So good to see the operation of the ReadyStart being explained correctly, there's so many people who get this so wrong thinking that the thermal device actually takes the choke off as it warms up, and this isn't the case at all. The thermal device as you correctly pointed out just holds the choke off when the engine is hot. Nice job. 🛠

Had the problem where mower would not start without a bit of gas squirted into the carb. The carb was cleaned and appeared to be working properly but I noticed the choke plate was not closed when the motor was cold. I removed the flywheel cover and found a tiny twig had jammed the auto choke lever in the open position. Upon removal of the twig and reassembly, the engine started normally. Thanks for the video!

This is an example of what I dislike about modern small engine carburetor control designs; complex & unreliable system that wasn't designed for the "real world", & designed by someone who apparently has no concept of "real world" conditions. The older manual choke operating system seems much more robust & reliable, & easier to fix (usually with only minor cleaning). This "removed from reality" design mentality seems to apply to many modern machines.

Great video and explanation. It's frustrating that the manufacturers decide to take away the manual choke and replace it with something much more complex, which introduces many more things that can fail and increases the difficulty in troubleshooting (all in the name of convenience of not having to manually push a choke lever). A case of "don't fix/change it if it's not broke."
@machinesnmetal Жыл бұрын
The manufacturers have no choice, the government's force emissions compliance on them and manual chokes pollute too much. It's the main reason Honda dropped out of the lawnmower game this season.

They tend to rich up a bit when you stop the motor as it continues to suck in air/fuel after you let go of the bar and the spark is cut from the equation. Sometimes if you don't wait a few minutes before starting it's a 5 pull start because the chamber is too rich with fuel. I think in the motor manual it even says to wait 3 mins after a shut down to allow the rich to thin out sometimes it's referred to as a flood. Check that flywheel key, could be your problem.

I have this engine on mower I'm working on! Spring was missing on arm which I have replaced. Waiting for more parts before I try to start it. The other mower I'm trying to keep out of junk heap is a Zstart Craftsman with no prime bubble and Fresh start pods. After installing new carb and throttle cable, it won't start because choke doesn't close. The cable I replaced is obsolete and the one Craftsman says is replacement had spring on end instead of dogleg. The one I ordered is shorter but it operates choke lever properly, pulls it all the way back. Mower won't start with rope without start fluid because choke is not closing. Is there an adjustment I need to do? Once started with fluid, it runs perfect! Having trouble finding Fresh start pods, too. Help!!!!!

Thanks for your reply. I think my terminology was confusing. There is nothing connecting the mechanism that closes the butterfly in carb when I engage brake handle to start. Should there be a spring or something connecting the two mechanisms to close butterfly in carb or does it somehow work off off some kind of vacumn. The Air vane on the other mower I'm working on keeps butterfly closed and then opens it up when it's running and has thermostat to regulate. Total different technology. There is nothing that moves the mechanism to close the butterfly unless it's done thru air filter or it needs to be connected with spring or something. No one seems to know???? BS engine# 125K-0658-E1
@machinesnmetal3 жыл бұрын
I looked up your engine number on ereplacement parts.com and it shows that engine came with a primer, manual, and autochoke system. It would be best to hit the scrapyard and get the primer parts and make yours use a primer.
@judisinger36933 жыл бұрын
@@machinesnmetal This machine does have a primer, but the fact that the butterfly is open initially is why it won't start. I found video that showed how to adjust pin in govenor that goes into motor under gas tank? Will this adjustment make it so butterfly is closed initially and then somehow open while running? My other machine has the Air vane system and butterfly is closed initially and then opens while running from air off flywheel. No one can seem to figure out how to get butterfly closed so it will start. YT video says anytime carb is changed, this pin needs to be adjusted? There has never been a manual choke. I bought machine new and it never had starting issues. This new carb is first new one ever put on it. Guess I'll try adjustment, but need to get right size socket! Video says 3/16" but thatcwas big. 4mm fits but mine is not deep enough. Will look up video to reference. Won' t let me paste it here.
@machinesnmetal3 жыл бұрын
if it has a primer then regardless if the butterfly is open or closed when you prime it a shot of fuel will come up out of the gold pipe in the middle of the carburetor and it will prime the engine to start. Alot of the time the gasket in between the air cleaner box and carburetor is not tight enough for the prime pressure to make it from the bubble through the back of the air cleaner and into the small port on the mouth of the carburetor, if you double the gasket and don't tighten the airbox backing too tight is usually works.

I couldn’t get the autochoke linkage reconnected so I just skipped it. Mower runs fine. I’m assuming if I just didn’t hook it up it’s not choking at all? So if I can get it to run then I’m good? I tried forever to get that linkage set but it doesn’t seem compatible with the new carb

If it works, don't fix it

I thought that the automatic choke is activated with the exhaust and a thermo switch that opens and closes the choke when the engine is hot or cold; and what you are describing there is the governor; my old lawn more has that fan operated lever and it does not have an automatic choke.... my new lawnmower has an automatic choke, but I havn't had any reason to remove the covers as yet.

These models use both, it was briggs's last attempt at meeting emission standards with the L head engine. The governor for these engines is located underneath the flywheel. after this engine they went to the E-Series OHV motors.

Hi. I repair lawnmowers. I have a lawnmower with the same carburetor that you have for repair. I cleaned the carburetor and engine compression gauge 2.8bar - 40psi briggs stratton 825 I/C. The engine starts cold, but after a while the revs start to fluctuate. The automatic choke is fine. I haven't found out what could be the cause yet.

40 seems low. Put some 20w50 in it and try the compression test again
