If people still question Snowden's motives, they should ask themselves the following question : What did he left behind by going public? The answer : his own security, his whole career, his country, his family, his friends, his reputation, basically, his whole life. Most of us wouldn't even have the courage to let one of these go in our own lives. In my opinion, he's more than a hero. He's someone who chose to put aside his own interests for the collective well-being of mankind. Whatever your opinion on him, and regardless of the consequences for the secret services, we all have to agree that it took guts to do what he did. If only 1 out of 1000 americans could be that honest and stand for what they believe in, the USA could regain its position has the most admired country in the world (instead of the most hated one). He stood for himself and all of us in order to denounce the abusive use of our collective power. Respect!

+Eric Thivierge What have you been drinking? Sacrifice, really??? About his own security, he was certainly concerned because he knew that if he ran to our enemies, they would protect him. About his whole career, he apparently made it gainful by going to Russia. About his country, he considered a communist regime to be where his allegiance lay. His family, probably had a love/ hate relationship with them and his own selfishness got the best of him. His reputation, did not have one until he got all this publicity. His whole life, just where he chose to be, spending it with his fellow comrades. If he had truly sacrificed, he would have never ran, but he is a coward, and did not want to face the consequences of his treason. He is no martyr and has no integrity as you described, but just a self indulgent pompous weasel who deserves no respect.

LOL, You seem to be going off the deep end with Trump. You seem to read into things that were never said. When is the last time you got yourself checked out at the local sanitarium? As for perfection and your man child coward, Snowden, he is your perfect communist minion. You are obviously ignorant about the cyber wars that have been ongoing since the mid 80's. Don't worry though, you're not the only one. There are many more like you, delusional and vulnerable to stupidity. If your small minded perception is that the U.S. has such dark sides, they're much darker in Russia, China, Iran, North Korea and all those other mental midget countries that advocate rule of law by way of communism, socialism and terrorism. In the eyes of mind numbing indoctrinated victims as yourself, you are truly a victim in your mind.

LOL, Alfina I'm laughing at and with you, ya flaming silly putty. Do you have a clue as to what you are talking about. You obviously are not a worldly person. There are shadowy, clandestine and criminal groups all over the world, who want to bring down our system of democracy and free market system. I'm not certain as to whom you are preaching. But here is the big picture and why Snowden caused the U.S. Government, private sector and it's citizenry and the citizenry of our allies such great harm. He made available to the Russians and the Chinese and other hostile governments ways to hack into our technology systems more aggressively, compromising all of our financial and personal privacy. And, you have not a clue as to what initiated these surveillance programs from your useless diatribe above Bad guys, that's right, not the U.S. Government, but those whose interests have been to undermine our military and economic superiority, and national security. And, for us to defeat these bad guys in the cyber world, a good offense makes for a good defense. An aggressive offense will only help us to deter the damage attempted by our enemies. As for clever arguments, nothing clever about them. I was not indoctrinated like yourself to think only in a conspiratorial mindset (your way). All you have stated is a regurgitated opinion and talking points based on what others of the far left or far right have said without any proof of intent. All I'm saying, is from life experience, that of which has taught me to adapt, to work hard, to become a contributing law abiding citizen to my community and country, and profitable, sharing my God given wealth with those in need. And please don't lecture me about courage, you seem to have no clue as to the meaning. So Alfina, truly, without twisting your panties into a rope, are you a friend or foe?

Edward Snowden is a very intelligent man. He is very well spoken and really seams to have a grip on what his agenda is. I think our government is worried about what information he all has, but I don't think he would release any sensitive information. I believe he has the best interest of our country in mind otherwise he could have done real damage to the NSA, CIA, FBI, etc. I like how Obama calls him a 29 year old hacker when Edward is immensely more intelligent than Obama or most presidents are/were.

Why doesn't Snwoden really understand what is going on then, if he is really so much smarter than Obama? He does not see the necessity for these programs, or how the world has changed because of technology. He talks about this shadowy high up elite that he says have created a culture of less accountability. I don't think this is true, it's just that we see more of them now because of technology. They will do anything but explain themselves to us, because that is not the level at which representational democracy works in America. We have a great need to know country, and until someone thinks of a better way to do things, that is what we are stuck with - that is the American empire expanding across the globe. Certainly measurably better than any other empire, but there is no way the productive people of the world are going to back the retreat of the American empire because it would mean the advance or Russia, China or the inchoate Islamic Caliphate. No one wants any of those options, and the American system is pretty good for most people, but, yes, hardly perfect. If we/you want perfect, think it up, explain it, try to get people to buy into it, try to bring about change. Not so easy is it. So, we stick with what has worked.

Dominique Haupt Before you go invoking the Roman Empire, why don't you go learn something about it? Read a book or something. Watch a documentary. The parallels between the US and the Romans are almost non-existent. The Roman Empire did not have a rule of law, democracy, an industrial economy, aircraft carriers, ... I could go on and on. The Romans were brilliant for their day, but they have neighbors that wore them down over time. We have no such neighbors, and we have a fair trade system that treats our supposedly conquered lands fairly, unlike the Romans. You have a lot to learn.

The thing that bugs me the most about NSA surveillance is that the public has no right to access that data to prove their own innocence when falsely accused. Think of the legal implications if you knew that you were in a particular location when a crime was committed and knew that if you could access NSA data to prove your location you'd be found innocent. Or if you could access recorded phone records to prove that someone had launched a credible threat against you and needed protection... the list goes on. The point is the NSA data collection scheme has yet to demonstrate public usefulness of the data OR they are lying about just how useful it is to them. I don't think the government should have the capability of using data to attack individuals unless it also gives them the right to defend themselves with unredacted access to data that may prove your innocence. Problem is there is no accountability on the part of the NSA to allow us to know if we are getting genuine data about us. They hide behind the excuse of national security but I think it goes way beyond that. With no accountability it's pretty much up to our imaginations as to what they do with that data and there is no disinterested body to verify the use and purposes of that data. No doubt large interests like the Rothschilds ownership of controlling interesting in 80 percent of the worlds largest corporations have access to this data if they want it. I find that troublesome.

Yes sir I put a comment that u may find quite revealing in comments section of this video. Also I find that in regards to Ukraine crisis our representatives of government ie biden ,blinkin,Austin Pelosi schumer as well as most other seem to not only function in lock step but to function largely as drones without any capacity for independent thought . That screams incapacity to me Incapacity to function as a representative of the people or the country for their best intrest. This seems to be indemic to how thease people function as our representatives and in our name. This historical evidence is right in front of us and goes back at least to the end of ww2 and in fact much farther if researched . I apologize for the rant but don't feel like we the people have any representation which under the constitution and the declaration of independence leaves the citizen to only one option and one conclusion

Looking back at growing up , I am so grateful that my father told me and my siblings. "Right is right,wrong is wrong and the truth will stand when the world is on fire". Hundreds of times. And I'm grateful to have had a mother who taught us to hate lies and telling lies. I feel like I can understand a lot of what edward says. Knowing that deceit is what has caused this world so much needless pain and if humanity wants a better present or possible future it begins with awareness and truth. The continuation of deceit only produces the same results it always has. If nothing changes,nothing changes.

Many thoughts and questions, but here are a few points: 1) Do we, as humans, still have the right to decide in what kind of society do we want to live in, and how to go about that? 2) what is the purpose of a law system and which one do we need now? (is it about providing orderly infrastructure for a fair, prosperous and dynamically balanced society? or is it about the legitimacy and stability provided by a theoretical statement that is inapplicable in reality?), 3)should surveillance and spying be on a slippery slope or rather restricted, so as to carry on with further global human development? 4) is it a problem of national and international law incompatibility? Or just a generalized human rights violation that are the consequences of cumulative errors from past events?
@tsreasonify
@tsreasonify 9 жыл бұрын
1) I think I do 2) To regulate society, we need a just one. It is partly about providing order and infrastructure. But it is also partly about establishing truth. 3) Ideally restricted, in reality humanity needs to be better educated about information technology and private citizens should take private steps to anonymise their data. 4)It is a problem of too high complexity for most of humanity to be able to understand the problem. Also a problem of information about the problem not being revealed (and verified by an expert) to the public, which is what Snowden changed. What you say about a cumulative error is also correct. For me it seems rather a logical outcome of the legalization of using money as a means of free speech. The corruption at the very heart of the United States policy making machine. Direct money transfer form industry to policy makers, giving already wealthy individuals and companies an obvious advantage on the marketplace. If you are able to invest money to pay off a few politicians to ensure laws that benefit you through subsidies or tax breaks or to damage competitors (what is done to tesla right now). Supposedly, the United States market is free, but it is obviously not. This is what is hurting the US economy the most. The US is still the largest economy on the planet. If I cannot trust them to play fair, it incentivizes me to play unfair as well. Went off on a bit of a ramble here, but I am glad to see another person also thinking about these problems. This is our time. We are the makers of our future.

Snowden points out that that there are finite resources and that mass surveillance has been extremely ineffective for targeted adversaries (boston bombers) and for finding terrorist attacks in general. This presupposes that the _goal_ of mass surveillance is to protect us from these low probability events/people. But the mass surveillance program might have other goals and it might be excellently suited for those. In particular for recognising and thereby influencing public opinion, managing a campaign, monitoring influence and demographic of politically adversarial movements. Given how extraordinarily ineffective it is at its presumed task we can either assume monumental ineptness (which is indeed possible) or we can look at alternative hypotheses and look for evidence supporting them.

America, that is, those upper level actors at the level Snowden has depicted, are all about directing money to people they "like". It is really as simple as that. If you direct money to the needy you can do good, but it is as likely that you will have problems at some later stage if you empower the families of people like say Michael Brown. There is no reason and it makes no sense to do that. It does make sense to keep an eye on people and families like that because they can replicate, that is, they can make more of themselves, and most costs for society as a whole, in wasted social services, wasted education, prisons, more police costs, and more liabilities for everyone else as they might become victims of crime. I am glad Snowden revealed what he knows, because a lot of Americans don't really think about this and do need to know and consider what it is all about. This is not about harassing productive law-abiding Americans, and we should all know that. Where has that happened?

Why? It's a public event, and was going to be uploaded to a Google site anyway. Nothing is trustworthy unless it's open-source and under your control. Jitsi has become pretty great nowadays, and for more casual videocalls Signal works great.

I suppose had I been in that ethics lab class I'd have asked, "Were you ever asked or told to do something constraining you or leading to an act of treason for you, to do it, knowing what you know, that was not a direct suborning-to...?" I would like to see Sen. John McCain debate Edward Snowden. Snowden would run intellectual circles around McCain as McCain tried to tag Snowden as a traitor. McCain would get so frustrated and angry that he'd probably break a tooth clenching his jaw.

I'll jump to conclusions too then, and determine that that makes you a silly hothead. Which is why you jump to the defense of McCain. Silly hotheads have gotta stick together.

giving the public a chance is so messy - I'm not sure that we could get guarantee national security during that time period. The premise of his argument is still sound BUT the public got verrrry dependent/stupid around the time of the invention of the TV. It is my impression that the more power an entity has the more it is usually abused for the good of the entity. I name it the entity because it can be everything and everyone in the world who can gain more and more power and eventually this entity develops madnes of greatness (I don't know if it's correctly translated (Google Translator failed) - Anyway - If you get so powerful that you think you are above all laws then it's really really bad and in time becomes more and more destructive and corruptive (as you know everyone can be bought for a price). This massive power is no good for everyone in the world exactly because it is ever so often abused so in that sense - I'm glad that snowden and Assange and of course other have the guts to stand forward ain order to stob this abuse of power.
