So Buffy’s my favorite show and Buffy’s the kind of show that is a journey and has a lot of contextual stuff in it so it can come off cringey if you’re dropped in with no context. There’s another “metaphorical coming out “ scene in season 2 of Buffy where Buffy “comes out” as slayer to her mom and it’s very much treated as a coming out scene and she gets told that if she leaves not to come home. it’s a really rough brutal scene but it hits in the feels every time.

You two are quite charismatic and well-spoken! I found this video via the Buffy content, and aim a wee bit sad you weren’t impressed by the scene. But you explained your reasoning well, so I understand where you’re coming from. I think coming from a conservative background and being older, I actually find it the most realistic out of the bunch. That initial shock, and over compensating of “that’s fine, that’s fine” and realizing “why am I acting weird, this is my dear friend” and making that sincere connection is all done within seconds. So I actually love Buffy’s acting.
@micron000 Жыл бұрын
I think that Willow's coming out in Buffy has to be taken in context. At the time, there were practically no main wlw characters in network dramas. Most wlw storylines we did get, were done for ratings - they were the most blatant queerbaiting, highly pushed in marketing as "groundbreaking", and garnered hype for the show through controversy. Even within the shows narrative, it was always seen as experimentation. Once the storyline was over, one part of the pair would usually leave the show, and the other would go on to only have straight relationships, their sexuality never to be mentioned again. With the (very very) few characters that did stay LGBTQ+, they would usually have a way over-the-top, dramatic storyline, such as outing, being kicked out, bullied or gay bashed etc... And even then, after the storyline would be resolved, their sexuality would usually take a back seat, and they would mostly stay single. This was obviously due to public opinions at the time, but also had a lot to do with censorship rules with 90s network TV. Buffy being a show mainly aimed at teens, which decided to not only make one of the main and most beloved characters queer, but also chose to keep her as such long term - was in itself, groundbreaking. The fact that it was handled with so much care, is really clear if you look at other coming out storylines we had at the time... Willow being pretty casual about it, choosing to tell Buffy of her own accord, without expecting it to be a huge dramatic moment, was already unheard of. And yeah, Buffy freaked a little, but again we have to remember the times... It was such a short moment, and then she was honestly pretty great. I also feel like the context of the whole episode matters here. The show made a very important commentary on the trend I tried describing above. Basically, Willow's long-term bf Oz, which she dated through high-school, had to breakup with her cause he went on a journey to find a cure for being a werewolf. At the start of S04 (their first year at collage), he was gone and Willow met Tara. The two became close and then in this episode, Oz comes back, having found a cure. Watching this episode air as a pre-teen, my heart automatically sank since going by what would usually happen in other shows, I expected Willow and Tara to turn out as just another queerbaiting storyline, which would now be forgotten since Oz came back. However, what ends up happening in the episode, is that Willow actually chooses Tara over him. That is literally something never before seen on TV up to that point - she had a chance to "be normal", to go back to a boy that she did love, who treated her well and truly loved her back - But she still chose Tara over him. If you weren't around in the 90s, you might not realize how unbelievable that was to watch, but trust me, it was! If you also take into account that after said episode, Willow and Tara stayed together for over 2 seasons, and even though Tara's exit was handled somewhat unfortunately (they killed her off basically), Willow went on to have another relationship with a woman in the following season - meaning, the show never went back on her coming out. They kept her queer which was great. The show also featured the first ever wlw kiss on network TV, with Willow and Tara, which again, was handled amazingly. It was purposely left out of trailers and promotion for the episode, as to not fall into said queerbaiting "trend". They put their first on-screen kiss into a dramatic episode that had nothing to do with the couple, and showed it as a totally normal part of life. In that episode they are all grieving the sudden loss of Buffy's mom, and the kiss was meant as a moment of comfort; Tara trying to calm Willow down after she breaks down crying. This was a full season after they've been together with no on-screen kisses, and so it was very clear that there was no element of queerbaiting or publicity stunts - Simply two queer women in an actual, loving, long-term relationship. As far as the acting goes, you're of course allowed not to like it, but yeah - it was pretty normal for network TV of the time, and in fact, I personally think Alyson (Willow) did an amazing job at conveying her internal conflict, without making it overly dramatic. I understand why it might be jarring when you're so used to the TV shows of 2020's, but again, as someone who watched it at the time, it was seriously incredible and paved the way for a lot of other wlw couples and characters in the early 2000s and beyond.

Leighton’s coming out scene always gets me. It’s probably the raw emotion and how you can relate to that fear. I can relate, fully. When I found out I was a Lesbian I never said I was for a while, because I was scared to and was scared about how others would feel. But then I realized that I didn’t have to tell anyone who I didn’t want to, and then it just got easier, I think. It’s still scary sometimes, but now I can say it fully and with certainty that I am, in fact, a Lesbian and it won’t change whether I choose to say it or not.

Honestly, the way you guys talked about Buffy was very correct (for someone looking back on it, all these years back). Because it was only a short clip of a longer set up. For a long running show, a progressive long running show, it was a hints here and there. I honestly want to say this was 2-3 episodes set up. Buffy’s reaction is very much of that time, freak out don’t talk about it and then just accept.

it's interesting to assume that awkward acting = bad acting, when the awkwardness is deliberate and the scene conveyed exactly what it was trying to convey: a character freaking out, being called on the fact that she's freaking out because she's acting weird and awkward, and denying it because she knows she shouldn't be weird about it. it's cool if some people's coming out experiences weren't awkward, but i think it's pretty normal for them to be. buffy's journey is a little like the dad in love, simon just without the toxic masculinity; both don't know how to react and make it weird initially, even though they're not actually homophobic, and then later they process better and are able to better support their loved ones.

I identify as asexual, and I kinda view the metaphor in the last scene a bit differently. It’s true that a feast has the connotation of being appealing, whereas she doesn’t want to have sex with anyone. But I imagine that she perceives sex as something she should want, and before this scene, she doesn’t realize that it’s okay not to want it. Therefore, there are a bunch of “appealing” options, but she doesn’t want any of them. I don’t know that she is saying that she sees others as objectively attractive, so much as she sees others who, based on those around her and what she’s seen growing up, she should be attracted to. I dunno, that’s just my two cents. Hopefully all that makes sense lol.

We love Buffy the vampire slayer, so glad u did it, one of the most progressive shows of that time period. Also willow and tara weren't even the fist LGBTQ+ characters in the show, there was a guy named Larry🖤🖤🏳🌈

This video was amazing. I just wanted to let you know that Darren from Heartbreak High uses they/them pronouns as they are non-binary :)

Buffy mitigating circumstances: 1. The style of Buffy was half comedy, and Joss Whedon is famous for juxtaposing emotionally weighty moments with goofiness. The audience is supposed to take a break from the tension laughing at Buffy before the scene turns serious again. 2. Buffy's character arc at that point had to do with starting college and feeling like everything was changing. She felt overwhelmed like she couldn't keep up. This was another change, which is why she's freaking out. It shocked her because: 3. Willow had been super in love with her boyfriend Oz. He had left to find a cure for being a werewolf, so he could be with Willow safely. Buffy was expecting Willow to be excited that he was back just a few months later, supposedly cured. She didn't know that Willow was falling for their new friend Tara.

Loved this video as always! There are some scenes in call the midwife with a character called Patsy who is with a woman called Delia, it's set in the 1960s and is really good!

If you do anymore videos like this you should do the insatiable (Bob and Bob or Bonnie coming out to Patty) and teenage bounty hunters (sterling coming out to Blair) Oh and I really love the rating system you had on the first reacting to coming out scenes video where one of the ratings was directed by a straight man😂

I’d love if you two would make a video about aroace. This identity needs more representation

it makes a big difference seeing all this pride-friendly stuff on here. the community didn't have this 20 yrs ago, it was easy to feel alone asp for ppl who weren't out. all the love ☺️❤️

My favorite coming out story to this day is still Santana Lopez from glee, it was heartbreaking and rewatching even more, because of the actress' passing. Please react to that one, if you haven't yet. Aside from that my favorites are Simon from love, Simon and Zoë Rivas from degrassi next class.

Wow that one where the guy comes out as asexual is really good. Too bad I don’t have Netflix because honestly I really loved that scene you played.
