I agree, if there is any reasonable doubt and you no longer have that big 1 liner acting as the buildings support beam, beyond reasonable doubt, the building collapses. If you did it, but someone finds reasonable doubt and re-opens the case, you have as much right to be released as someone who IS innocent. For example, he was innocent of killing that woman. He was put away because a cop made a mistake and he was walking free from the crime of murdering someone else, so the cop framed him. True he did murder someone, but that particular case would entail different sentencing anyway, and the real murderer for this case was walking free as long as Grimm was in jail for it.

It's no surprise he became such a good drug kingpin in New Mexico years later after retiring from all this mess. Dude's sharp and knows his stuff.
This is another one of those episodes that really bothered me. This is basically garbage agitprop against The Innocence Project. The thing that makes it tragic is the NYPD has literally lost entire warehouses full of evidence in order to keep them from going through old suspect cases. I never really noticed it while watching this show all those years ago, but there was so much just garbage politics in it. It's got a very specific NYC centric idea on the way things were, yet they never actually were in reality. SVU is the same way. Criminal Intent was different because it was high theater and meant to be more psychology centered rather than procedural.

I mean, they did say that "if the knife had gone back to the police lab, it would have been destroyed after he was proved guilty" so it's not like they hid the fact they lose stuff.
