I realize this video was from 7 years ago but I wanted to say thank you still as it helped me out in my research today. We just got a small 1.25 acre homestead and were looking at options that weren't as tiring as moving gravel with shovel and wheelbarrow all day. I was curious about one of these as we recently picked up a tractor mower. You showed the operation and how the handles worked and that was what I was curious about. Thank you sir! This video was very helpful.

My neighbor has one of those scoops, in order to keep the bucket from dragging when carrying a heavy load, he welded an axle stub on both sides of the bucket frame bracket and put a steel caster wheel on the axles, still has ground clearance, but keeps the bucket from digging or bottoming out on uneven terrain and binding or bending the brackets and mounting hardware. Thanks for sharing!

You might have done it already and I missed it, but you should take the front wheel bushings out and replace with ball bearings. Some have plastic bushings and some are metal but putting the extra weight on front end will wear those out then it tears up your rims. I’m working on 1 for mine that would work great. Don’t have room in the yard for a big tractor. Thanks for the review
@chevymanngmail3 жыл бұрын
The craftsman's I've worked on all have the metal bushings, only known plastic bushings are in the mtd lawn tractor's. But I'll agree, trash the bushings and put in the bearing's! I've done that on my simplicity's , craftsman and the blackmax I bought and fixed that I gave my brother to use to push snow with.

@chevymanngmail3 жыл бұрын
Its not really ment for a lawn tractor as it is a garden tractor which would have the bit more height in front. I have 1 of these and the main issue with dumping it is the thing doesn't put enough leverage to the side opposite of the dump arm and if you get a good load in it you can't dump it if more weight is on the 1 side, it is almost as it get's into a bind or something and won't dump it.

Last year I bought of these for my Craftsman pro-series gt. It was actually the Agri-Fab one that they had online on clearance, so I thought I was winning big getting it for $270 as opposed to whatever Sears used to charge for it (they don't sell them anymore, but I think it was something like $450 when they did). Well, joke on me, the mounts didn't fit at all...it was built for a Husky tractor. So I fabbed it a bit to mount on my Craftsman, using the snow plow/dozer blade mounts I have mounted on the tractor. Anyways, after all that, I used it once, and surmised I really need a real tractor with a bucket. So now I have MF GC1710! Anybody wanna buy a once-used front scoop for cheap, lol?!!

Love the tractor and engine is strong, only issue is rear axle is slooowww you literally move it forward or reverse 3/4 the way before it moves but has all kinds of forward power. If I can't find a replacement axle same as it takes then I'm switching it out to gear drive as I want to be able to use it for pretty much anything and not just mowing. Seen in my profile photo is my approx 03 gt5000 I got on the cheap few yrs ago and been upgrading it making it more useful. Already used it to tear down a camper back in spring.

How do you feel about this now that you DO have a Johnny Bucket? I bought a GT6000 specifically because of your videos, but I don’t have an electric sleeve hitch actuator YET and don’t have a front scoop at all, so I am trying to decide what upgrades to go with. I do have a plow, disc harrow, scrape blade, and cultivator, trailer, yard sweeper, as well as the mower deck, and so far have only been successful with the last 3. The plow works, but I’m not experienced enough to actually start a garden yet, and everything else doesn’t get enough down pressure to work.
@FarpointFarms Жыл бұрын
I would get the rear electric sleeve hitch, as it will serve you VERY well with the equipment you have already. As for the electric vs. scoop? Well the old scoop was faster, but this johhny bucket is nice on the arms when doing a large amount of gravel or mulch.

I wouldn't use it on anything with 20inch rear tires or smaller. The frame's are not heavy enough to do alot with on most. If planning on moving anything more then a few shovels of dirt or mulch, you will need a garden tractor like in the above video. Not specifically a craftsman but just about any will due. I used mine on a 03 mtd garden tractor. I do suggest weights or liquid fill your rear tires for tractor to offset the weight your moving and also don't expect to be able to turn till you start moving if have amount of weight in the bucket.

I've used this thing id say 50/50 with the first 50 on a stock lt1000 It had no ag tires and no chains, and no weight. I still managed to move 40 yards of mulch and 16 yards of gravel. Now its got the setup you see in this video, and I haven't really seen that much of a change in overall usability. Its a little more stable going up hills with a load in the bucket, but it works much the same. So I guess I'd say there is not enough of a change to warrant the tires and weights unless you need them for gardening or snow plowing as well.

When you have a full bucket, does the right lever become heavy to pull down or does it have some system
@FarpointFarms7 жыл бұрын
It has a total load capacity of about 200 pounds per bucket load. With the leverage that the unit has I would guess that even fully loaded it is no more than maybe 10-15 pounds of force to operate it. Let me put it this way. I moved 16 tons of gravel in less than 6 hours, and I was tired, but not worn out, and nowhere near as exhausted as I would have been if I had tried to shovel it into wheel barrel loads.

How big is the engine?

21hp 2 cylinder gas engine.

They made a 21hp version in 94?! That’s awesome. I have a craftsman gt6000 and it’s got the Briggs twin cylinder 18hp.

Can this be used on any mower?
@FarpointFarms2 жыл бұрын
I would make sure that the engine is big enough to handle the extra work Maybe hp or larger. I would also out it on a bigger model to make sure the frame was strong enough for the weight of it( and what you are loading in it)

I would love to have one of these for my little tractor that's forty-six in. It's a yard machine but in good shape. Is it possible to buy one or does it have to be homemade please?
@chevymanngmail3 жыл бұрын
These will fit mtd made tractor's just need to add few washers to back frame mount behind the axle to go between frame and bucket mount. But only recommend using on a garden tractor not lawn tractor with the smaller tires. Mine was mounted on a 03 yardmanchine garden tractor. Used it to level our yard when put the lines in the ground to drain off the gutters from the house out into the north end of our yard.

Kind of bullsh.. You have GT and all GTs have larger front wheels 8" that makes tractor taller from the ground. And the ones that have usually issues are equipped with smaller 6" wheels. So yes it works on GT and yes you will have clearance issues on models with smaller wheels.

I am lucky enough to have saved up the 25k for a "Real Tractor", but the fact is not everyone can. These are real enough that they got my farm going and served me very well for years and years. I still own a Garden Tractor and use it far more often for projects than my "Real Tractor". A decked out GT with all the toys is 5K Max. My 12 year old Kubota BX25D with no added toys came in just under 20K. To add a mowing deck, and a rear tiller made it 25K. Just not worth it for many home owners that have small farms. This will do about 90% of what the Kobota will. No backhoe, but short of that they are both very capable critters. Paid $40 for the 1994 Craftsman GT in this video and it's still going 6 years later.
