In this video, I simulate the FBI Barrier test and try out the Speer 62gr Gold Dot and the Hornady Superperformance 53gr V-Max 223 loads. The test is designed to test out how various loads will perform terminally should someone, law enforcement or civilian, have to engage a target through a barrier.

See? This is logical thinking. However, there are a lot of people that use the vmax round for self defense. That's why I did this.

@@TheKalkara131 That's so weird for me to wrap my head around using an actual varmint round for a life or death situation. I guess people use these due to a severe lack of knowledge when it comes terminal ballistics. The human anatomy is a resilient beast.... Using something ment for critters that weigh a max of 100ibs for defense just seems very wrong. Honestly, I'm also tired of seeing the "over penetration" myth being perpetuated so widely, especially with all the different data points, "just like your video", and many other great examples that counter the penetration argument more than soundly..... Even with typical fmj rounds, if you hit your target the chances of the bullet still having enough energy to actually puncture human skin is practically nill

I had a SD situation 2 years ago this month, 60gr vmax is what i had in my rifle, one shot is all it took and i wasnt breathing, seeing straight or processing the situation because or the speed of events, meaning i wasnt in the same skill set as when i practice. Terrifying and miserable to go though. The officers asked me what i used (handloads in 5.56mm 60gr vmax) and i told him 60gr vmax going pretty fast. He just said "Wow, thats gnarly". I was surprised gow supportive and happy for me they were. They were amazed what 1 shot did to the solar Plex.

I recently found your channel, just want to say I appreciate your content. 62gr gold dot did well, too bad it is under velocity by 300 fps. I think Hornady 55gr sp is also an excellent choice for a duty (barrier blind) round. While the 53gr vmax does not penetrate very well, it does cause massive wounds. Based on the coroners reports I have seen, it can make extremity and upper torso injuries extremely severe, similar to #4 buckshot. You might not strike a vital organ and get an immediate stop, however you will cause exsanguination if the target does not receive immediate care. I would only recommend it to people who want/need to use 5.56 and do not want penetration through walls (i.e. apartments).

I wouldn’t take a fragmenting varmint round to battle, but I have no hesitation keeping it loaded for home defense. With 30 rounds and the speed at which I can shoot, every shot is going to dump its entire energy into the bad guy while ripping apart huge swaths of flesh, bone, and muscle. All it takes is for one fragment to reach the heart too. And you don’t rely on head shots, but a Vmax to the dome will.. 🤯

@@CHAOSTACTICAL I have a lot of padding, so I just may! But, really, in an extreme case, you can't rely on energy transfer, the fear of or pain from getting shot, to stop a threat. It will in most situations, but you can't control how someone will react to it. All you can control is shot placement, and your chosen load penetrating deep enough to poke holes in vital organs. Vmax is less likely than others to do that.

The velocities on that vmax seems low to me. I'm getting 3360FPS avg from a 20" FNA4, you should be getting at least 3250FPS from a 16" barrel. I took a deer and a feral hog with 53gr vmax last year, DRT instant drop from chest shots but only about 7" of penetration and extreme fragmentation. There was a bigger than golfball size hole in the deer heart but the bullet barely made it that far. All I found was the polymer tip. I also shot a 150lb feral hog with a 55gr gold dot on a separate occasion and had a double shoulder/leg bone complete passthrough instant drop. Those speer bullets are insanely hard for bonded projectiles, almost hard cast levels of hardness.

How do you think the standard XM193 ball ammo stacks up against the gold dot? I know that hollow points are usually preferred and that’s why I carry them in my handgun for edc, but the 193 is going around 3100 fps out of a 16 inch barrel compared to the 2600 of the gold dot. That velocity causes a lot of tumbling damage and, unlike a lot of other calibers in fmj, as far as I can tell, it doesn’t, “over penetrate,” which I don’t worry about much anyways since I live in a rural area. The gold dot clearly did VERY well, but a green tip is the same weight as it and it’s going about 3000 fps from a 16 inch. They seem to be loaded just a bit hotter for some reason. I think the 193 is a bit better then green tip tho so that’s why I brought it up first. I’d love to hear your opinion on it tho because I’m debating on what to load my home defense rifle with and I don’t really know if I want to spend the high dollar prices for specialty ammo if it’s not really giving me a benefit because of the lower velocities. I’m basically thinking what’s better here velocity or speed? Great video btw! I’m a new subscriber.

Practicing is the most important thing and when you buy expensive Gold Dot ammo you become hesitant to shoot it up at the range. That's bad. Go with the M193. M193 penetrates 3/8" steel plates at 100 yards, it causes massive soft tissue damage on living targets because it tumbles and fragments, when properly zeroed it is extremely accurate out to 300 yards and can hit a man sized target out to 500 yards. Also, it is very inexpensive. Which means you can practice a lot with it and that is by far the most important thing. There is a difference between a premium ammo like the Gold Dot and regular M193 but it's a tiny little difference. What's important to remember is that all of these rifle ammos will absolutely positively destroy whatever/whoever you're shooting at. And also don't forget that many people buy premium ammo because they don't train and they think that if they buy this "magic bullet" it will make up for their lack of training.
@Nick-sx6jm
@Nick-sx6jm Жыл бұрын
@@timrobinson6573 There is more than a tiny difference between a premium bonded bullet and fmj. Its a pretty huge difference especially at longer ranges as fmj will not reliably frag or tumble once it gets below around 2700 fps. m193 is very effective at close range and cheap but still not as good. Practice with fmj and keep a mag or two loaded with something better. Also not sure why speer loads these at such low velocity but you can get fusion msr that is going closer to 2900 and its the exact same bullet. The best option is to reload as you can get these for $20 per 100 and load them up to 3100.

But the problem is, organic gel is a lot more expensive, can't be remelted and reused, has to be kept at a certain temperature and goes bad.

I think the depth requirement is because they are thinking worse case scenario. I weigh 165 and from my chest to back, it's 10" and 18" from arm chest to arm. So maybe half that to reach my vitals? I imagine someone that's like 400 lbs would be alot bigger, so that's why you need like 18" from every possible entry point on the body. I'm taking like front, back, from the side hitting through the arms. From below, like if they were upstairs and you had to shoot through the guts etc...
@TheKalkara131
@TheKalkara131 10 күн бұрын
@@FC2ESWS it's absolutely accounting for the worst possible scenario. But the other thing you have to consider is penetration in gel isn't a 1:1 correlation to penetration in a human body. The human body has multiple factors. Bones, fat, muscle, tendons, all with different elasticities and hardness. You have to remember, in ballistics gel, even a BB will penetrate a few inches
