I was an evening law student! I graduated in May (thank goodness). It was a 4-year program but we also had to take classes for 3 summer terms. My schedule was so much like Bree's schedule. Work: 8-5 M-F School: 6-10 M-TH Studying: Friday nights & weekends I'm preparing for the Florida bar exam now. Wish me luck! This was super interesting. Thanks for doing this interview!

I’m a PT student. My schedule pre-Covid was: M-Th: 9 AM - 5 PM work, 5:30 PM - 9 PM class, 9 PM - 11 PM reading. (sometimes I’m on a conf call till right before the class or after the class, and sometimes I have time to hangout before the class) Friday: work, take the evening off (this is important) Sat/Sun: 2 - 10 PM study I still had 1 evening (Fri) and 2 mornings (Sat/Sun) for myself. And I didn’t have to change the schedule much for the finals. Treat the school work as you do for your work and keep up, you’ll be fine.

As a parent of three and the only income earner, I'm leaning heavily towards part time law school, but I worry about balancing work, schoolwork, and parenting.

That does sound really challenging. I guess it depends on how much of the parenting your spouse is willing to do, or if you have any family around who can help. Or maybe you could wait until your children are older and more independent. Just some ideas.

That's really amazing!! It would definitely be challenging, but not impossible. I was talking with someone else in a similar situation, and my advice was to get really clear on her "why" (i.e. make sure becoming a lawyer is something she really wanted for her life) because she knew she would be making a lot of sacrifices to get there. There are cheaper, faster ways to create a career path, make good money, and succeed in the business world, but of course going to law school is the only way to become a lawyer. So if that's something you know deep down that you want for your life, then there are adjustments and tradeoffs you can absolutely make to make it happen :)

Here is the fun schedule: 7:30am - 8:30am Wake up to read and review reading or class notes 8:30am - 9:00am - login to work for emails, meditate (quickly!), very fast morning routine for conf calls 9:00am - 12:30pm - work 12:30pm - 1:00pm - read a chapter / case brief 1:00pm - 1:30pm - work call or eat 1:30pm - 1:45pm - quick workout so brain focuses 1:45pm - 4:30pm - work 4:30pm - 4:50pm - ready for class 4:50pm - 6:30pm - commute to class 6:30pm - 9:30pm - class 9:30pm - 9:45pm - clean up after class and settle notes 9:45pm - 11:10pm - commute home (lately through hurricanes - they do not cancel class for weather - a big surprise to me) 11:10pm - 11:30pm - ready for bed 11:30pm - 7:30am - pray for sleep, but anxiety prevents it so you stay up to post-class review and clean up notes I currently struggle because I'm used to working out 2 hours a day, and without that I'm not sleeping as well. I need to explore solutions to that, but otherwise it could be worse. Good luck to all of us!

I am in DC and contemplating part time law school as well. When you asked her about her schedule, she never mentioned when she actually does the readings, outlines and papers. I’m assuming she does it ALL on the weekends.

Correct! Bree mentioned that to me during our conversation -- she reserves Sundays to do all of her reading for class that week, and also on the train from work to class when she can!

I am a part-time evening student at a law school in the Midwest and I do all my work on both Saturdays and Sundays. I also try to find times during the week to do my work, but I'm the type of person that prefers to have a larger chunk of time to really focus rather than 30 mins here and there. For me personally anything less than an hour is hard for me to get things done/feel productive. There is no right way to do it! 😊

@@grlwnder1317 it is definitely a fear I have! I was grateful to find a group of people that gets to campus about an hour before class and we chat. I hesitate to call it a study group because we tend to do more socializing than studying during that time before class, but we often at least talk over some of the topics from the cases to refresh ourselves right before class. I also know people that do some work on the weekends, but then either get up early before work or stay up late to prep for class the next day. (I'm neither a morning nor a night person) You need to find what works for you and give yourself a little grace as routines may need to change.

Do part-time students still participate in the summer internships even though they work full-time?

I asked Bree about this and she said that they definitely can. Some part-time students come in with jobs that they intend to keep after they graduate law school so they're not looking for new jobs. Others come in with jobs but are actively looking for new jobs, and in that case can absolutely get summer internships or summer associateships, but you will need to make sure you're communicating with your current employer. As you can imagine, if you're actively taking on other internship roles you will be indicating to your current employer that you are looking to make a move. Some will be absolutely supportive of that and others will push back, so just make sure to think about that heading in. Bree also mentioned that there are a handful of part-time students who are currently working as paralegals and their law firms are supporting them in becoming full-time law associates, and so they "summer" with their current law firm.

I was wondering how there is any time to study at all? I need to take a day off from work to catch up. I used to work full time and take 2 classes and that was plenty. Really the part time Law School is 3/4 time. Not really part time. So is Full time just taking 2 more classes in the average school day?

Hell yes! It'll be tough, no question, but definitely doable. I actually run a free FB for law students and prelaw students, and there are quite a few nontraditional law students in the group who are coming to law school with a family and as a second career. Good question! I can't imagine why evening programs wouldn't offer scholarships, but I would definitely ask the admissions department of the law schools you're thinking about applying to (or reach out to current evening law students attending those law schools to ask them).

Hi Patrick! From my conversations with evening students the answer is usually no -- you'll generally have class 3-4 nights a week (in the timeframe of 6pm-10pm or somewhere around there). Ooh good question, I'm not sure! It will be interesting to see if law schools start opening that up as a possibility going forward. My guess is that it won't be an option they provide right away, but perhaps over time they'll start opening it up!

Hi! Good question, most of the part-time law school programs I've seen are in the evenings, but I do think there are some law schools that offer part-time day programs as well. It will vary law school to law school, but definitely reach out to the admissions department to see if that's an option for the law schools you're interested in. And yes, you can definitely still participate in the law school extracurriculars and organizations as a part-time law student :)

Hello Angela, I hope I can ask you 2 questions. I finished highschool this year. Not with great grades , just enough. My younger self never put the effort in to be the best. Do you think that people, like potential firms, will look back to my highschool career? Also.. My first year of law will start. I am from the Netherlands. People in the US say the first year is quite important, because of possible offers from law firms if you are good enough. But how does that work? I don't know enough law firms. Do universities send our grades to them? Are we supposed to apply to them? How can I gain experience? I hope my questions aren't too complicated. Thanks , in advance.

Hi! With respect to your high school grades, definitely not. Law firms will look only at your law school grades, they won't ask for your high school or college transcripts. Your college GPA is an important metric for law school admissions, but your LSAT score is by far the most important metric. In the U.S. the main law firm hiring process happens at the beginning of your second year. @@timo9849 Oh gosh the truth is I have no idea what standardized test (if any) European law schools require. I do know that the LSAT is offered outside of the U.S. if you're looking to apply to a U.S. law school, but I'm not familiar with the process if you're looking to practice law outside of the U.S.

Hi Jennifer! A master's may give you a bit of a bump, particularly if you can tie that master's to your narrative of how it impacted your decision to pursue a career in the law. That being said, since your LSAT score is by far the dominant metric, I wouldn't get a master's just to strengthen your law school application. That would be a very lengthy and expensive route. But if you're between law school and another career path, a master's may help you decide, but work experience arguably would be even better :)
