On November 16th, 2015, Laurie Anderson joined us on the lecture couch in Paris the wake of the devastating attacks in the city the previous weekend. She felt it was an important moment to talk about how art and artists respond to tragedy. In this talk, she outlined the circumstances behind her 2015 Park Avenue Armory work, Habeas Corpus, and how its themes relate to what took place in Paris on November 13, 2015.
TOPICS:
00:10 - Habeus Corpus
13:27 - Meeting Mohammed
37:00 - Language
40:57 - Hospital sounds
45:56 - Ice skating
53:17 - Empathy
Back in the ’70s, Anderson had a lot of fun playing with people’s perceptions of what a music piece could be, and by throwing together surreal performance, spoken word tone poems, and abstract synth grooves, she even turned the pop world upside down. Originally a sculptor before she started crafting her unique soundscapes, her calm, syncopated delivery conjures all manner of tripped-out dream imagery - evocative and vague enough to qualify as fully-blown artistic statements.
Anderson reached a mainstream audience with her single “O Superman,” which led to a string of exotic albums and multi-media experiments, including *Big Science*, *Mr Heartbreak*, and *Home of the Brave*. Widely influential for her use of early samplers and invented electronic instruments, Anderson has collaborated with Brian Eno, Andy Kaufman and late husband Lou Reed - dancing her own path through art and music with a sense of wonder for life and nature.

30 years ago She performed in my country, a local newspaper invited Her for an interview, and i was blessed with an invitation. it was much like this one, a Golden Well throwing enchanting stories into the air, and that is She, who shines like one of those huge diamonds, national treasures, the most beautiful Women I've ever met. the past years weren't easy for us, losses, and 2020 even more challenging. I sincerely hope She is ok.

Her positive humor seems better than most of my therapy sessions. I was keeping up with Laurie in the 80's and saw her 3 times. I am glad she took this project on.

The thing I like about Laurie Anderson is that even her political work isn’t political at all. It’s true art in the universal sense. Laurie’s a good communicator, and she has zero contempt for her audience. When you’re experiencing her work, you feel first and foremost that you’re in the hands of a wise village elder. More women would benefit by immersing in her work. She’s a genuine artist in postmodernist’s clothing.

I think the perception of her art as political or not depends on the viewer/experiencer of her work. Some people see everything in political terms these days and "political" has become a trigger word, a bad word, a word that divides people into right and wrong, good and bad. Her work definitely is not rooted in that kind of understanding of political, though I think she responds to this conception of political with art that offers a much more expansive and offering.. "Political" is rather difficult to define. Sure it can have to do with government and institutions, but it also reflects how people relate to one another. I don't like that it has become a bad word -- I think that is a sign that some people are rejecting a reality that is true. If you look at artists , creators-- we do not value them as a society. We cut arts programs, we don't pay artists well, if at all. I think this is a sign that artists and their creations actually are the true gem of a highest form, and the egoic social body reists art/artist because they not only reflect our reality, back to us, the reflections themselves threaten the illusion of reality by exposing it. I am not sure how to explain. I love Laurie Anderson's work. I appreciate it at a very deep level. I love so manhy things about her performance art--she is brilliant and in performance I experience her in luminious form. I especially love and appreciate the compassion with which she weaves her art; the forms through which she offers her compassion to the world strike me as sublime. It is hard to explain.

@@thetarrahbear - Thank you for replying so thoughtfully. I agree. Reading your reply got me thinking about why our social/political discourse seems to have broken, and it comes down to impatience, lack of faith, and a deficit in understanding human nature. It’s a kind of frustration over expected instant gratification from being trained by new technologies to expect things that move slowly to move fast. It puts people against an imaginary wall of urgency which makes people more prone to lie and be violent. Roe v Wade is a good example, because many people were quick to believe the media’s lies that their ‘rights’ were being taken away - so then abolish the Constitution! Attack the Supreme Court! Stop having sex! Yadda yadda - when all that really happened was the Supreme Court put abortion law (not rights) back into the hands of the states where it belongs. Abortion is still perfectly legal in all of the states where protestors were the most misled about it by their Democrat officials and corporate media. In other words - nothing changed, but many people are too reflexively conditioned by technology to be able to slow down their egos and do a little bit of reading to realize that if they’re pro abortion the Supreme Court just gave them more personal power to ensure that their state provides abortions. Unfortunately, those who were quick to react are sacrificing their friendships, marriages, and peace of mind to the kinds of illusions that rush in where information requires a little bit more thought and time to come to light.

I really think the red bull did a crappy multimedia job, considering the budget they have. People with much less means do, every day, a much better job in supplying support to pass on a message or a performance. I can't believe they didn't have a giant silk screen instead of these little monitors and huge wall of nothing as a bull back drop. Makes one wonder...
