and the earlier ones have less views but its there. also, you mentioned wanting to see a mamamoo musical which is funny bcs was solar just starred in a musical (mata hari) earlier this yr and mamamoo had a series of concerts called the “moosical”

I think the main reason they didn’t “pop off” is mostly because they had to start from scratch. Most kpop groups debut under already established companies, but Mamamoo was the first group to debut for RBW. They had to make a name not just for themselves, but also for their company. And because they were the first, it meant their budgets for promoting their group were very limited. They had to perform on the streets and enter in competition shows like Immortal Songs to grow their fan base. (Btw, after Killing voice you HAVE to check out their immortal songs performances. If you think these vocals blew you away you aren’t ready for them live 🤣) I think what really helped them take off was their personalities. After their first few mini albums they started to gain confidence in what they wanted their image to be and became more comfortable with showing their quirkiness in their videos and stage performances. I feel like that genuineness is what people gravitated towards (aside from the mind blowing vocals of course.)

Decalomanie! Its one of my favorite songs. And I Miss You is nuts with Solar and Wheein just going off, that color coded video was off though . In 2014 girl groups had the cute thing so Mamamoo stood out with this retro R&B Jazz feel. Moonbyul wrote her rap and helped create the choreography. Back in the beginning the choreography was simple as to show off their vocals as Mamamoo is a VOCAL oriented group first and foremost. Windflower took me a few listens for it to grow on me. Mamamoo is known for adlibs when they perform lives. Their first concert was called Moosicle. I know they have live band performances “it’s live” and Queendom performances of there’s are top notch and they rightfully won. Solar- So La of the scale to reference her ability to sing high with so much power. And Solar also reflects on the Sun in Yongsun. First win- Inkgayo, 6/6/16- You’re the Best You’re the best, Decalcomanie, yes I am, Starry Night, egotistic, Gogobebe, HIP,Aya are the songs that had wins I believe. They have some silly concepts/mvs too- Um Oh Ah Yea, AZE GAG, Taller then you, Waggy, Sleep in the Car to name a few. Yes, Wind Flower is part of 4 colors/4 seasons. Wind Flower is on the fall album and it’s Solar’s album for her solo song “Hello” is in it. I would recommend listing to that too. Star - Moonbyul, Wind- Wheein, Flower- Hwasa, Sun- Solar. Yellow Flower- spring, Hwasa. There is a song called Star Wind Flower Sun on Yellow Flower. Along with Hwasa’s solo “ Be Calm”. Paint me from this album also has an MV. 2018 Red Moon- summer, Moonbyul. Egotistic, Her solo song “Selfish” ft Seulgi has an MV. Out of all the ppl in the mr. ambiguous vid Baek Ji Young was probably the person with the most room to speak, specially to them since she was a nationally famous singer for like 20 years. I see a lot of ppl criticize the prank, but to me it just felt like an initiation. Like, the sunbaes teasing the new singer on the block. And then later she compliments them, it might've turned out to be a nice memory for them.

"Wind flower" is indeed the third title track for their '4 seasons, 4 colors" project. The 'blue;s' album was the one for the season of autumn, which is often associated with longing and regret for things done or not done in the warmer, brighter periods of life, as you start heading into winter. Those elements came out full force in the sing and video. And then the girls came together to help each other get over their regrets and celebrate such One korean reactor pretty much said it best with just one simple sentence: "how can a song be sad and joyful at the same time?" On top of that, the mv itself, which was filmed in hong kong, is pretty much a love letter to wong kar wei, a hk director famous for his films set in the '90s gangster noir setting that became a huge part of hk cinema. Every location, every scene, many of the outfits, referenced at least one of his movies, if not more. There is a short article pointing a lot of these out on an online art magazine One of the easiest to recognize is the scene of solar putting her head on moonbyul's shoulder in the taxi is exactly a scene from his gay romance 'happy together', with a still feom the scene used as the movie's poster The director went so far as to use the same types of cameras, the same filming styke, the same editing and coloring he used throughout his films

As others have pointed out, mnet doesn't actually block/strike reactions to queendom stages, which is actually pretty surprising. Most still put their full episode reactions up on patreon, though "I miss you" has been performed live several times and it's interesting to compare the earlier lives with the queendom one, both to see the lyrical differences (queendom's was changed to be about missing fans, not a lover) and to hear how their already incredible vocals had improved over the course of a few years

Oh, you absolutely nailed the meaning for "mr ambiguous" before getting to the lyrics. As for a channel, i used to suggest mamamoo archive but that one has sadly vanished, so the olivia whitr channel is the current best option i'm aware of (not to be confused with the olivia white dancer channel) The various crew being named in "mr ambiguous" are actually well known artists from the time they debuted, though several wound up being... problematic... Mamamoo and their agency basically started at the same time, so both were trying to make a name for themselves. The music ceo, kim dohoon or kdh, (rbw has 2 ceos) is a well known songwriter, composer and producer so called in favors to get famous people he'd worked with previously into the debut mv (several also did predebut songs with them. "Peppermint chocolate" and "don't be happy") As for the prank... it wss very unexpected but wound up suiting the girls and their agency a lot (despite thr fact many western fans, esp on the younger side, hate it). South korea seems to have a huge prank culture built around seemingly mean spirited pranks... I think this is sort of a pressure release valve for the ultra strict culture, as nobody seems to take the pranks seriously after finding out they're pranks, no matter how cruel they seem

Money, MAMAMOO came from a very small company, that is why their 1st years were basically live performances at shopping malls, parks & places like that, zero money, they were even in charge of choreography, clothes, make up, hair do, etc

Oh! And... the decal comment is already super long, so get another one with something i forgot to add... The song during the kissing scenes in "decalcomanie" is another song off the 'memory' album. The song itself is called "draw draw draw", though frequently also gets called "memory" and is very much a christmas song (and has it's own mv)

Most mamamoo videos have english subtitles especially the ones found on the official site or from publishers. Yes they were pranked in mr ambiguous and did cry because the actress/singer doing the prank is very well respected and known, so they believe it. Their vocals are stellar, because early on they were told because they are short and not Korean idol standard beautiful, they need to be perfect with vocals and performance, harsh considering how beautiful they are but they did become one of the best group of vocalists ever. I Miss You has a couple of Live performances besides queeendom, decalcomanie live is also great, queendom and others. And Mamamoo live is extreme, besides the extreme performances their vocals are so good live, it is better than the recordings and they can carry those vocals for their entire 3 and 4 hour long concerts. I suggest the 4 seasons 4 colors concert, it is 4 hours of mamamoo, solo stages or the WAW online concert from 2021. And Solar was in a musical, Mata Hari and we are all hoping for some sort of release of the performance. None yet except fan cams.

There's only a few pieces of music that hit me hard. All of them when particular artists perform them. And with hitting hard I mean tears welling up no matter when I hear it. The top 3 in no particular order : "Ave Maria" as used in the Fantasia movie, see : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqW7k5x7d8iaiM0 "Nessun Dorma" by the late Pavarotti, see : kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqbUgaGPas2EetU "I miss you" by these wonderful ladies. This early version was great..... but compared to later (live) versions... you haven't heard anything yet. And the reason for each song is the emotion that comes thru in the performance that transcends the actual lyrics and is just the combination of the composition and the artists talent and skill that makes me, this white straight 50+ male, grab for tissues each and every time. Mamamoo isn't a kpop girlgroup. They are a band of Korean women artists with a team behind them that musically know what they are doing.

"Mr Ambiguous": They did mess with them it was real... Everyone in the video are people RBW's CEO knew... He called in favours to have them in the video Love the earlier Jazz/R&B songs. FYI(you probably know this by now LoL) ON The official Mamamoo page this M/V has CC. as do most of the M/V's. The Prank played on them... their Faces are priceless. What makes it so funny is that Baek Jiyoung IS a well know Singer and Actress in South Korea, and the members didn't reconize her. In fact “Mr. Ambiguous” features some of K-Pop’s hottest stars, including Wheesung, K.Will, Rhymer, Bumkey, Jung Joon Young, and CNBLUE’s Lee Jong Hyun.

Good video! I enjoy your commentary a lot. But actually I disagree a lot with what you said at the beginning of the MV of Mr. Ambiguous. I think that it's in simpler songs and lines that a person's vocal shine. Solar's vocals at the beginning of the song are sultry and perfect. Of course hearing then hit a high note is very satisfying (especially if you have no real knowledge on vocals like me) but there's a lot more to it than that, Mamamoo gives their songs substance, their voices are deep, have depth and layer to them. Personally, that's what I appreciate about them.

This was cute, as pranks go; they only held it up for a bit, it wasn't too horrid, and they lovingly reassured the girls with great compliments from one of their role models. There were some really cruel pranks in Kpop though. AleXa got pranked twice in a very similar way; the first time, they told her she should pack her bags and go back to America because this idol thing wasn't working. She broke down crying, and it seemed like forever before they finally told her that it wasn't a dismissal notice, but a debut notice; she was also a very good sport about it, but... that was rough to watch. Or the infamous Neon Punch "prank", where a couple of months after debut the CEO told them they weren't good enough so he's disbanding the group and putting them back into training; it was absolutely heartbreaking and I don't want to see it ever again. And then there's other, even more horrible pranks, if you can believe it.

Mamamoo was my kpop first love, but Dreamcatcher is who I married. Those were all big music celebrities making cameos as staff for the m/v. The woman that pranked them is at the top top level of music industry superiors to them who are at the very bottom during their debut which is why they were silently breaking apart during the prank. Notice though, Wheein started laughing two beats before the other members because she's the Brain and the Joker of her group. Decalcomanie is the song where Mamamoo broke out and made their careers, but it's also one of their most difficult to sing so it barely gets covered, and might get changed around to be easier.
