In this video, I review Spectracide Weed Stop For Lawns. I talk about the Spectracide Weed Stop For Lawns Plus Crabgrass Preventer and the Spectracide Weed Stop For Lawns Plus Crabgrass Killer. These two products are used to control weeds in the lawn. I use one as a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent weeds and the other as a post-emergent herbicide to kill weeds. You must apply them to your lawn correctly to see good results. I'll give you tips on how to do that while still following the label instructions.
You need to watch this video if you want to get rid of the weeds in your lawn. Also, check out the links below for other videos about these products and my weed control success as part of my lawn care plan.

Budget Lawns as on the label they are saying for best results spray when temp is 45 and in your video you are saying apply when it’s really hot ? Please advice
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on your grass type. I have a warm season grass and can spray when hotter. If you have a cool season grass it likely needs to follow the label. It may take more than one application. I did 2.

I have St Augustine grass... the orange cap weed stop liquid says no for St. Augustine grass.... the yellow cap weed stop says no to bitter blue variety of St. Augustine grass.. I'm having a hard time figuring out ID exactly what I got, it's warm season southern St Augustine with some grass other mixed in.. label also says not to apply when air temps are 85 degrees and above or risk damage to the grass turf..... so for July-Sept in E. Tx it's a no-go anyway even if it was for my grass.... according to the instructions this is a spring and fall application product.... I follow the instructions.....

Great information. I have Bermuda. My method is hitting the yard once my daily low temps are around 50 degrees with a per-emergent (granular). That creates a good barrier when watered in. Once my yard is about 70-80% out of dormancy, I mow the lawn on day one, the next day (day two) I hit with the Spectracide through a hose-end sprayer and lastly, the third day I spot spray POA with Image. I literally don't get weeds.

Awesome video and thanks. Question I have is I’m 21 days into my newly laid elite fescue sod. Before the sod I had bad weeds and crabgrass throughout. My contractor did a good job spraying until the crabgrass and weeds were dead. He tilled the dirt afterwards and prepped for sod install. Given the heavy watering during the first few weeks after installing the sod, the crabgrass weeds started to come through the sod. I’m freaking out because we’re towards the end of summer and I’m nervous that any pre or post emergent may damage the sod since it has only been less than a month since the install. I also don’t want the weeds to overtake my new sod. Any recommendations on how I should approach the situation would be greatly appreciated.

I inherited a fairly nice lawn with the house I recently bought in Missouri in the winter, but it definitely has a weed problem. I'm planning to use one or both of these Spectracide products in early May and probably a second application a few weeks later. My question is, should I use the "preventer" (pre-emergent) first and then the "killer" (post emergent) a few weeks later or should I use the "killer" first and then the "preventer" a few weeks later? Or would you recommend a couple of applications of the "killer" first in May and then do an application of the "preventer" some time in the summer?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 2 жыл бұрын
Good questions. It gets a little confusing because the pre-emergent granular is also a post emergent. It has the ingredients for both. However, I don't apply it the way it's supposed to be for post emergent results. I only use it for the pre-emergent side. I would use the post emergent. Then, if needed, make a second application 2 weeks later. I'd give it another couple weeks after that to let the lawn recover a bit before applying the pre-emergent. You could even wait until fall to apply it. All 3 applications in such a short period is really a lot for the lawn. Hope this helps and answers your questions. Appreciate ya!

Thanks for the video. I've got an acre and a half in the country that I mow in Southern Ohio (aka rain forest), surrounded by woods and crop fields. I missed my pre-emergent. I used this as the bottle said and it only discolored my grass. Didn't touch the crabgrass. I'll step it up this time and follow your suggestions. I use a 30gal tank sprayer. If I use a surfactant do you think it would work in about 16 hours before a rain? They are giving rain on and off for another week or so.
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns Жыл бұрын
That should be enough time to dry. If the crabgrass is mature, it is very hard to kill it with this stuff. You have to catch it early as it’s coming up. Thanks for watching.

I put down new bermuda sod, and had yellow nutsedge grow in like crazy. I used the hose end spray just how you recommended and it completely killed the nutsedge perfectly. However is turned the area I sprayed a bit brown...does that eventually go away??
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns Жыл бұрын
It can turn bermuda brown and will usually go away. I don't like to spray new sod in the first year, especially if it's not rooted really well. You should be fine but just keep an eye on it if it's brand new. Regardless, it'll be ok in the long run. Thanks for watching.

Hi, thanks for this thorough video! I just broadcast sprayed my yard with the Weed Stop for Lawns + Crabgrass Killer. Mowed about a week ago, sprayed on my hot, dry lawn. My question to you is how often should I be doing this post-emergent? Is it once a season? Every month until the weeds die? The bottle doesn't have clear instructions, only that you shouldn't exceed .57 lbs per year, which isn't helpful, HA! Thanks in advance!
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. Good question. My rule of thumb is only 2 broadcast treatments a season. The second one 2 weeks after the first if there are still a lot of weeds on the lawn. After that, you can just spot spray the bad areas if there are any left. In my experience, I've never needed to do more than 2, because I've always had such good results with this. I hope this helps ya a little more. Thanks so much for watching. I appreciate ya!

I am dealing with a pretty significant chickweed infestation. I did an over-seed and starter fertilizer at the end of March as I am really trying to build my lawn up as I deal with plenty of weeds and thinning. If I put down the weed killer, how long should I wait before doing this so as not to kill the developing grass? Similarly, I had planned on putting down fertilizer around Memorial day. If I put the weed killer down, should I wait to fertilize? I am up in Indiana, and have been putting down Midwest Best ryegrass blend.
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 4 жыл бұрын
Great question. I would wait at least a few months or until you've mowed it several times and are mowing regularly. Definitely don't want to stress out the new grass coming in. As far as fertilizing and weed killing...I did my spraying the same day I put out Milo. But Milo is organic and doesn't have to be watered in. So if you're not going organic with the fert, you probably don't want to do both on the same day, cause you'll have to water the synthetic in. You don't want to get the weed killer wet. If you want to do the weeds first, just wait until you've let the killer work for a 8-10 days before you fert.

Hey again! So another question. How does this product do with newer sod? I know from a previous video I watched of yours you said don’t apply weed killer until about the 9th week of it growing, which I will wait until. I do see a lot of crap grass trying to come in and I have been trying to keep up with pulling them by hand but it’s growing faster and faster. I think overall the lawn looks great for it being band new(7weeks) but it seems like the weeds are wanting to try and come more and more. Will this product be good doing the hose and spray at my 9th week or should I just do spot treatment at 9th week?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 2 жыл бұрын
My preference is to not apply anything in the first year, although you can as mentioned. I wouldn't do it any sooner than what I lined out in that other video. Weeds, unfortunately, are just part of it. What people online don't tell you is how they went through all that too. All you see is the manicured turf they've worked years to get. Don't sweat it and enjoy the ride. Hope this helps. Thanks as always!

Years ago there were very few options for homeowners, had to be licensed to get the most effective chemicals. I remember when Drive (Quinclorac) came out, it was the best thing since sliced bread. I live in Oregon, just outside of Portland so I’m not completely sure what kind of grass i have. Cool temp and a mix. I bought this product and as of now the lawn has a lot of clover and these large flat round weeds. I don’t think they are dandelion..... Anyways, we bought the house in 2019 and I’ve been totally overwhelmed with how to deal with the grass. I don’t know what to do and what to use and when. Do I kill the weeds then seed? Or seed and let the new grass choke out the weeds? The clover is creeping.
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 3 жыл бұрын
This product worked great on the clover for me. I go through timing of application in this video. As far as seeding goes. I'd prolly go ahead and kill weeds before seeding. You want to open things up to more sun and air to allow for more seeding success. I hope this helps a little. Don't stress it. Just enjoy the process. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

I had sod laid in Arkansas in October 2020. We watered before it went dormant. Now we have tons of weeds. Is it OK to use this being my sod is only 5 months old?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I'm in northwest Arkansas. Always great to see a fellow Arkansan on here. That's a tough call. Depends on who you ask. I play it a little more conservative on how early I use herbicides. I'm more concerned about the sod establishing and getting strong for the long haul as opposed to some unsightly weeds. Since you got it down in Oct., it didn't have much time to come in and establish before the dormant winter. So you're kinda starting from new now. It would really just depend on how well rooted it is. See if you can pull it up easily or not. If it were me, I'd just do my best to ignore the weeds and wait until the second half of the season (or even next year) before I sprayed any weed killers on such new sod. Good news is, the weeds you see now are cool season weeds and will be gone when it gets hot out. With that said, other folks would say to blast them now if you want. It's really what you feel comfortable with. Hope this help. Sorry it's not a definitive answer. Thanks for watching.

Thank you. You'll be much warmer before me in Spring. Here, I wouldn't weed kill or fertilize until sometime in May when It warms up into the 80s steadily. So whenever that would be for you and when your grass is about 75% greened up if it went dormant. I would not overseed bermuda at all. It will spread on its own for you. Hope this helps. Thanks again.

Thanks for the great job. So how careful do I have to be as far as overspray onto foliage.? Are there some things that are ok to spray or is this grass only?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. You wanna be as careful as possible. Too much overspray could kill plants that you don’t want to kill. You wanna keep it on the grass only. It is designed to not harm the grass and only target other plants. I use a cardboard box as a shield when I spray around my beds. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and the question. Appreciate ya.

I'm in Arkansas and it's HOT. I like to do it when it's hot, but it has been a little too hot for me. I would wait until you get a day with highs in the 80s and try to do it in the evening as the temperature is dropping, so it won't be stressed out too bad overnight. It will discolor the turf pretty good if it's too hot out. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and the question.

Great video. I am a southern transplant with a new Bermuda lawn, so I am really like the videos. I was not able to put down a pre-emergent this spring, since they just sodded in Jan. However, I want to try to stop as much crab grass as I can for the summer (my lawn is already filled with POA). Being a little more south than you, do you think beginning of May would be a good time to catch baby crab-grass with the spray weed-stop?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I appreciate that. Welcome to the south. You'll love it here! You got the right idea. Catching it early is key...early May was my time frame the last two years. I would definitely do that. From experience, I can just be honest and tell you, crabgrass is a whole other animal...so stubborn. The post emergent will help, but my best advice is to just be a hawk on it and hand pick it as you see it coming up to control it. That's how I got rid of the majority of it by the bucket full. I didn't treat my lawn 3 years ago when I built the house with anything for the first season. It was a mess year two, but I just wanted to keep it all organic the first year to let it do its thing. Not saying to do that, just some motivation to know that if it gets outta control this year, it will be okay! We'll knock it out! Thanks for watching. Looking forward to going through the season with ya!

Going to give this a try this year. When you say you go heavier then the bag rate what rate are you putting down?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 3 жыл бұрын
I'd always recommend the bag rate for beginners, but if you've got experience, I just play around with the rate till I find what works best. I use 2 bags on 4K sqft. They're labeled for 3K ft a bag, so I'm a bit over, but it works great. I don't know what that officially equates to rate wise. I don't really measure anything. I just roll with it. Thanks for the question and watching.

Do we really need to mow before the post-emergent treatment if all other requirements (hot, no rain for 48 hrs) are met? So long as we have enough leaf area for the killer to act on? It is almost May now and the temps are inching up in to mid-eighties in NC. Any reason why I shouldn’t be treating now instead of mowing and waiting a bit more etc?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 2 жыл бұрын
If your temps are already that warm, I'd say you're good to go. Waiting is just dependent on location and current weather trends. We're only in the 60s and low 70s here in Arkansas, so it's too early for me. I prefer not to mow for at least 2-3 days before treating. The lawn won't look great for a bit, but I want as much leaf blade as possible. Hope this answers your questions. Appreciate ya!

Our lawn has always been the worst weed nightmare imaginable since moving here. We have the preventer, but not the post application? Can I use what I have in the same way you would use the post weed stop by spectricide?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 4 жыл бұрын
The Spectracide preventer also has post-emergent qualities. I just don't think granular works as good at killing weeds, but I would definitely give it a shot. Just make sure to follow the bag instructions. Applying it as a post emergent is different than I do as a pre emergent. You want the grass and weeds to be a little wet either from dew or watering. Thanks for the question. Best of luck in the lawn to ya. Let me know if there's any other way I can help!

@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 4 жыл бұрын
Crabgrass is by far the hardest to kill. Especially if it's mature. If you spray it when it's just popping up, it's way easier to kill off. You should wait 2 weeks between applications. Crabgrass usually takes more than one app. Even still that might not do the trick if it's well established. Best thing for crabgrass is a pre-emergent to prevent it. With the pre-em in the video, I have seen no crabgrass in my lawn this season. Stuff works. Thanks for watching!

Once it's dry, it's safe for pets according to the label. I keep my dog off for at least 24 hours though. If your dogs eat grass, that might be a different story.
