The young Donald Trump was a horrible person, a ruffian with limited talents and low self esteem. That is not the same as being a nut, or being demented. I live in Sweden, the first reaction that Swedes had to Trumps presidental campaign speaches, is that this person is demented. I think I know why people in USA didn't react the same. The average life span among Swedes, that have reached adulthood(*), is three years longer than in USA. This may not seem that much, but the most common cause of death in Sweden is dementia, while the most common causes of death in USA is things like traffic accidents, heart disease, cancer and firearms (violence, accidents, suicide). Many people in USA have early signs of dementia, but most of them die before they get any serious symptoms that can't be ignored. Everybody in Sweden, as well as everybody in the richer countries in Europe and Asia, knows many, many people with some kind of dementia. They have all seen dementia develop from the early symptoms to the late, horrible, life changing, symptoms. (*)Since child mortality is so high in USA (caused by traffic accidents, high birth mortality and gun accidents), I won't skew the numbers by inluding it. The total average life span is more than 5 years longer in Sweden than in USA.

Trump has had the worst first six months as president in history, unless you're William Henry Harrison who had been six feet under for three months at this point. I still find Mr. O'Donnell's suggestion that he thought Pres. Trump was going ga-ga to be unfair speculation on his part, especially since there has been so much evidence over the years of Donald Trump's inability to concentrate, be consistent, remember what he said, and so much evidence of his self-centeredness and need for overwhelming attention compared to other people around him. Those are old problems with his personality. If Mr. O'Donnell is going to be fair, he'd have to look more carefully at the likes of Bernie Sanders, Dianne Feinstein, and Nancy Pelosi (among hundreds of other politicians of a certain age), to see if they are losing functionality that they previously had. Let's not go overboard, when there are already so many other reasons to view Donald Trump as unfit for office AND that precise talking point did Hillary Clinton no good in a race she could have won 51-41-8%, which would have easily given her the Electoral College too.

Donald Trump Sr. is used to having "wiggle room" in his commitments so resorts to mind games to preserve that faculty. I'm not convinced his faculties are deteriorating, just that his ways don't allow for specifics on purpose, that's his modus operandi for life. That is not a dynamic the serves well for a POTUS. The mind game, I suspect, is something he learned early in his youth and I would bet his mother was a passive/aggressive person in some respect. I recognize this having dealt with it some in my own life and it is confusing.

Just one little thing: If Trump Sr. is as incoherent as he often appears to be, how was he able to dictate Trump Jr.'s statement? Perhaps Trump Sr. had some input, but someone else dictated the statement, someone with keen awareness of the legal effects of those remarks.
