I really appreciate liked your take on the video when you said “times may change but people don’t.” I’ve read a lot and watched a lot of reactions to this song, and your take is by far the most interesting I’ve heard. I’m so glad I watched your reaction. Sending love to you from Scotland ❤

She wasn't really the first to mix classic soul with modern production but in late 90's she was part of the "neo soul" label along with Maxwell, D'Angelo The Roots and Erykah Badu. But you could look back to late 80s artists like Tony! Toni! Tone!, Terence Trent D'Arby, Sade, Soul II Soul, Jamiroquai and Lisa Stansfield for providing influence also.

***LAURYN HILL TRIVIA TIME!!!*** ....let's "doo" that THING....... (1:15) ... ....Oh, I'm gonna make some of you, reeeeeeeeeeeeal MAD.....but, I'm just the messenger.... Lauryn was an Actress / Singer, who gained popularity....and, INFAMY, with her "Showtime At The Apollo" AT-TIT-TUDE....along the R&B circuit; She got the part in Whoopi Goldberg's CLASSIC flick, "Sister Act", and then, the featured Singer, in the Neo Soul / Hip Hop Group, The Fugees..... - ...Their MASSIVE 1998 tune "Killing Me Softly" crossed over to the Pop charts, and established the Group...and, Lauryn....as THE ONES, to keep your eyes on....THEN, She got a Solo deal, and....ALLEGEDLY....created, produced, wrote, & played the entire 1998 Album, "The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill", and the 1st single, was "Doo Wop (That Thing)"......ba-booooom...... - ...ASTRONOMICAL SUCCESS!!! ...5 Grammy's, 21 MILLION copies, Best selling Album by a female rapper, Best selling "Neo Soul" Album, EVER, One of the foreshadowing Albums by a Female, showing Women...BLACK Women...can do BIG numbers....a CLASSIC success.....now, THE DRAMA..... - ...It was rumored Lauryn did NOT do any of the Music on the Album; a Production team sued Lauryn saying THEY did ALL the Music, and direction, and, Lauryn just... "got her makeup done..." ...Lauryn was supposed to give credit on the NEXT Album, BUT....after the suing, she severed ties with them.... - ....Then Lauryn went into depression, almost got arrested for not paying taxes, REFUSED to do any other Albums, and was FORCED to do a "unplugged" CD, to recoup the Taxes / payments owed, to Sony / Columbia.... - .... She has NEVER put out another Solo Album; I spoke to several of the Production team who sued her (in 2001 / 2002), and they played me demos that made it VERRRY clear...to me....THEY, were the 'real' Lauryn Hill.....

@@darnell49 ...NOT lyin' either; I worked for a Music licensing Company 1999-2003, and we did the licenses for "Everything Is Everything", So, when Lauryn got sued, we were "briefed", to make sure we got "our" cut.... So, I had to speak to the men that sued ( I compiled all the documents for agreement of percentages); they played me 8(!) demos to prove they did the work, and it was "Lauryn's sound", thru and THROUGH..... I KNEW she would never put out another Album, even in 2001!

Lauryn Hill was the very first black female rapper who went #1 solo in 1998. It was not until Cardi B went #1 in 2017 with “Bodak Yellow Money Moves” 19 years later as the second black female solo rapper. They both paved the way for Lizzo to go #1 with “Truth Hurts” in 2019 followed by Megan The Stallion with “Savage” and Doja Cat & Nicki Minaj with “Say So” in 2020.
