Law Enforcement Vs. Civilian! Hornady Critical Duty Vs Critical Defense 3" and 4.5" Barrel Gel Test

I just watched the Hornady podcast about defense v duty and the barrel length thing is correct. The defense is only meant to penetrate 8-12” they said whereas the duty is supposed to be 14-16” but also using all the clothing mediums before the gel block as is standard for the fbi testing protocol they follow.

Your good with the duty. Note clear gel will typically over penetrate vs organic gel by a few inches. So that 18” is more like 16”

I use the Critical Duty 135 grain for my G17 and G26, zero problems, works all the time. The performance as you demonstrated is very consistent regardless of barrel length which is actually impressive. There are other gel tests by ia Tools and Targets which confirm the same.

Glad to see you testing these two rounds, nice work. PS. As a guy that's had knee surgery, the way your sitting down on your rt foot puts your knee at high risk of tearing your meniscus which is the pad between the bones , it's very painful should it happen. Nice testing Buddy.

Interesting results . I remember seeing a spec sheet from Hornady released back when this stuff was brand new stating that critical duty was optimized for 5” barrels ( I think the wording was barrels over 4.5” ) and critical defense was optimized for 4.5” barrels and smaller . Wonder if adding some denim to the front of the block would add or take away from the performance as this is what they are made for with the nylon insert .

Honestly, I doubt it'd make much difference. I know Hornady has some videos testing their Critical Duty through the FBI barrier test

You can’t go by 12 to 18 inches because that’s in organic gel not clear gel they do respond differently. Bullets will expand better and have a better wound track due to the density in organic. I know, clear gel is easy to use an easy to see, but I don’t think it should have the same penetration depth as organic because the bullets respond differently

According to Andrew from thechoppingblock, most pistol calibers will have penetration and expansion results within a normal range of error in clear gel vs organic

I'd like to do that video, however I have no way of getting organic gel, for one, and I don't have the ability to keep it within the proper temperature range. Without being the right temperature, it wouldn't be accurate to the specifications anyway. Could I get stuff to do it? Oh sure, maybe, but it would cost money. And that's something I don't have any of at the moment. Companies don't send me stuff for free

YOU SHOULD AT LEAST HAVE A HEAVY CLITHING BARRIER...and critical defense is , and why i don't use it, is engineered to penetrate 8-12 inch and not over penetrate... so it did for you exactly what it was designed to do.
