Georgia O’Keefe. Everyone should know that much about New Mexico. I had a great aunt with a cattle ranch there. She had a shelf in the kitchen with a row of quart-sized Mason jars full of rattlesnake rattles. Every time they killed one, they would cut off the rattles and keep them. I have wonderful memories of real Mexican food (made by real Mexicans), the Carlsbad Caverns and the surrounding desert, miles of pink sand under turquoise skies, pueblos, fresh-churned vanilla ice cream made by one of my uncles in the shade of a porch in the sweltering heat of the afternoon. I love New Mexico, especially Taos.

A few quick comments about Louisiana and the French: 1) As several other people mentioned, it used to be French territory. It was more than just the state itself though; the Louisiana Purchase was a HUGE swath of land that basically doubled the size of the United States at the time. Geographically it was most of the American 'midwest'. 2) It was sold to the United States in 1803 because Napoleon needed to pay for his war machine, i.e.- the 'Napoleonic Wars'. 3) There are also a large number of inhabitants in Louisiana that emigrated from Haiti, which was formerly a French colony/slave plantation (until 1804). They formed their own hybrid language and culture as they mixed with the European settlers and Native Americans. This is where Creole language and culture comes from, which is very regionally unique to Louisiana. Love the channel, btw! I'm learning a lot of new things myself. ;o)

Delaware: "The first state to become a state" simply means it was the first state to vote to ratify the U.S. Constitution after the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The Convention submitted the proposed Constitution to the 13 then-existing states for debate and ratification, and adoption of the Constitution required an affirmative vote of nine of the 13. Delaware was the first to vote yes. Eventually, all 13 voted to ratify the Constitution by 1788.

I know I'm several months late, but if you have Hulu, there's a series they have called Aerial America, and each episode goes over a different state as seen from the air, and it goes over the landmarks, land formations, history and charm of the states individually. It is absolutely amazing to see. I highly recommend it and I love the videos so far!

Huge homeless population in California's biggest cities, people living in filth on the streets in KA & San Fransisco, and huge state debt. I'd be so happy to give you book recommendations! (around 3:20) You seem to like sports, geography, and history. I think you might enjoy "Fever Pitch" by Nick Hornby. It's a memoir about an Arsenal fan's relationship with soccer. That's the most famous soccer/football book I know of. Breezy. Published in the early '90s. There's also a book called "Inverting the Pyramid" which is apparently very good. I haven't read it, but It's about football tactics (total football and things like this). If you plan to travel to the United States after COVID, you can get Lonely Planet's newest guide to the country. They usually come out with a new edition about once every year or few years. You will learn a lot of the basics of American history, geography, culture, and particularly travel advice. Their writers and researchers are excellent, and it's also good because you can turn to sections you're curious about and don't have to read it from front to back. Their books have been incredibly useful to me while travelling. As a classic, I would also recommend "Animal Farm" and "1984" by George Orwell. It will give you insights into some of the subjects you've reacted to in your videos, especially as it relates to communism and totalitarianism more broadly. Also, you seem like a really pleasant, curious person and I like your channel a lot. :) On another note related to the video, Delaware was the first colony to ratify the constitution of the United States. That's what he means by "the first state to become a state."

Michigan has a lot of geographic/ landscape diversity for one state. More than "urban blight," anyway. (Detroit has its own beauty.) Since many of our states are the size of medium sized European countries you could easily do a full video for each state. You might get sick of cows and corn, depending on the delivery and the order you watch, but the variety of landscapes across some states are incredibly diverse; you would never know you were in the same state.

Just an example of his West coast bias (not that its all negative, just less informed on some Eastern states). Its just a little shocking to hear "richest, highest educated black ppl" living in Baltimore, having worked in the school system and seeing the worst funded schools in the most poverty stricken areas. while Maryland has high population of wealthy African Americans, to say they have "the richest, highest education black ppl" leaves out the policy brutality that currently exists, and the institutionalized racism that has existed, including when Maryland was segregated. Because of all of this, Baltimore is one of the most dangerous, poverty stricken cities in this country. Other times, he summarizes a state by one city, like Michigan he describes just Detroit. I don't think he meant anything malicious by it, he just knows less about certain areas so keep that in mind.

Fun fact about Indiana: it's where the DCI World Championships take place. Also, being a Michigan resident, Detroit has been building back up, and there are some wonderful places in the upper portion of the Lower Peninsula, which is where Traverse City, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Mackinac Island are, and that's not all of it. Also, before I forget, we are surrounded by 4 of the largest freshwater lakes in the world, the deepest being Lake Superior at 1332 feet (or about 406 meters) below the surface.
@shell22503 жыл бұрын
I have to say that most of Michigan is actual quite rural and beautiful. We are definitely more than just Detroit or Flint. We are surrounded by the Great Lakes, and we have the most freshwater coastline in the US and more coastline than any other state except Alaska (more than California or Florida)! We also have more than 11,000 inland lakes (more than Minnesota)! Detroit definitely had a huge decline, but there has been a slow and steady resurgence since 2000 that is happening and Detroit is making a come back.
