I keep forgetting that this is a real class of locomotive. It's so thin and exposed next to other engines, it feels almost fantastical by comparison.

Interesting, but what is the valve gear on that? It looks extremely unusual, like nothing I've ever seen before. Seems like the expansion link is set at a fixed angle, and the return crank pushes the die block up and down it to generate the valve movement (?) Presumably as you notch up, the expansion link goes closer to vertical (?) I think I can see how it works, but I would have thought the continuous movement of the die block up and down the expansion link would soon cause wear and sloppiness, especially being outside mounted on a contactor's engine which tend to work in grubby conditions - although it looks like it has bronze slippers to reduce wear (?) It raises so many questions in my mind, why do it that way? What's the advantage? I can see that compared to Stephensons' it only needs one return crank rather than 2 eccentrics, but surely Walschaerts would be simpler and more robust? Can you do a show and tell on the valve gear please? I would be really interested to see that explained, and I'm sure other steam buffs would like to see it too as it is so unusual. Marion

it's a bit he does where the smaller fireboxes don't require precision, so he plays it super serious with words and face, while his hands just goof off

@@lmm Knew there would be a good reason. You are very thorough so I knew there would be one. I enjoy your videos immensely. Merry Christmas by the way from Queensland, Australia and thanks for your work. Im a steam engineman down here but we drive them upside down and it makes filming them more difficult. I've also just stepped away for a much needed spell from driving 4000t ore trains in New South Wales over the famous blue mountains for a living for many years. I started at a heritage railway though as a youngster aswell at a little Queensland town called Gympie. You may have heard of the Mary Valley Rattler?. The Rattler is narrow gauge like the rest of the qld network (3ft, 6in) and I also volunteered in nsw during my time down there for a mainline steam operator on the standard gauge called Lachlan Valley Railway. I used to fire for another group in Queensland, based at Bundaberg too where they run a 1914 0-4-0 O&K, a 1907 John fowler 0-6-2 and an 0-4-2 Bundaberg Fowler from the 2ft gauge sugar industry here. They also have an 0-6-2 version of a Bundaberg fowler aswell, No.1 in fact but its not yet been restored to working. Those Bundaberg fowlers are lovely. Roller bearing axle boxes in those.
