So Clyde actually did win, he smiled when he realized Nick did he wanted him to do. He isolated Nick to make sure he became an uncompromising District Attorney. He wanted Nick to kill him. The “boyfriend” that the blond lawyer was Clyde, Clyde wanted Nick to find his hideout and Nick had to break the rules to break into his hideout and gave him that property so he could find it. He used napalm rather than C4, which would have killed the room above, but used napalm because it would not take out anyone else besides himself. He gave Nick 30 seconds to escape. Clyde wanted to die at Nick’s hands. There are tons of other tidbits that show that Clyde won the game, an uncompromising district attorney that he installed himself. Nick became exactly what he wanted.

This is possibly the best movie out there to react to, and you’re one of the only reactors to do it. Thanks, mate! The studio did shoehorn this ending in, but it ultimately works because it shows that Clyde wins no matter what. This is what we call a “constructive dilemma” in logic. The object lesson is worth his life. Also, there is a poignant beauty in tragic endings, and Clyde becomes a martyr with a saint’s impassive death.

As long as the bad guys are confirmed to be the bad guys. There is an old ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS episode about a woman who was beaten and raped, and the rapist was never found. The husband picks up his wife from the hospital, and while they are driving home, the wife points to a man near the hospital and identifies him as the rapist. The husband immediately isolates the man and beats him to death before returning to the car, satisfied that justice was done... ...until the wife sees a DIFFERENT man and identifies HIM as the rapist. While the husband is trying to comprehend what happened, she sees ANOTHER man...and IDs HIM as the rapist. And she does the same for the next...and the next...and the next...until the husband realizes she sees EVERY man other than him as her rapist. Aim your anger...but be SURE that you're looking at the right target.

They could make a sequel/franchise. We never saw him die. It could be that Clyde was so smart he built two exits/entrances to the cell. They only discovered the one and assumed it was all there was. The sweet irony is Gerard Butler was actually studying to be a lawyer when he dropped out of law school to become an actor. I wanted to love this movie, but I think it fell short. I can't entirely put my finger on it but the ending is one of the reasons. I wish it did go further and have a much darker ending, like Seven. The first act is great! Gerard Butler's character brings up so many great things that you might not think of, the hypocrisy, and the loopholes. I think the movie starts to go downhill when Gerard Butler is in prison and starts to make demands. The script could have been stronger but in my opinion the best line is "It's not what you know, it's what you can prove in court." When I heard that, it clicked in my brain because I realized how true it is. The state/ plaintiff have to prove their case, the defense doesn't have to. They have to cast doubt. The American court system sounds inherently good. There are legitimate wonderful aspects of it: legal right to council, 12 jurors of your own peers, one judge to oversee, etc, but it's so complicated with many loopholes people can get for the right price (money, blackmail, etc.). Also, it's a good reminder that when you are a victim, or related to a victim of a crime, you have no control over the police and the court system. You literally sit there while others play chess with lives, your's and the defendant's.

I Loved how sadistic you two were, LOL!! A more beautiful ending would have cut to a tropical island one month later showing Gerard Butler's character alive and well and enjoying a nice, peaceful life. :D

How the hell did Jamie Foxx get away with bringing a bomb into prison? And how did he run from Solitary to outside the prison in 30 seconds?

To be clear, there's a difference between justice and punishment. What he did to Darby, was punishment... It's hard to justify torture as justice, and just leads to people confusing the two, which is dangerous and leads to a lot more anarchy. The simple fact is, sometimes punishment is just more appropriate than justice, and it's important that people understand the difference

"The simple fact is, sometimes punishment is just more appropriate than justice, and it's important that people understand the difference" I would argue that this is not fact, but instead very individual. An example are child rapists. Some people want them to just die, others want them to suffer, others feel sorry for them, christians will even invite them to heaven. So to claim that sometimes punishment is more appropriate than justice is imho incorrect. You will find people on both sides of that debate, depending on the crime you want to punish/dispense justice upon, and which person/people is making the decision.

In the original script he was supposed to win, it was Jamie Foxx (not the studio), that told them to change it because he doesn't think the bad guy should win

I actually think Gerard’s character dying at the end was the best way to end it, because although he won over all, by making Jamie’s character finally get it, his whole point was that people had to be held accountable for their actions, and as Jamie was trying to tell him at the end, that applies to him too, and he lost sight of that in trying to make everyone else see it. A moment of arrogance blinding him from the possibility that Jamie might turn it around on him, because he let it go to his head and lost sight of his own message, and so he paid for that with his life, even though he still had the over all victory. So it actually does make sense for Gerard to have died at the end, because he had to face his own consequences, for causing even more of the pain he had felt, just as Jaime said.

I’ve watched this movies dozens of times and it’s definitely one of my all time favorites but a lot of people hate the studio for how it ended and wanted to see Clyde win. As a fan of this movie it would’ve been cool to see Clyde win but after a while I came to realize the ending kind of makes sense now. Clyde told Nick at one point he was teaching him to keep his word and everyone needs to be accountable for their actions. Even though I love the way Clyde went after the system, at the end of the day he killed dozens of people and he had to face his own belief and be held accountable which I understand now 👌🏽

My problem with the ending had little to do with morality, and more to do with reality. Clyde plants the bomb. Then leaves. The cops search the whole floor, and find the bomb. Then they somehow get back to Clyde's cell, plant the bomb, erase all evidence of their presence at the tunnels and workshop, And then get to the outside of the cell, all before Clyde can merely drive back to the Cell. Right.

@@joshmitchell8370 Well remember on his was back to the tunnel Clyde got stuck in traffic and mad some sort of detour which could’ve took longer than it took when he went to City Hall at first. Think if they jumped in a cruiser and and raced back to the jail they could’ve beaten him. And remember Clyde had to hide the van he was driving, change back into his uniform and get the phone ready he used for the bomb.

7:25 - yeah, it tends to freeze muscles, including the ones you use to move your lungs and suck in air. Meaning that Darby would be dead from asphyxiation in a minute or two after such an injection.
