i think the people being 'fake' comes across in small talk, like at a grocery store where the cashier asks how are you and you say fine, no matter how youre feeling. or at a queue you might have small talk with some people, just for the sake of it, not really because you wanna know stuff about them. it can seem fake, especially if your culture isnt like that back home (in finland people dont usually even say hi at a bus stop to strangers without reason, bc of the culture), they just have different culture and traditions with being polite. where as my country sees not talking to strangers too much as being polite, americans see it the other way around :D

+anna This is true Anna. I remember being an Erasmus student in Finland and I thought that other students hated me since they did not reply "hi" back. Then i learned it's not like that... Btw I love Finland and I would love to go back there, at least to visit. This was one of the best years in my life!

polkame yes finns are very reserved and respect that other people want to have their privacy. i myself dont like the fact that we cant say hello to someone for example at a bus stop without it beeing a bit weird but i think were getting there. once you get the hang of our culture and traditions concentrating on behaviour with others this is actually quite a nice place. im glad you enjoyed it here :)

I moved to America at the age of two and I STILL cannot bring myself to care for the fake politeness of many Americans that you mentioned hahaha. I used to feel bad but after long enough I just got tired of it and I no longer entertain it. I've learned that if you just smile sweetly (without answering ) as a response to any of the questions, they'll accept it haha
