Award-winning theoretical physicist and bestselling author Lawrence Krauss (The Physics of Star Trek, A Universe From Nothing) is not afraid to court controversy. In 2015, he made waves when he published an essay in The New Yorker with the headline: “All Scientists Should be Militant Atheists.” He also stormed out of a 2013 London debate entitled: “Islam or Atheism: Which Makes More Sense?” because the audience was segregated by gender in keeping with Muslim traditions. Krauss found this untenable. He later returned to the stage and shared his opinion that this sort of religious observance was inappropriate at a public college. In his new book, The Greatest Story Ever Told-So Far: Why Are We Here? Krauss explores the furthest reaches of space and time and the natural forces that govern our existence. He challenges us to re-envision ourselves and our place within the universe.

+lowellaby - "so glad my timeline is overlapping with Krauss' " - What a very *cool* way to phrase that! Hadn't looked at it quite that way. But now that you mention it, we are living at a wonderful point in time aren't we, in which we are (or recently have been) collectively enriched by the lives, work and sheer *presence* of such minds as Krauss, Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris, et.al.?

When I watch him at the Nobel Conference 49, I'm struck by how quick to assume the other scientists and professors are -- and how steadfast Krauss is to remain skeptical. He's illuminating that way of thinking even among his mostly-like-minded (and established) peers. So, I don't consider him a luminary for his physics exactly, but for the fact that I'm inspired by his critical thinking and for his generosity in sharing it to the public.

at 48:40 he talks about how the magnet waves are bounced off of the superconductor. lately I've been reading about radio transmission polarity. to reduce interference from your own signal, you can use a circularly polarized antenna. it propagates the wave in a spiral shape with either a left hand twist or right hand twist to the shape of the wave so that any reflections off of objects bounce off in reverse (LH turns to RH) and is not picked up as interference due to the antenna looking for a specific left or right waveform. is there anything of that nature relevant to electromagnetic waves? or is it specifically the frequency modulation aspect of radio? or would it not matter since the wave is still carrying a signal/energy, regardless of the shape of it's propagation through space. sincerely, uneducated me.

Thought puzzles: With infinity and eternity everything that is possible, is probably inevitable. We are here, therefore we are possible. Perhaps endlessly repeating? (Heidegger- Being and Time?) Just as nothing (no-thing) lasts forever, nothingness can't last forever. Our being here seems almost impossible until you factor in infinity and eternity. We were inevitable. Which is more likely, or harder to conceive?: Infinity or non-infinity? Eternity or non-eternity?

I do prefer to listen to the Prof's educational lectures, (like the direct approach), because in my own experience, the problem with getting taught one particular way of describing the world is that the effort to reverse the process and unlearn is twenty times longer than learning. (it turned out to be right) So the better plan is to carry on with what you know, but make it as complete as time and ability allows. Maybe it's a matter of natural symmetry, and "you can't teach pigs to sing", so always be constructive. (?) AI will replace the intelligent humans, but what about the rest then? At least there will be plenty of time to follow the path of Faraday, or is that already true?

Electricity has surface waves and vibration and alignment. But magnetic field curves spaces with a flower spring action for movement. Mostly electric motors run with spring action of twisted lines of forces of magnetic fields. That's why they induce ahead of time for electric vibration to travel. Otherwise electricity cannot travel. Induction is a process of looking ahead. Impedance is opposite and that's why you have to bend the electric coil in such a way that force power is on a line or a circular or elliptical. The elliptical is always the true way because of lookahead. In a nucleus it is the lines of curves of a magnetic field that are curved so much to trap electrons in its position. The centre of black holes should have massive electron traps in magnetic fields. Time is a curvature ratio of fields. Heating is always an impedance curve. That's why you have so much heat in the stars. Normal atoms don't have impedance so not much heat. Can you bend lasers for propulsion. Or at least quantum computing.

It’s significant that when ever Dr Krauss describes the lead up to a new discovery, he mentions again and again ... all the seamlessly integrated “accidents” which have produced the complexity (Universe) he has spent his career exploring. Count his use of the word accident and then listen to the part where he described why he was so resistant to the “fact” that a field like The Higgs “permeates all of space”. So resistant to what he likened to “something which sounds religious” ... omnipresent and powerful. So resistant due to his unconscious bias against the actual holistic organismic nature of the Universe... that he wrote “5 papers” about how the Higgs could not be actual. He has absolutely no self awareness regarding his militant materialist bias. His notion that the Universe ... despite the obvious evidence ... cannot possibly be more akin to an organism than a machine. He would rubbish this as unscientific but would them emphasise all the “accidents” in all this order he and his colleagues uncover. Hypocrisy. What is the obvious evidence that the Universe is organismic and conscious at every level? Super hot plasma left to effectively cool and clump within its intrinsic order of the 4 forces and integral geometry/mathematics .... and some waiting around for 14 billion years for some interaction growth/evolution/mixing/reacting to happen ... produced Einstein and Walt Disney ( but not directly Mickey Mouse 🐭 ) ...produced all this .... without one single human thought or scientific theory. Why can’t science just SEE the obvious .... that is the same growth process as an egg to a chicken. The Universe is one field of energy ... there are no particles (ask Dr Sean Carroll) It’s holographic ... from top to bottom and inside out (ask Dr Leonard Suskind) It’s entangled and connected instantaneously (ask any physicist about non locality and the measurement problem) And ... this is the other part where Dr Krauss’s bias cannot allow him to go ...we know part of this one unitary field/entity is alive and conscious ... I just checked with ME, MYSELF, I. The only fact I can know for certain without consulting anyone ... any scientist. Therefore we know a part of this unified field is alive and conscious ... this means that that quality is holographically intrinsically inseparable from the WHOLE FIELD ... THE UNIVERSE. Any other conclusion contradicts logic, cause and effect. Mr Krauss seems unaware that chickens and eggs exist ... and that if he plants a tiny seed a redwood tree will grow .... with just some soil and the seasons as support. Like the (once plasma) Universe, it will grow from the state of its own nature/environment/intrinsic forces/teleology. Hot plasma to Einstein....... there is not an “accident” to be found in that whole growing and ever evolving process. To think otherwise would be to believe that if an Atom Bomb was detonated in outer space (resulting in super hot plasma), we would just have to wait around for 14 billion years for Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney to appear from it (though not necessarily in that order 😀. Of course no one would expect that to happen .... but it did happen 14 billion years ago ... because unlike an A bomb blast the Big Bang plasma has the whole Universe and everything we perceive in it ... enfolded in potential in that primordial infinitely dense ball of energy (including consciousness/subjectivity and of course what was to become the unresolved “measurement problem” in quantum theory/physics) It’s embarrassing to listen to an intelligent person indoctrinating children in his audience with this militant materialist drivel. A grown man actively destroying the wonder he is a manifestation, while suggesting the same cynical preposterous myopic vision, be adopted by his audience. He wrote 5 papers railing against a group of scientists intuition that there must be a Universal field like The Higgs responsible for the phenomena of mass. What more do you need to know. No one knows what ... Energy IS Life IS What consciousness IS No one knows how something comes out of nothing or how a Universe or (as is more likely) a likely cyclic Universe could have always existed .... eternally... out of time. It’s one or the other isn’t it? No one knows how chemistry becomes conscious biology ... but it did. This suggests that energy/plasma ... has never been dead/inert/lifeless/unconscious at any stage. Evidence? No one knows how chemistry transitions to biology. No one can discern a once only transition point from dead to alive from unconscious to conscious. This would suggest the hypothesis of an eternal living conscious (Organismic) Universe at every level is ... however bizarre, more likely a more accurate representation of actuality. This suggests that energy is both alive and conscious at some level ... and can grow at a Universal and personal scale SIMULTANEOUSLY. It is both subjective and objective. We are energy evolved ....and we have an internal subjective Universe in addition to what looks like an external but integral outward UNIVERSE as our field of perception and lived reality. No wonder physics is in a dead end at present .... they actually believe that the Universe is a dead unconscious machine .. which came alive and conscious in us ... by accident and from a preexisting dead unconscious state. For Dr Krauss’s vision to be accurate there would have had to be a near infinite series of accidents... on the journey , “dead” unconscious plasma to living conscious Einstein. It beggars belief ... drop the militant materialist dogma, it’s intellectually embarrassing and detrimental to our continued existence on this planet 🌍 which is being exploited as if it’s a dead mechanical machine. Wonder why? Science tells and has told children (future scientists) and citizens this false narrative/fairy story for 200 years and counting.

Itemise your knowledge of how “dead” plasma (dead “virtual” Lego like particles) “developed” subjectivity/intelligence/consciousness .... let alone came to (self regenerative) LIFE. I’ll spare you the easy stuff ... what dark energy dark matter IS. Failing that, watch the following documentary about the late Prof David Bohm, protégé of Einstein, friend and colleague of Sir Roger Penrose, who (as Prof Penrose has) has made some headway to establishing a new holistic paradigm, which has at least a chance of moving beyond the the impasse you are, it seems, not even aware of. Your bull***t is already known, figured out and complete. That’s militant materialism for ya. Film - Infinite potential. The life and ideas of David Bohm. kzbin.info/www/bejne/marWfqOXmcqWnLc Live a little outside the box 📦 Read “The Science Delusion” by Dr Rupert Sheldrake” an eminent research scientist/plant biologist, who also dialogued with the philosopher/mystic Jiddu Krishnamurti and Bohm and who’s theories re the importance of field phenomena in Biology, are being explored as we speak, by a biologist, tipped as likely get a Nobel prize for his work by fellow scientists. Many cutting edge physicists think that insights from biology may lead the way out of their current impasse. You don’t know there is an impasse .... THAT is my point. The precursors of a paradigm flip always sound crazy. Aristotle, Western Theology, Copernicus, Newton, Einstein/Bohr .... ? What is crazy about acknowledging that dead unconscious plasma (dead, according to materialism) ... from its own nature and order and with no help from human thought or science ... produced conscious chickens 🐓 and eggs 🥚 and humans 💃🏻 This came about with just some clumping cooling and waiting around/and self interacting. The current paradigm has no way of accounting for this or has an understanding that is remotely logical Huge aspects of reality are ignored by physicists ... ie the nature of life/consciousness, yet they say they are seeking a “Theory of everything”. Everything should mean ... EVERYTHING ... shouldn’t it? Not everything ... minus all the hard core stuff that we haven’t the first clue about. The materialist assumptions that aren’t working/don’t map on to living organismic reality, need to be questioned. You don’t know that project is underway. How can plasma give rise to living conscious organism at the universal and individual level ... if the potential for the same, is not inherent in the initial state and the possibly eternally cyclic Universal system as a whole. Crazy? bull***t? You should keep the above in mind and watch the film 2001 a Space Oddysey again. As much documentary as Sci fi. It sets out the actual mystery of existence ... in widescreen. A great work of art. It was written by the telecommunications scientist and author Arthur C Clarke who was also interested in the work of Prof Bohm and the mystic J. Krishnamurti. D. Bohm dialogued with JK about the nature of reality, for almost 3 decades. Mystic - someone who experiences Universe as self and not intellectually. There is a subjective Universe in other words/which is not a separate reality from what we perceive as being wholly objective. Experimental work guided by Bohm’s theories is currently being pursued by a group of UK scientists. You haven’t noticed that materialism and it’s tech ... wonderful as it is ... is wedded to blind capitalism and we are sitting on the branch, being sawn through by its unfolding, over the past 200 years. Look out your window at the weather patterns and then watch the news. The consequences of militant materialism are writ large and unquestioned are all around us.

1) You're missing the second part, "at a constant speed." Moving at a constant velocity from your reference frame is indistinguishable from being static. See calculus, if your velocity is a constant its derivative is zero hence static, hence indistinguishable. 2) Right, without leaving the earth and changing your reference frame, you can't perform an experiment to determine which body is moving and with which relation. I.E. Two trains moving at a constant velocity in opposite directions, without changing reference frames, you couldn't determine if train one was moving, one was static and the other moving, etc.

1)Yeah..why spend money COLLECTED FROM the people..on the people. Let's pay defense contractors more right? In 2015, the world's countries spends about $1.6 trillion on defense, U.S accounts for 37% of total. U.S. is a 4.3-4.5% of the world pop. You think this country spends enough on defense? 2) If you want to increase the U.S budget by cutting defense and that amount spending on the sciences, I agree.

EXPERIMENT and EXPERIENCE form the cornerstones of existence. While experiment refers to objectivity the kinds of exercises we conduct in the lab to test a hypothesis, experience usually refers to subjectivity wherein we are aware of our thoughts, feelings, surroundings and can cogitate on experimental results or simply bask in our self awareness or enter the realm of imagination in which comparing past results, dreaming up new ideas, poetry, creativity and subconscious impressions play out. Science is stuck with the objective or experimental side of existence as seen in its mathematical models that it tests out in labs but where subjectivity is concerned well science remains clueless.

All those hundreds and thousands of years went by, ,and then I came out of complete darkness out of my mothers womb. Where was I during the Middle Ages? How did I miss the George Washington administration. Or Lincoln"s Gettysburg address? Where was I over 2000 years ago when Jesus supposedly gave the Sermon On the Mount. Gee, I sure wasn't around in those caveman and dinosaur days. Where the hell was I to miss all that! Oh, I know. I had to be a gleam in my father's eye! :)

Scientific method and Virtual particles; The cause and effect or the principle of causation plays important role in the analysis of physical phenomena. When a phenomena is observed the scientist always looks for the cause of the observed effect based on scientific known principles. But if no such principles or laws are found in the storehouse of knowledge, then the theoretical physicist attempts to invent one by using abstract thinking called mathematical reasoning. Virtual particles is an invention by means of such methods. In modern physics a Virtual particles is a phenomena that can only be inferred by mathematically, such as laws of symmetry, but it's never directly observed or Virtual particles could also be detected by its secondly physical effects (disturbance) in experiments, but never directly. Hence the term "virtual particles" .
