With regard to the California sign and "Entering Pacific Time" I can pretty much guarantee that sign is on the state's border with Arizona. Three states border California, and the other two, Oregon and Nevada, are also in Pacific time like California. Arizona is in the "Mountain Time Zone" and is thus one hour ahead of Nevada and the West Coast. So 8:00 a.m. in L.A. is 9:00 a.m. in Phoenix. The confusing thing about Arizona, however is that it does not observe Daylight Savings Time (the American equivalent of British Summer Time). So when we change our clocks in the spring to DST, Arizona then is technically on the same time as Pacific Daylight Time.

There are four time zones in the contiguous United States: Eastern Time (UTC -5), Central Time, Mountain Time, and Pacific Time (UTC -8). When you cross into another zone, the time changes by an hour. Time zones were created in the 19th century with the advent of the railroad so people didn't have to deal with town clocks being just a few minutes off from each other. Furthermore, I can't remember the name for Alaska's time zone, but it's UTC -9. Same for Hawaii, and I think it's UTC -10 or UTC -11 since it's way the hell out there in the Pacific.

The boundaries for time zones often coincide with state borders, with a few exceptions. Did anyone else notice on Illinois' sign 13:44 that the outline of the "river" down the middle of the state is actually the profile of Lincoln? Also, South Carolina's slogan 13:58 is very similar to South Dakota's slogan 11:54 ("faces" referring to Mount Rushmore). Regarding time zones, yes it is an instantaneous switch. The border of time zones are usually rivers or county lines. So, you could have 2 cities separated by a river that are in 2 diff time zones. For example, in SD, Pierre (the state capitol) is in the Central Time Zone, while west of the Missouri River, Fort Pierre is in the Mountain Time Zone. And the difference is only an hour. So, once you cross the bridge you are either an hour ahead or an hour behind where you just came from (depending on which direction you are traveling, east vs. west). Regarding license plates, you register your vehicle in the state in which you reside. You only have to switch plates if you move to a different state.

24:40 The license plate is from the state you have your car registered in. You do not have to change your plate between states (that would be super annoying; some people commute to work over state lines). It can be kind of cool to see how far people have traveled. License plate designs also change over time, so not all of them from the same state are the same. You are not required to get a new plate (you can keep the same plate # most of the time) unless the plate becomes unreadable...though most people get a new one when it gets rusty. The plates tend to have the state motto on them... but not always.

One problem with signs that announce who the governor is that they're usually out-of-date, & are announcing who the governor was 2-3 years ago. I mean, there usually isn't a rush to replace all the state welcome signs the day after an election.

15:38 its just a 1 hour difference. theres 4 timezones pacific, mountain, central, and eastern time. So 4:00 PM in Denver would be 5:00 pm in Chicago, 4:00 pm in LA would be 6:00 pm in St Louis and so forth. Theres plenty of timezone maps online if youd like to see where exactly these timezones start and end.

To answer your question. Yes, it’s an instant time change. When you are approaching the state line there are usually 3 signs within a hundred meters. An official small sign that marks where the boundary is that says “state line” Then there is another small sign listing the time zone you are entering, and finally the fancy sign that you reacted to in this video.

The “Virginia is for Lovers” slogan is there because the first ever American interracial couple got married in Virginia.
@trebcabb4 жыл бұрын
Lol, sorry, that's wrong. Virginia was one of the states that banned interracial marriage until the federal government knocked down every state law banning interracial marriage in the 1960s. The state where I live (IL) repealed its law against interracial marriage in 1874 and some northern states never had any law banning it at any point. If it's being said that the Loving case is what made interracial marriage possible everywhere in the U.S. that's simply not true.

Hey @LavLuka ! To answer your question, (time stamp @15:29 ) the time zones don't change by state border to state border - there is a specific time zone map, which can get confusing. You can get some weird cases- like in Florida! The most most mosttt NorthWest part of FL is in Central Time, while the rest of FL is Eastern TIme. Hope I could help :)
@you_can_call_me_T4 жыл бұрын
The continental U.S. sits within 4 different time zones: Pacific, Mountain, Central, and Eastern. (That's west to east.) When you cross westward into a new time zone, the time goes backward an hour. And the opposite happens when you go east. Usually your cell phone automatically makes the change for you.

16:00. The time zone change is pretty much instant, actually! I don't live near enough to the border between two time zones to be affected, but I'd imagine you just get used to it. Also, the time difference is only 1 hour. If your watch says "7:45 PM" on it in Nevada, when you cross into California you'd switch it back to 6:45 PM.

Time zones are instant. Once you cross the time zone line, the time immediately changes by one hour (there are a few weird exceptions to the rule). If driving west, you set your clock back one hour; drive east, you lose an hour. When I drive, my car and phone automatically change to the correct time zone time. The contiguous 48 states have four time zones: Pacific, Mountain, Central, and Eastern. When it's noon on the east coast, it's 9:00 a.m. on the west coast. This also answers the question about when you see TV shows advertised, the commercial might say the show starts at "8:00; 7:00 Central." That means the show starts at 8 pm in the Eastern time zone, but it's 7 pm at the time the show starts if you live in the Central time zone.

I live in Astoria, Oregon on the north coast. It’s Pacific Time, but when you travel west to east, the time changes forward one hour. The 48 contiguous states have 4 time zones. If you ever see a US tv ad for a tv show that says 8 \ 7 Central it’s because the show is at 8 for all time zones, except central time zone states.

15:28 This is entering California from the Arizona border side which is on Mountain Standard Time, so there is a +1 hour time difference. However, the majority of Arizona does not observe the Daylight Savings Time change which causes them to have the same time as California during for about 8 months of the year but they are still not part of our Time Zone. Also to note, because of some comment on here, Arizona is the only state to border California where the time would change. The other two states are already in the same time zone
