A small percentage make it to the MLB. But since these kids are generally great athletes, they play 2-3 sports. So a few have gone on to the NHL or NFL as well. One player Chris Drury, was the winning pitcher for a USA little league title and also went on to win a Stanley Cup title in the NHL. And the weirdest one, Austin Dillon. Baseball is a super fun game. I've never been a great athlete, but when you play a pick up game, or with friends and family, or in a neighborhood league, even just a regular person gets a chance for clutch plays, desperate dives, and home runs. It really feels great, like you're a big shot. Softball, pickle ball, mushball, whatever variant, baseball is fun to play at any age.

not all little leaguers, where I played we could choose as long as it was an approved bat, I used wood when I made it to the Little League Magers, which is mostly the best 12 year olds and the few really good 11 year olds. We had a babe ruth league for 13 year olds. I started playing first at 11. After my first day of practice I told my mom that I was switching from out field to pitching and first. She stopped at the sporting goods store to get me a new fielders mitt. She asked me again if I was really going to play first. I was really excited about it. I had watched my oldest brother play first since I was in tee ball and really new all the details at that position. She said well then your going to need the right glove for that. Being left handed I always found it hard finding a good glove and they're always more expensive. The only one they had was a wilson 2000 pro soft ball glove. On my 11 year old body it looked huge but I loved it. The next year in the Magers I had gotten so good coaches would try and protest that my glove was to big. It got so bad Umpires even measuard it a few times before a game. League rules are no glove can be longer than 113/4", mine was 111/2". :) About halfway through the year I would just hear them call me "the Glove" . Even as a 12 year old there was no better compliment. They knew that if the ball was anywhere close to me it didn't go past me. I used that glove all the way through High school and adult league play. Oh and by they way that was in 1977 & 78 so yah in the U.S. we have taken the way you play the game even in Little League very seriously. Sorry for the long back story but I thought Lavish Luka might enjoy it and get a little more insight to why these kids are able to play like they do. As a 12 year old we all ready understand the complexities of the game and are already perfecting them.

Little league world series is the best time of year. The whole country watches as the best teams from each state/ region compete in Williamsport PA. (That's where these clips are from). What makes it so crazy is they throw that hard from much closer than in the majors. A major league field is 90 feet for bases and 60 feet 6 inches for the pitcher. The little league fields are 60 feet bases and 46 feet for the pitchers. The reaction times are sometimes less for the little leagues since they throw so hard from so close. The whole thing is really such a spectacle. I'm not sure how many make it to the majors but not many. The teams are created through tournament play locally so I don't think the best players are always represented just the best teams, and even then most of the people that grow up to be the best players aren't at that age.

@@spybro3264 I think this depends on where you live in the country (and the organization). Youth baseball has many different leagues and affiliations. For example where I live most kids (the best of the area included, in an area that has produced several major league players) all play little league at that age. Then when older we have some American Legion teams and showcase teams, but pretty much everyone plays in little league. In other places I know other leagues are far more popular, Babe Ruth I think is the one I've heard the most about.

@aaronhoy3410

@@TehStormOG I don't think the reaction time is actually faster than the MLB's required reaction time. I mean it is a little rough to calculate because there are not really reliable statistics like there are in MLB [or at least not as easily found by someone who isn't really that into sports as MLB's are.] But using what info I've seen in various comments here of the little league fastballs going at 70 mph & the distance from mound to plate at 46 feet gives a time of 0.448 seconds. The average MLB fastball is 92.3 mph with distance of 60.5 feet yields a result of 0.447 seconds. Though that 70 mph for little league seems to be agreed upon as being high-end of the spectrum one would typically expect to see from the faster pitchers there. So, this number gives an extra benefit in their calculation. It would be like using a number of 99 [0.417 seconds] or 100 [0.413 seconds] for the MLB side. If we use 65 mph for little league as a more probable average speed for all the pitchers in the little league world series yields a result of 0.483 seconds. Either way if we use the 65 little league vs. 92.3 MLB or if one uses the 70 little league vs. 99/100 MLB it results in a roughly 7%-8% reduction in time to react for MLB compared to little league.

My wife and I drive past the fields in Williamsport regularly. I watch all the games on ESPN and enjoy the Major League announcers they bring in to do the games. One of these years I will make a game. The fields are prepared at a level that rivals any major league field. Admission to world series games is FREE. It is truly a magical place. Williamsport has a minor league pro team and their field is small , kinda was in disrepair. A few years ago, major league baseball made an agreement with little league to sponsor the Little League Classic. MLB remodeled the minor league field into a thing of beauty. The first MLB Classic was the Philadelphia Phillies vs The Pittsburgh Pirates...An all Pennsylvania game. The teams arrive early in the afternoon before the game. The players then visit with the kids in the game room (at the grove) and join the teams that are not playing in the stands to watch games. Later in the evening MLB hosts a game for the parents, kids and coaches participating in the world series. Only a few ticket are available to the public and they are the hottest tickets anywhere. Occasionally the Major League Umpires will step in and do a few innings of a series game or an entire game. Little League Umpires from around the world are allowed to do only one World Series in a life time. They must pay their own way to get to Williamsport. Their is a waiting list as long as your arm to Ump a World Series.

This is the annual Little League World Series, so these are the best teams & thus a lot of the best players. There are two brackets: the American and the International (non-Americans). Little League “all-star” teams from all the states play to determine regional winners - eg Northeast, Midwest, West, Southwest, Southeast, Great Lakes - to eventually determine a U.S. champion. For example, you’ll see Iowa (representing the Midwest) vs Rhode Island (Northeast), or New York (NE) vs Texas (SW). Then on the International side it’s countries (non-U.S.), so Japan or South Korea (representing Asia) could play Curaçao or Mexico (representing Latin America). Eventually the American champion plays the International champion for the overall LLWS title.

The Little League Baseball World Series is played each August in Williamsport, Pennsylvania since 1947. Players in tournament play range between 10 and 13 years of age but players cannot be over 12 years old at the onset of the current season. The field is 2/3 the size of an MLB field. It is 60 feet between bases. The pitcher's mound is 6 inches above home plate and is 46 feet from home plate. More than half of MLB players played in Little League Baseball as children. Some MLB players even played in the LLWS. Little League Baseball was founded in Williamsport, Pennsylvania in 1939 by Carl Stotz. The first World Series was played in 1947 with 11 teams from Pennsylvania and one from New Jersey. The Little League International Tournament is the largest annual tournament in the world with over 7,000 leagues participating. The Tournament levels are: 1. District Tournaments 2. Section Tournaments in several large states only. 3. State/National tournaments 4. Regional Tournaments and 5. World Series Tournament held in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Over 35,000 games are played worldwide in 8 weeks to determine the Little League Baseball World Champion. There is no admission fee to a Little League Baseball game. Little League Baseball World Series games are broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2, ABC and other channels supported by the ESPN network. There are two stadia at the LLWS: Howard J. Lamade and Volunteer. Lamade is the older and larger. Up to 50,000 people can watch a live game there. International Headquarters in Williamsport houses the coaches and players for the Series in Little League International Grove. Also on the campus are several practice fields, the International Headquarters building, the John Lundy Conference Center and the Little League Baseball Museum. Dugout is the official mascot. The players must recite the Little League Pledge before each game: I trust in God. I love my country and will respect its laws. I will play fair and strive to win; but win or lose, I will always do my best. US Regional Headquarters are located in Bristol, Connecticut; Indianapolis, Indiana; Warner Robbins, Georgia; Waco, Texas and San Bernardino, California. The Presidents of LLB: Carl Stotz (founder), Williamsport, Pennsylvania. (1939-1957) Peter J. McGovern, Detroit, Michigan. (1957-1984) Dr. Creighton Hale, Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Hi Luka... answers to questions: field is 2/3 size of an MLB field. Distance between bases = 60 feet vs. 90 feet MLB. Fence is 200' from home plate all the way around the outfield. Pitcher's mound is closer to home than an MLB mound. Typical speeds for these kids is between 40 to 60mph on average, but due to the distance difference, the conversion to MLB pitch speeds is typically between 70 - 90mph for the kids that throw best. This means reaction times for the kids is really no less than reaction times for MLB players because the ball still gets there just as fast due to the difference in distance from home plate. Tournament for little league world series has the winners of different zones across the world coming to Williamsport, PA every year and the winners of the different zones the US is divided into. They play an international bracket for the world teams, and a US bracket for the American teams. Then the winners of those two brackets play for the world championship. Double elimination tournament meaning you aren't out of it until you lose 2 games. Every team is guaranteed to play at least 3 games regardless to give the kids the best and most fun experience possible. You want to see something else really cool? Watch a video on Little League World Series Home Runs. Some of these kids can absolutely crank it!!!

Well, most MLB players usually played in some form of Little League growing up, but I would say that it's still very rare that being in Little League will make you a MLB player. The Little League World Series, which is admittedly always a fun event, usually takes All-star teams from local Little Leagues across the world and have them compete in regional competitions until they earn the right to represent their region at the LLWS in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Little League on it's basic level is just the early introductory local league that most kids play in growing up. whether they were good or not. The All-star teams represent the local league, and then they battle to represent, the city/area, then in the state and then usually the state champs battle each other depending on the region of the country, and there's similar paths for the international teams that represent the other countries of the world. (LLWS final is always a U.S. team vs. an International team, last I checked anyway.) Anyway, Little League is, for most kids fun. I played it for years and enjoyed it and I wasn't very good at all, but those who manage to shine and can make it to Williamsport, it's a pretty amazing once-in-a-lifetime accomplishment.

The field is generally 2/3 the size of a big league park. The bats are metal/composites instead of the wood bats in the big leagues (wood bats tend to explode and splinter when they break, so they don’t want kids playing with that danger). But because of the size of the field, the batters reaction time to pitches is as fast as a big leaguers, and the kids in the field have to react just as fast if not faster.

You might be interested in watching WBC (World Baseball Classic) highlights. It's like the World Cup, but for baseball. It's happened in 2006, 2009, 2013, 2017, and is next planned for 2021. Japan won 2006 and 2009, the Dominican Republic won in 2013, and the US won in 2017. The interesting thing is it can be a mix of MLB players and non-MLB players (i.e players from the NPB, Japan's professional league, can play for Team Japan if they wish). They also let players proud of their familial heritage play for that particular country, even if they were born and raised in the US. For instance, if you are an American MLB player and are proud of, say, your Italian heritage, you are allowed to play for Team Italy if you wish. A fun side effect of the WBC is sometimes MLB teammates will play against each other. You saw a clip of one such moment a while back, where a player playing for the Dominican Republic (Manny Machado) hit a long fly ball and a player from the US (Adam Jones) robbed him of a likely homerun. At the time, they were teammates on the same MLB team (Baltimore Orioles). As for this video, you might've noticed the ding of the bat as opposed the the normal crack. That's because they are using aluminum bats as opposed to normal wooden bats. Aluminum bats are used by players all the way through collegiate play. Once they become professionals they start to use wooden bats. I believe that's because younger players are less powerful hitters and the aluminum bats help make up for that lack of power.

The length from the pitcher’s mound to home plate is shorter too, and that basically evens out the reaction time for the batter compared to the MLB. So a 70mph fastball on a little league field would be similar (in terms of batter reaction time) to a 90mph fastball on a major league field. Pretty interesting stuff.

This smaller field is also used for softball, which uses a larger ball and is pitched underhand. Softball comes in two varieties; fast pitch which is played just like baseball, and slow pitch which has 10 players in the field and some minor rule changes.

This was probably already commented on but the bats are smaller for younger players, obviously, because of their size. For 12 year olds, their bats range from 22 oz to 25 oz, usually. Bat sizes are referred to as "29 drop 8", for example. The first number is the length of the bat and the "drop" refers to the weight. A 30 drop 8 is a 30" length and 22 oz. Bats are metal vs wood for MLB which means the weight of the bat can be changed to suit the age and size of the players.

The little league World Series is one of the bigger sporting events of the year in the US, I’m an American and I’ve watched every year since I can remember. The kids throw anywhere from 65-75 mph making an inexact translation to around 85-95 mph in MLB because the mound is a shorter distance to the plate. In terms of which states are the best, it’s kind of all over the place. I would say states like California and Florida produce a good amount of talent because the weather allows year round play, but also southwestern states with a heavy Mexican population like Arizona and Texas produce a lot too. Also MLB has the most international talent of any pro sport in the US with a lot of great great players coming from countries like the Dominican Republic, Japan, Mexico, and so on. Lots of diversity in baseball and that’s why Americans like me love the game so much. Hopefully that answered some of your questions you had

A note for international teams: These are not national selections (like you would see in soccer U13, U15 ...). These teams are usually put together by tryouts in a small region. Then, they have to go up against other teams in their nation, and then (if applicable) teams from other nations (i.e. european/african region, the carribean, etc.).

Little league fields have 60 foot bases (the pros have 90), and the mound is about 8 feet closer. This actually makes the skill level very comprable as the shorter distance makes the slower pitches seem just as fast.

So bear in mind these are the best of the best little leaguers around the world. This is the final tournament for the best “all-star” teams for each region after weeks of elimination games. Also note that some of the kids have turned 13 by the time they’ve reached this stage. The field is much smaller, but honestly, you’ll see some massive kids so sometimes they make the field seem even smaller. This tournament is actually pretty big here in the US each year. Finally, the bags are a bit different; they are softer and easier to pop out or “breakaway” to avoid the kids injuring themselves when sliding into them and the pitchers consistently get into the 50/60mph range, but due to the field size are usually equivalent to MLB pitches in the 90’s

The Little League World Series has VERY strict rules about how long a pitcher can pitch, how many games he can appear in, and how frequently. The managers have to shuffle their lineups all the time. Of course, the pitchers are usually the best athletes, so when they aren't pitching, they're playing other positions. The games have huge attendances, because not only do the locals from Williamsport come to the games, but a lot of the teams bring their families. The TV coverage is intensive. They love to interview the kids, even when they don't speak English. They always ask all of the players who their favorite Major League players are. The locals kind of adopt the foreign teams, and take them under their wings. It's a very big deal for Williamsport.

I tried to tell you , these things are taken VERY seriously , these kids start out young from T-ball to little league (6-7 y.o)(8-9 y.o) (10-11y.o) and so on and usually play for their high school and or college . Then move on to Double A ball which is a step under the MLB and get drafted from college , Double A ball or sometimes right out of high school . So they have plenty of time to practice before getting to the big leagues when and if they make it (get drafted) . All American sports are a blast , insane and unpredictable (not to say other countries are not) . The excitement and all around good time you have at these games is another level . I personally enjoy them so much I sometimes go to games when my teams aren't necessarily playin just for the simple fact of loving the atmosphere and what ever team may be playing for that particular sport .

As a general rule the bat you use should come up to your waist if you put the barrel on the ground and the handle at your waist. As you get taller, you also get stronger and can use bigger bats. Little league bats are also made from Aluminum while MLB bats are wooden. Aluminum bats are much lighter and require less force to hit a ball as far.

Someone has probably said it, but remember the video about how hard it is to hit a major league fastball because of the reaction time? Based on timing and a shorter field, 60-70 mph is like an upper 90s pitch to batters in MLB terms. There’s probably a better way to explain that but yeah, these kids are essentially hitting 90 mph MLB pitches, even though they’re slower in velocity.

I'm not sure how much smaller the field is in these games compared to a MLB field, but I do know that some of the Little League pitchers can reach speeds of over 70 miles per hour. And due to the fact that the distance between the pitcher's mound to Homeplate is so much smaller the reaction time of the batters here is the same as a major league batter hitting an over 90 miles per hour pitch thrown in the major leagues.

I played little league for 6? years and every time I hear that metal bat hitting the ball I instinctively tense my legs and arms. (talk about ptsd LOL) In my last year I was pitching at 104 mph and as a result I was intentionally pegged basically every game.(typically a little league pitcher is throwing fast balls at around 60mph so they thought I was on steroids) They would literally put in a starting pitcher just to hit me and get kicked out and replace with the real pitcher. For your other question if you take an entire city district, maybe 1 or 2 of those players will end up trying for the MLB, and maybe 1/100 of them will get into the major leagues. Those metal bats are heavy so you swing slower but the balls are the same as major league.

Bats are smaller, but in Little League, they're made of metal, instead of wood like MLB bats. There's actually been some controversy with this over the years; the metal bats used to be made of aluminum, which apparently made the ball fly off the bats faster then wood bats, and lead to more severe injuries. They've changed it, to a different metal, I think in recent years so that the bats are made differently so that they act more like wood bats. It's a bit of a complicated issue that's still debated, but generally they are smaller, but the material they're made of is the big detail of discussion.

One point that I don’t think has been said!
