If you want the darkest grass possible, you need this grass seed. In this video, we'll take you through the entire process of overseeding your lawn with the very dark Fireball and Hatrick blend. With these expert tips, your lawn will soon be the envy of the neighborhood.
Intro 0:00
How I found it 0:28
Where it was Created 1:14
When to seed? 3:36
Step 1: Scalp 4:15
Step 2: Dethatch 4:55
Step 3: Put Seed Down 6:12
Step 4: Rake 7:08
Step 5: Roll it in 7:39
Step 6: Cover 8:22
Step 7: Water 8:57
Results 10:19
Timing is Key : To kick things off, let's talk timing. The best time to overseed your lawn with perennial ryegrass depends on your location. For cooler climates, aim for late August to early September, allowing the new grass to establish before winter. In warmer regions, where ryegrass acts as a winter substitute, overseeding is typically done in October to early November to maintain that lush green appearance during the cooler months.
Step 1: Scalping Your Lawn: The first step is to scalp your lawn, cutting it as low as possible without causing damage. Don't be alarmed if your grass looks a bit rough after this - it's a crucial part of the process. By reducing the grass canopy, you create an optimal environment for your new seeds, ensuring they reach the soil layer and receive sunlight.
Step 2: Dethatching or Scarifying: Now, it's time to dethatch or scarify your lawn to remove dead debris between the grass and the soil. This step is vital for achieving proper seed-to-soil contact, a key factor in successful overseeding. Seed won't germinate without it.
Step 3: Spreading the Seed: The next question is how much seed to use. While the general recommendation is 6-8 lbs per thousand square feet for perennial ryegrass, I overseeded 10 lbs per thousand sq ft. Why the extra seed? Well, if your lawn is already thick with established grass, a heavier seeding rate ensures that the new grass can compete and thrive.
Step 4: Raking In the Seed: Don't skip this step! Raking the seed into the soil helps it settle into the grooves created during dethatching. This is essential for that crucial seed-to-soil contact.
Step 5: Rolling the Seed In: One of the most critical yet often overlooked steps is rolling the seed into the ground. Properly rolling your lawn helps achieve that essential contact, ensuring your new grass gets off to a great start. Rent a lawn roller or use your lawn tractor's weight to get the job done.
Step 6: No Need for a Cover: Contrary to conventional advice, we recommend skipping the use of peat moss or straw as a cover for your seed. If you've followed the previous steps, your existing grass should provide adequate coverage for germination.
Step 7: Proper Watering: Watering is the key to germination. Keep the seed consistently moist, without drowning it. Water 4 times a day for 5-7 minutes each time, adjusting to your irrigation system's specifications. Proper watering is vital for successful overseeding.
Adding Starter Fertilizer: After germination, consider adding a starter fertilizer, especially if your soil is low in phosphorus. Follow the label instructions for application. Apply it after the first mow to avoid choking out the new grass with rapid growth.
Within 5-7 days, you'll see germination, and in about 30 days, you should start to notice some remarkable color coming in.
Thank you for watching! Get ready to enjoy the darkest, most vibrant lawn you've ever had. Don't forget to subscribe for more lawn care tips and tricks. Your lawn will thank you for it!

Yup. When I did my reno last fall I had to start late because of the late summer, Timed it as best I could, but there were a couple of places that received cross-zone extra watering that started to show pythium. Thankfully, I had the right fungicides available to knock it down after readjusting my heads for more uniform coverage. RK's Elite PRG came in absolutely gorgeous, btw.

Turned out great. We are in southwest Ohio just North of Cincy. Seed (365 SS Bluegrass) was pre germinated and all was going great until mother nature threw us some much cooler weather last year. This was a baseball youth infield we worked on last fall. So roughly 3,000 sqft or so. Let’s just say Bluegrass is not in any kind of hurry for sure. So after about a month I just used our nail drag to open that canopy back up to get that seed to soil contact. What a difference that made. I will email you over some pics of it for you. thoughts on adding to a kbg/fescue lawn to get a little more pop? will the rye die off in the summer time and stand out?

Very curious to see how this holds up over time. Are you anticipating needing to over seed every year or so with extreme summers and winters there?
@LAWNLIFE
@LAWNLIFE 9 ай бұрын
If I like the way it looks, I may overseed every year just to get the prg to be the dominant grass in my side lawn. I don't think ryegrass gets enough credit for being as hardy as it is. Yes there will be some die off in winter but I don't think it will be on a mass scale. I have plenty of prg in my backyard that has survived since the house was built.

Thoughts on the st paul specific NTEP ratings having Fireball as number one but Hattrick not so great? At least that is what i saw using the UMN NTEP search for genetic color. I was considering this same combo but ultimately chose to just go with monostand of FB just for fun and curiosity.

I would start mowing where you want to keep the height of cut at it. Mowing more is always better for grass, young or not.
