I think that Gérard Butler’s character knew everything that was going to happen before I did He was just waiting for Jamie Foxx to learn his lesson He probably had a failsafe to get out of it, and he knew that Jamie Foxx would find the bomb because he didn’t even try to hide it Nobody who is that meticulous would leave a case sitting in the middle of the floor It was all plan from the beginning

Rare film where the villain wins at the end. No comeuppance for the lawyer after all the carnage and apparently gets to have a closer relationship with his family. A little odd they would have known at the start Butler cashed out his money and bought a bunch of property but never bother to do a deep dive in any of them until the end of the film.

I always have a love/hate relationship with this movie mainly because of how cold Nick is towards Clyde, as all he cares about is his conviction rating, I definitely wanted Clyde to win.
@jmaurice722 жыл бұрын
It was so high profile lawyer like. He only played nice in the beginning to get him to agree to the deal. And Clyde was just a law abiding citizen 🙄 🤣
@hyperyami3962 жыл бұрын
@@jmaurice72 Exactly. We all know killing people for revenge is wrong and against the law, but the level of sympathy and empathy you have for Clyde is way into outer space. Meanwhile, Nick is just being detestable. I wish they made a sequel of this movie showing a more matured Nick dealing with another terrible situation, but handling it differently this time and the killer is a lot less like Clyde and more deranged making us identify with Nick. Your thoughts?

The movie starts off with a brutal murder, which doesn't seem out of place as a standard home invasion... then we later get told that Clyde is some super brain who plans spy missions better than anyone else... but he opened his door at night without checking who was knocking?

The whole concept of the movie is what makes it work, because in real life is not that simple either, especially with the law, these characters live and operate in a grey area, and that idea clashes with your ideals as an audience, another interesting thing is how this movie doesn't get more recognition, is well acted, well made, and well written, but for some reason is kind of forgotten.
@Prizm174 ай бұрын
I think it’s solely because of that ending, it really took the movie down a peg, butler can die in the movie but he shoulda still won from beyond the grave, a deadman switch type of thing of you will

You take Steve Austin's The Condemned (2007), then Death Race (2008) and then Gamer (2009), also with Gerard Butler as a triple feature! (I got this from a brief image on YMS' review on the sequels to Death Race (2008))

My one complaint is that scene where they talk about him having a background with military intelligence, or whoever it was. I think that really kills a lot of what the film was supposed to be. But with it being such a small moment, it's easy enough to ignore

Exactly. It's sold on the idea of being just a regular guy who spent years working on the details. It screams studio interference, to me. Likee they were too scared to fully commit to the idea. Like how, with _Falling Down_ , we're told he's just a guy who loses his shit. But then we learn he's actually a violent, abusive sociopath. Don't want to be _too_ controversial

Law abiding is one of my all time favs! I watched this as a kid, and even as a grown up I always skip the first scene and go right to the scene with Jaime Foxx. Clyde did still win. Nick had to resort to Clyde's methods to beat him. He couldn't do it within the limits of the law. Also, for the sequel...he could have easily had a second escape, just in case. Or he survived and is just badly burned. If he's even in it. Would be interesting if the sequel follows Nick actually using what he learned from Clyde to deal with criminals in the future.

The ending totally ruins what is a great revenge movie upto that point and they should have done a alternate ending in which Clyde does win by making Nick kill him in cold blood after planting a bomb at his house which blows up causing Nick to lose it and kill him in front of Detective Dunnigan thus ruining his life finishing with Nick getting a call from his wife saying they are safe. If we had got that ending or something similar in which Clyde wins, it would have made the film much better as the film is all about the flaws in the justice system.

The problem with the movie is that they made the “villain” too relatable, likeable and intelligent, and the “hero” not relatable or likeable at all. So when it came to the end of the story, they struggled to reconcile these two factors, leading to a really dissatisfying ending where they had to retcon Clyde’s intelligence just so he could be beaten by a hero who learns nothing from his own misdeeds

Nick was always the real villain to me as he used his job to only further his career while ignoring goodness knows how many cases where he allowed perpetrators to go free. A perfect ending would have been both Clive and Nick dying in the prison cell. Both paying for their crimes, although I'm pretty sure Clive died (inside) when his daughter died.
@dragonwarden939 ай бұрын
The reason the ending is kinda bad is because Jamie Fox cried to director and wanted to be the main hero of the movie. If the director and people behind it didn't agree, he said he would walk. So they had to change the original ending they planned and make Jamie's character win in the end!!

The ending is a travesty to the natural story arc of the story. Once Nick says he doesn’t make deals anymore, then Leonidas should purposely trigger his bed bomb in a satisfying suicide instead of the bomb at the mayor’s offices. That makes the best story progression and makes the whole thing an actual morality play. Instead we get some dumbass action “hero” in a jarringly discordant climax. Dud dud dud.
