A mother and father in Scioto County, Ohio stand trial in the death of their infant son. Young Dylan Groves was found dead 30 feet down a well last year, prosecutors said. Authorities blame the boy’s parents-mother Jessica Groves, and father Daniel Groves-for what happened. The defendants are charged with aggravated murder, murder, kidnapping, endangering children, tampering with evidence, interference with custody, gross abuse of a corpse, and four counts of felonious assault.
Problems stemmed right from Dylan’s day of birth on January 10, 2019. The boy was born with drugs in his system, authorities claim. Daniel Groves later got the child back after showing that he followed regulations, but the defendant allegedly started missing important dates, including court dates and doctor’s appointments.
Investigators claim that both defendants bolted on a four-wheeler when authorities dropped by the home for a checkup on May 20, according to WLTW. Deputies obtained a search warrant, got Jessica Groves to give herself up quickly, but Daniel Groves was only arrested after a six-hour standoff. Authorities said they found $42,000 of stolen items at the residence, and later found the late infant in a well.
Deputies said Dylan Groves didn’t even make it to a full three months of age. They claim there’s evidence showing he’d been dead since March.
A coroner determined that the victim had been slain. The child sustained several bone fractures, had been wrapped in plastic bags with duct tape, then put in milk crates that were wrapped in chains, and other bindings, according to WSAZ. The creates were weighted down with rocks and a weight, authorities said. As in his birth, Groves died with drugs in his body, according to the coroner. This allegedly included methamphetamine.

I agree, and I’m not even half way through this! I’ve been a labor and delivery nurse since 93’. So far I can’t understand how they ( CPS, hospital) let this baby go home with these “parents”. We’ve reported incidents way less troublesome than this nightmare and the baby is kept in the nursery till a plan is devised for a safe home. I’m sure I will have more to say as finish this sad story.

Totally agree!!! This is just so heart breaking, the torment that was forced upon this baby who couldn't defend himself, Both the DCSS and DFACS systems are allowing these children back into the abuse and it's so wrong!!!! There are laws to protect these children, however, you have to follow them, in order to, enforce them. In most cases, that's the problem!!! The entire government entity needs to be revamped with tighter reigns and holding these agencies accountable, and if memory serves me right, these CPS agencies are mandated reporters, in that, if they suspect abuse and do nothing they are liable and face criminal charges.

They didnt verify anything. She takes "statements" as facts. Things they said they were planning as "events" any child placed in that home should have been checked on numerous times. A transition to unfounded claims. That's the thing, once they baby leaves the hospital and a doctor cannot see any injuries, it's downhill. A photo of the child should have been taken in the crib in the home that was also checked. None of these events happened. CYS has a mission and laws they are sworn to uphold. When will we start holding these agencies responsible?? From the overworked caseworker the whole way up to the case managers to Supervisors... ALL OF THEM are guilty just as much as these pieces of garbage. I hope Daniel jr. Gets some help (yet another thing the tax payers will have to provide) why not put these monsters in a hole and give all the money it take to provide housing in prison given to the victims... Daniel Jr, the foster parent compensation for missed work, stress and every item she purchased for the child she should have never lost.

Yes...exactly! Though both of those parents are total scumbags, CPS needed to be held accountable for the death of that child as well. Most would be surprised regarding the "credentials" of CPS workers. I worked as a paralegal for an attorney that represented parents and acted as guardian ad litem for children within the CPS system and I can tell you honestly and with certainty that most of the CPS officials I communicated with were much like this woman testifying...some were better, most were worse. Very few even had degrees in social work and any other related field. In my state, many were hired solely on the basis of passing a state civil service test. Most high school students can pass that test. So much incompetence and total apathy for this precious child. SAD...and in my opinion, criminal!

I don't buy for a minute that Daniel Groves didn't know what was going on. The fact that he didn't respond to CPS's attempts to contact him, didn't answer the door, etc., speaks volumes. He knew what was going on. He may not have been the one physically abusing the child, but he was a witness to it and did nothing. He is as guilty as she is, no matter what his excuses are. And I fully believe he is a drug addict as well. As far as CPS is concerned, they were grossly negligent in their handling of this matter. Given the nature and severity of the addiction, and that the baby was born addicted, the FIRST time they were not able to get in touch with Daniel Groves, they should have gotten a court order and went to the trailer with the police and removed the baby immediately. These people are a joke.

I'm shocked and so sad - there was no mention of procedure when there were multiple no shows/no contact. Agree in these circumstances the CPS should have contacted police to bring some order into the whole thing. I Here in U.K. there would have been major action, intense scrutiny and escalation of the parents' dodging the visits before they could have said 'pass the spliff'!!!! Yet it seems to be common in US to see every bickering neighbour or couple or Karen calling the police and hey presto a couple of gigantic cop cars appear with overweight dunk in' donut cops spending way too long sorting out a civil over-egged drama! So many questions for the US re this imbalance and not nearly enough time ☹️ 🙈

Something I think many people are not aware of... Baby bones are not easily broken. Its actually very hard to break because the bones are not fully hardend yet. This is true. When I had my daughter and she was only 4lbs 7oz I was being so careful with her. The nurse said she wouldn't break and told me this exact statement. Why on earth is Children's Services doing urine drug screens where the client cannot be watched? Why not a saliva test? Client can remain in sight of the worker the entire time.

I’ve never heard of a saliva drug test. Not all drugs can be detected through saliva, I don’t think. I’m a recovering addict (over 5 years clean now) and I was on methadone for years to slowly come off the opioids with minimal withdrawal symptoms. This means frequent urine tests- weekly at the very least. The bathrooms in the clinic are wired with multiple cameras and patients are watched carefully to prevent tampering. Way back when I first went on the program, the women’s bathroom wasn’t yet renovated and wired with cameras-so there was a female staff member who supervised the female patients during their urine samples. However, this is a voluntary program that patients have agreed to... I don’t know that CPS can force that on people under threat of tearing their family apart (remember that 99.9% of cases DO NOT end in horrific tragedies like this one).

@@jillronan6786 I'm 99% sure saliva tests test for the same drugs as urine tests, I think they are more expensive though. I was also on a methadone programme and I started with urine samples but they moved to saliva tests. It's possible to fake a saliva test aswell.

I found this about a saliva test. cocaine, heroin, amphetamines and ecstasy can be detected by this test over a period of 24 to 48 hours after the last use. This time may vary according to each person's metabolism, as well as the quantity and quality of the drug that was consumed.

Even w/ staff in room you can use somebody's pee. Women put small bottle inside w/ foil they just pop w/ nail...men use a tube attached to bag that's taped to stomach. My 2nd clinic did saliva swabs which is done right in front of staff but I've heard they're not reliable but idk. I have never understood giving notice of when you are going to show up, whether it's to a child visitation like this or to let a restaurant know when you are showing up to inspect them. Of course you aren't going to catch them doing wrong, they have time to "fix" whatever the issue is beforehand.

I’ve never seen a defense lawyer throw their own client under bus to help a co-defendant represented by a different lawyer. But their hope to get Daniel Groves off appears to be a fools errand.
