Not to mention the fact that she obviously knew her son was mentally disturbed but they still thought buying a firearm primarily for their disturbed child’s use was totally fine. SMH

*TRUE STORY* Yes PARENTS need to pay attention! I was married to a wealthy man who had custody of his teenage son "B" who'd done small things that led to bigger things then a SWAT team raid! Every time this kid got into trouble my ex never listened. After many incidents B got mad and killed my little dog. I'd had him for 11 years. I was heartbroken. What did my soon to be ex-husband say? "I didn't SEE HIM do it!" About not quite 3 years later, I was watching the news "SWAT shoots man during raid!" I was staring at the house...oh my God! I saw the drapes I'd put up. That was my ex's house! Then the phone rang! It was my ex who said "Don't watch the news" I said "I'm staring at the house right now who was shot was it B?" No it was my ex, he was drunk and pulled a gun on SWAT just a wound. Then he said "You know you were right about B! I was so angry I screamed "It's TOO LATE!" Why SWAT? In a nice upper-class neighborhood? B had started having a lot of parties, all the time, wasn't going to school and my ex just said to him clean his room. He was selling DRUGS! and one young man DIED from something he bought from B so his friend told police. When the police went through the house they found cocaine, marijuana, something B was making, needles, equipment, numerous guns and B was driving a $40,000 car! Not working not going to school. And my ex "knew nothing" the same excuse when he killed my dog "I didn't SEE HIM do it!" There's no way there was so much that happened, truth is he didn't care, no interest in his son. Just like Ethan said about his parents. I was so angry about this kid, he had lots of potential he just needed help. He never felt bad about anything wrong that he did, he was never told NO! He wasn't punished when he killed my dog and when I packed to leave he cried and cried and didn't understand why! I reaized I was the only "parent" he'd known. So I told him he shouldn't have done what he did to Max my little dog and he turned to his father and said "Fix it! make her stay!" Fix it. That was what he knew. I moved to another state and years later read about the case online. Still fighting in the courts, my ex's net worth was about 10% of what it was because he got a lot of charges as well! Lots of lawyers lots of money. I've never had children of my own but I know they need attention and guidance. What's wrong with parents these days? Spend some time with them, find out what's happening stop being so selfish, this is a child you made and yes parents should be held accountable until they're 18 yrs old! Maybe, hopefully this case wil make parents pay attention to their kids instead of ignoring them..

I'm glad parents are being held responsible for their kids' actions, especially in a egregous situation like this when a gun is the answer for a kid not feeling well.
@phoenixmerridian91197 ай бұрын
yea people comparing this to opening a gateway to like, kids sending nudes on cell phones and getting the parents charged are deranged. Its not a slippery slope, this was never level criminally negleftful behavior by the parent. People are terrified at the idea that they might be held accountable actually for letting their kids be raised by social media and knowing a gun that they have bought FOR THE KID was not even locked. On top of that laughing and dismissing every cry for help... Time to be held accountable for the situation they fed and fostered. Otherwise, how will we get parents to take gun ownership more seriously, so that they and their offspring respect the responsibility of owning a firearm. Toddlers need't shoot themselves but it keeps happening because the penalties are no severe enough.

It actually bothers me that this kid is going to do more time than his parents will. He was literally begging for help. He did not want to want to hurt anyone. He didn't want to be feeling the way that he did and he knew enough to know that he needed some major help and yet no one did anything. They are more responsible than he is, in my opinion
@SRR02477 ай бұрын
Agree. He had foresight and enough self-awareness to understand what he was feeling and wanting to do was wrong and would result in going to prison, and that he needed help. His journal in essence is his witness and shows he wanted and sought help from his PARENTS and they FAILED HIM. That in of itself should've got him 25 years at a mental facility (instead of life in prison).
