Yeah I've been a huge San Francisco Giants fan my whole life, and those Barry Bonds years were so frustrating. He was incredible to watch but they could never win the whole thing. Luckily, since his career ended after 2007, the Giants have found a lot of success, winning 3 championships for 2010, 2012 and 2014.

Life long Giants fan here. The teams surrounding Bonds weren't scrubs. They had decent pitching, and another guy who could crush the ball in Matt Williams (home run machine) earlier, and Jeff Kent (RBI machine) later. I am pretty sure the Giants would have won the World Series if Jeff Kent didn't tank, and if Dusty Baker would have pulled Russ Ortiz in 2002. They had a 5-0 lead with 7 outs to go!

Wasn’t the anti hero to me growing up. He was and always will be the greatest baseball player I’ve ever witnessed. On tv and in person. First game at Pac Bell Park as a kid, he smokes two balls with one being a Splash Hit. The electricity he brought to the plate was incredible. No pitcher wanted to face him

Barry Bonds started going on the juice around 1998 (this is what he says, and I believe him - the change was noticeable). Prior to that, he was already the only person in history to hit 400 home runs and steal 400 bases. He was already on the shortlist for the greatest players of all time. But his ego wouldn't allow him to play second fiddle to Sosa & McGwire's home run chase. The result is both a tragedy and an awe-inspiring comedy. Someone who already had magnificent power and a once-in-a-generation eye at the plate became a trustee of modern chemistry. Bonds on the juice was the most absurd sporting thing anybody has ever seen. It's so ludicrously unfair that it looped back around to awe-inspiring.

Barry Bonds currently (even though no one's ever going to do this) has the MLB record for most home runs in a career with 762, which is 34.6 homers per season. He also has the record for most homers in a season with 73. He played 153 games in 2001, which means it takes him an average of 2.096 games to hit a home run. He was determined that he took steroids, but recently he was allowed on the Hall of Fame bracket. I believe that one comment is referring to the video on SB Nation's channel. It was a video predicting how Barry Bonds would've done if he never had a bat.

The 2004 thing....he reached 1st base 135 times due hit bat....he reached it 232 times because he was walked. He reached base more time without swinging than swinging! I can't remember the year, but he was hitting home runs every 3 plate appearances, maybe it was 4, but that crazy numbers.

What the casual sports/baseball fans and Barry Bonds haters fail to recognize is that Barry put up HUGE numbers before the scandal. He won gold gloves and batting titles since he was a Pirate. Also, his father was the great Bobby Bonds who was team mates of legendary Willie Mays who became his God Father. Barry learned baseball from the histories best all around players on top of having Baseball DNA.

You should look at the MLB pitcher Jim Abbott.... the man played for a decade and had a no-hitter. What makes him unique to almost every other player in MLB ever is that he was born without a right hand. He player professional baseball as pitcher with only one hand. If its not clicking why that's impressive, he had to catch the ball with the baseball glove, and throw the ball without the glove with the same hand.

There’s a period of baseball that everyone somewhat shamefully remembers as the “steroid era”. There were not really enforceable regulations on players about using PEDs and with the competitive nature of the sport, it really got out of control. During this period starting in the 90s to about 2004, you saw the average player’s bodies get so huge and muscular that it could not have been natural and there was a lot of controversy over how to handle the situation. No one wanted to be honest, and still today there is controversy over the legacies of players like Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, and many others. Bonds and McGwire both broke two long standing records that are considered sacred and highly respected. The fact that they had the advantage of chemicals to achieve that makes us all really sad. Also Bonds was an asshole

But in my opinion, Aaron taking greenies one time out of a 22 year career is not the same as what Bonds did, and and what Bonds repeatedly lied about doing. Aaron and Bonds are the only ones who know the 100% truth in their stories, but Aaron seems much more honest in my opinion.

One of the reasons that the giants lost despite Bonds, is that often, if Bonds could of won the game for them, pitchers wouldn't pitch to him. Bonds is the best hitter of all time, hands down. Among his strength, one of his best attributes was his hitting eye. Bonds among the best at discerning whether a pitch was going to be a strike or a ball. Throw it in the zone, and he could punish you by possibly hitting a home run or an extra base hit, don't throw it in the zone, and he'll likely take it for a ball, forcing you to either walk him, or throw it in the zone, and risk him hitting it. I agree that the fault lies far from solely on Bonds' massive shoulders. But to take down the 2 most coveted records in MLB history, reuniting the single season and all time home run records, by using steroids... I felt very similarly of McGuire and Sosa, who took down the single seasom record. Then Bonds broke even that and also overtook Hammerin Hank. He was far from the only one, but to be as good as he was without steroids, one of the all time greats, and then to add massive amounts of steroids to that, just broke records in a way that leaves a permanent mark on the books.

So basically he was one of the best players of the 1990s and he had a relatively lean frame. Then, in the late 90s other, lesser skilled players started bulking up on PEDs and absolutely crushing home runs. Allegedly, Barry Bonds, who was already a baseball great, decided if these lesser skilled players were going to dominate the home run stats with the help of PEDs, he was going to use PEDs himself and show everyone what a real talent would look like on PEDs. The other, less skilled players have admitted to PED use, while Bonds has never admitted to use, but most people assume that to be the case from his change in body shape. Still, his talent could not be denied and why many believe he should be inducted into the hall of fame regardless of PED allegations.

PED is Performance Enhancing Drugs, its sort of a catch all term for steroids and steroid like drugs a player might take to enhance their performance, hence the name. A "Balanced Breakfast" is Foolish Baseball's tongue in cheek way to refer to a player's PED usage.

I don't think people truly appreciate the absurdity of that last stat line. a .480 On base. If you believe that he did PED/Steroids whatever, the general settled timeline for that was 2000-2003. (then they started putting in stricter testing so from what we know of the story he was off). So that dude was 43 years old. had come off some injuries...wasn't particularly moving well at all (basically kinda broke down at that point) and STILL put up a .480 on base. It's just stupid. Love or hate him, there is no way around the fact that the dude was ridiculous.
