It war law out overcoming the disease. It took a tremendous amount of Haki. So seeing how your opponent responds and knowing what it takes to overcome it would allow one to make a tactical decision on how to fight. If the opponent is just shrugging your diseases off without losing much stamina, your best bet is to inform your captain that the difficulty of this fight might incur possible losses. Law however was showing signs of exhaustion overcoming only a single disease. With the others like Van Augr and Jesus Burgess now with a devil fruit plus Blackbeard it was already a huge advantage having warn out Law even a little. Still think Blackbeard was dumb to take a shock wile mid air over the sea. Had some one taken care of Van Augr during that time Blackbeard would be sinking to the bottom of the sea.

They allow people to get in their own way so they don't get in his. And if they make it out of the predicament that BB puts them in. Then he invites them to join him. Was also an interesting way to showcase that haki can at least in some way counter devil fruits. Curious if Oda thought it was a mistake cause it has barely come up again lol.
