By participating with his unending circular arguments, she encouraged it. Judge Dorow should have stood up to Brooks Day one of the trial. Instead, she wrung her hands in fear of a mistrial and allowed the circus to continue. A Male Judge would have put a stop to Brook's disrespect and antics Day one! Kinda depends on how you look at it. Letting him defend himself was an absolute nightmare for the judge, prosecutors, the victims and their families and anyone else in the courtroom with him. Thing is, as much of a nightmare as it was, it was a temporary nightmare. He could only stall and drag things out for so long. Eventually, the trial and (once he was found guilty) sentencing would commence. At that point, it became a blessing that he defended himself. At the time, I think I remember reading or hearing an attorney say that an actual lawyer probably could have kept him from getting convicted on some of the charges, including the more serious ones. He was never going to be completely acquitted and honestly, was always gonna have to serve a long time. But it's not inconceivable that with even a barely competent actual lawyer, he would have gotten a sentence that would have eventually let him go free. The way the trial actually unfolded showed what a narcissistic sociopath he is. It took away any benefit of the doubt that an actual lawyer might have been able to present and with that, he got sentenced to so many years that even the judge acknowledged that some of the sentencing was symbolic.

People were wondering why the judge was allowing him to misbehave. It was because she knew what he was trying to do, he wanted to get under her skin for her to react so there would be mistrial or at the very least he would delay the case, especially by getting contempt of court. Instead she was a rock and he grew increasingly frustrated when his life long tactics and immature attempts at intimidation and disrespect failed to delay matters as she only ever replied curtly with the minimal responses required under law. He instead only dug himself deeper and once he had done so sufficiently, she stuck him in a box with a mic and camera, muting him during rants. Now he's recieved multiple life sentences.
