OMG How Lucky am I...was walking the neighborhood and saw a "free" mower that looked in good shape which they said was not working for likely "user error" I grabbed the van and picked it up and it did exactly what they said with start once in a while then blow smoke and go out but not start other times. Played around with the spark plug and nothing...Found this video and with my own fingers bent that one metal piece you mentioned to help close the choke and BOOM! Started right up, shut it down and BOOM started right up again! Whoo hoo and thank you for this video.

Thank you. This more or less fixed my issue. My model had a plate protecting the spring and lever controlling the butterfly. The plate was slightly bent inward so it stopped the lever from releasing and closing the choke. A tiny bend outward and it fires up first pull again!

Thank you! Only thing I have to add is whenever you do mower and weed eater repairs please include close up shots and a detailed description of how the linkage is supposed to go. A lot of videos on KZbin don't show that at all and I can't tell you how many hours I've searched and searched on KZbin for numerous engines trying to just find how linkage is set up. I appreciate your videos they have helped me a lot keep up the good work!

Great easy tip & fix . Thanks Don. I noticed the hose connection on the the deck and was wondering your opinion regarding using this feature . When I purchased my Jonsered GT52 F I was told never to use this to wash under the mower as it put water in the bearings and would lead to premature replacement. Cheers from Australia.

Typically cranks first pull. Ran for an hour, stopped to change oil, and it refused to crank. I changed spark plug, cleaned carburetor three times, and adjusted valve clearance - no joy. Everything at rest: the choke valve was closed. Did your bend the bracket tip to forcibly hold the choke valve closed and it fired right up! TIL: I don't like auto-chokes. I was ready to toss it. You saved it. THANKS!

Currently I was looking for a new lawn mower but I've seen people write avoid the auto choke because they fail. Before I buy I'm going to check how the auto choke is assembled to see if it's like yours since that's a visible easy fix.

Check the brake cable first, similar symptoms, the cable doesn't need to be broken for the machine not to start. I had an identical machine the other day similar issue but it was a stretched brake cable, it would pull over without any problems but there was no spark.

I run in to that a lot. People store their mower outside and the cable rusts up inside and freezes up. Then when its pulled, it stretches and breaks the strands in the cable. After that no spark.

Bob Dylan If there is no adjustment, may need to replace the cable. I have adjusted some, if I remember correctly bending the piece near the flywheel brake that the cable attaches to to keep it from grounding out.

QUESTION: My Cub Cadet mower recently had the problem of starting up on the first pull easy enough, but then it would shut off after about 20 seconds. The Thermostat measuring part was replaced. After that, the mower would stay on again; however, the engine did seem to randomly be missing beats. The new BIG problem was that the mower takes over 15 pulls to get it to start up cold. In comparison, after having run for a while, the mower starts on the first or second pull. Clearly, the factor of "Temperature" is involved in starting the mower. This mower won't start "cold" easily. The mower actually started on five or six pulls on an 82-degree day. But on a 60-degree day yesterday, it took 15 pulls to get the mower to start. Do you have a suggestion to fix this?
