If they won a lawsuit and settled and part of the settlement was getting money but not the credits, then game over. We don't know what was the deal back then, but I remember hearing those rumors 20 years ago too. I just co-wrote a song for a major artist, I'm credited, but had to give up a lot of the author rights, it's a business move, sometimes, it's better to make 20% of 100 than 50% of 5. I had this situation in 2003 when 2 co-writers of a song said "We don't want rights, we just want a 1000€", but then the song became huge and it generated around 200k of author rights. Sometimes you gotta think for the longterm

Beyoncé’s dad suggested that ne-yo not be credited on the song as a writer because “it’ll look better if she were the only writer.” Her dad was B’s manager at that time. @Fattydeposit6 жыл бұрын
There was no reason for her to give her original solo group reason to sue her to hell. I remember it going down. I saw her live with the Fugees twice and held her in the highest regard - but that was a long time ago now. These days I'm a bigger fan of Glasper because he's a relentlessly active musician - and he has no reason to talk shit about Ms Hill. The sad thing is nothing of what he said about her seemed shocking or surprising because his credibility is rock solid. Nobody expected the Miseducation LP to be a Prince-like solo creative masterwork but she insisted on making it out like it was. It's a sad ass tale.

Let's not forget about what she did with The Fugees. Lauryn was already walking on water before her album even dropped. That 2nd Fugees album and her role in Sister Act II placed her in a category all her own. When Miseducation came out, that was just a continuation of what she had already done.. it was great.. it's still great and it will always be great. And her unplugged album is an underground classic to this day. Open Mics and Cafes all over the country were immediately inspired by what she did with just her voice and her guitar. Allot folk that liked Miseducation weren't really feeling the unplugged album but that doesn't take anything away from the greatness and the impact of that DVD set.

I’m definitely looking for something specific in musicians, and I absolutely do hire the best musicians I can find. Not every band had that particular ‘something’ I was looking for. That doesn’t make them bad musicians, just different than what I needed in that particular moment.” She does allow that she may not have been experienced with some traditions of collaborative songwriting. “’The Miseducation’ was the first time I worked with musicians outside of the Fugees [whose] report and working relationship was clear. In an effort to create the same level of comfort, I may not have established the necessary boundaries and may have been more inviting than I should have been,” So fuqqin get it right!!

I really appreciate that Joe and the guys are having this conversation, but we have to ask the question...How are we defining the role of producer in this scenario? Lauryn Hill definitely "Produced" the album "Miseducation.." She produced it in the same manner that Quincy Jones & Michael Jackson produced Thriller. You build your team, you recruit producers, session players, writers, singers, etc. that have the chops, energy, and "right" vibe to deliver in that moment the sound / vision you are seeking for your project. Anything created in the context of those sessions were written from the perspective of what they knew about her musically, lyrically and sonically. She was the point of reference for any ideas as she already had an established "brand", "sound", "approach", "vibe" to draw from. As the "Producer" of this Album, she had the responsibility to select, add, subtract, devise, revise, compose, coach, assign, make suggestions, etc. on the content, direction, sound, and "feel" that was being presented to her for this project. It was obviously a hands on project that she spearheaded and orchestrated. She had a clear direction and "feel" for where she wanted to go as you can tell from the end result which was "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill...". So yes she did "Produce" & "Write" the record WITH a great supporting team. The exact same formula that Quincy & Michael utilized. The only difference is that not all of the players, writers, producers, beat makers were properly credited on her project. As a songwriter, I am definitely an advocate for making sure writers/creators/collaborators are properly credited and that legally everyone is protected for the creative works and contributions that are made to a project, song, artist, etc. I just wish that all the proper credits would have been provided on this project, as it would have prevented this perceived "dark cloud" from hanging over the historical significance of this album. It is a bonafide classic. In the top echelon of classic albums. Definitely in the category of a "Songs In The Key of Life", "Thriller", or "Purple Rain" in terms of its creative value, sonic quality, social impact and pop culture relevance. She had an amazing resume prior to "Miseducation..." but when your first solo album literally redefines a generation of musicians and pop culture its hard to out-do that kind of contribution. Hopefully the individuals who did contribute to this album but were not properly credited and or compensated will find peace in knowing they were part of one of the most important works in popular music history, but leave room in their heart to allow to universe to "repay" them by allowing them to create more work, get more professional paying jobs, teach the next generation of artists/musicians the ropes on the music and BUSINESS side of the process. There are plenty of lessons to be learned on both sides but all in all, most of us are very grateful for that particular body of work and appreciate how it transformed us inside and demanded that our priorities change, or voices be heard and our truth be told. Peace and Blessings to all.

There is no telling what happened in those studio sessions but, I've seen live footage of Lauryn hill sing and playing instruments and the shit sounds beautiful enough to bring you to tears. She only has one SOLO album but it still holds up to this day. If we are gonna remove her from her pedestal, then we have completely Wipeout all new artists that are out today. Their live performances sound horrible, they can't play instruments, and all subject matter is the same. They just can't touch lauryn

Unplugged blows everything Lauryn Hill ever did for the culture into obscurity, nothingness! In my humble opinion, unplugged LAURYN exposed the condition of the human experience and is a testament of self realisation and conquering the ego. This project changed my attitude towards my inflated sense of self. It forced me to deal with my narcissism and made me recognize Collective consciousness. For that revelation I am internally grateful. # Spirit having a human experience.

Lauryn didn't lock herself in the studio and came out with that album. She had help from many writers, arrangers, and producers who created the work known as "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill". The work is classic but Lauryn is not in the same breath as Michael, Prince, Stevie, Marley, or Marvin.

She WAS amazing - but Mal is right. There are definitely two sides to the coin - but putting her on such a high pedestal is why she thought she could treat others like peasants. Like SHE said, she's isn't Rita Watson - maybe in real life she just isn't that likeable. No one really knows because she was elusive from the start. I definitely seperate her music from the person she is. Just don't know if she's that great. Her response was narcissistic rambles covered in me me me, trying to pass the blame and gaslighting. She never really denied the claims she said she was unaware. Meaning: He was talking truth.

It’s a sonic and visual talent “thing” when it comes to Lauryn Hill. Probably the best female hip hop artist ever. What female rapper (if ever) didn’t get rhymes written for them. If you take her off the pedestal, you have to do the same for Drake, Lil Wayne and all those 2000 - Infinity mainstream artists.

But the music DID sound vastly different moving forward, that's the thing and people will say it's blasphemy but I been to the shows where she's late and raspy and singing a funky version and none of it was fun. Add to that her insisting on being called Ms. like cmon! She cant tune her own guitar. You can't compare her to Quincy Jones. Like seriously?! Her credits said she did ALL of it. She had the Tyler Perry credits. Lauryn dodges criticism? Why? Cuz everything is everything? I want her to listen to her own music. The Marley D destroyed her. She was never the same. And her dreds were fake. Smh. I'm just so disappointed in that trajectory because I truly believed in those rhymes. She not even listening to her own words. 😭 As a woman and a fan of her former self, I feel betrayed.
