A woman is treated as liability of her husband or (if unmarried) her father by courts. A boy (child) is to be maintained until he is 18, while a girl child till she is married. An adulterous woman is granted maintenance saying she is not living in adultery by courts but if a man is adulterous he can face jail term under 498A cruelty. A woman gets custody of the child by default unless she denies it. And some women use the child to earn more maintenance (because courts become more generous when it comes to child). Working woman can do job and keep the child with her maternal family or in child-care. But the court assumes a man cannot do that. Again, court denies DNA tests for children and a child born out of adultery still is a liability of her husband. Recently SC awarded something like 2Cr to woman and her child who had earned 40 Lacs from her previous divorce, had a child from previous marriage and stayed with the man for just few days.

@@pvn7499 The divorce is fault based. So she would be a liability via interim till he gets a divorce and via alimony (or Crpc 125) after the divorce is granted. So unless he pays some decently huge sum to her, that she agrees to, he is screwed for life. He cannot live-in with some other woman because now courts award interim to a live-in woman as well via DV (2019 judgement of SC). Also, there is a chance of BNS69 case with 12 year imprisonment, if he backs out from the live-in.

If a man has 10 crores, the wife gets 5 crores. Only then, he won't divorce. If you give her 50 lakhs, he will divorce 50 times. The logic is not about how much she needs, the logic is about how much a man is ready to loose for a divorce. Because it's usually the man who is attracted to many women. A great example set by high court Judge of Karnataka. If dowry is a punishable offence then why do husband have to share their half of wealth with wife after divorce. For personal expenses 20 to 30 thousand is more than sufficient for living a decent life.
