I'm reading this book on the history of the Nashville music scene, and find it both ironic and poetic that the country music scene started so the locals had radio stations of their own (wasn't sophisticated enough for proper radio). And in a lot of ways? The scene has become the very thing it was trying to escape when it all started (like Scarface). Problem is they would make artistic decisions based on the sales they themselves were influencing and inflating. Always say they were looking for "authentic people", but what they're really looking for is malleable. We lost a lot of great musicians because of how their uniqueness wasn't "authentic enough". The whole greater music industry is held together with this soft power of manufactured authority, that frankly wouldn't be able to stand on its own merit otherwise. In some ways we live off that Romanticism? In other ways it's killing us. And it's a serious problem in the industry overall. Not saying theres no money in music, but the process can feel like selling ice to Eskimos for a very good reason. Music doesn't make you feel new things exactly, it helps you feel things that have been inside the entire time. Musicians make the sounds, the listeners makes the music. So in many ways it should be an easy sell (as long as you don't look at it too objectively). "People who believe in sure things are technically crazy." - Sum Dood

Thank you for putting the spotlight on this, Miss Krystle. I love that you care about music from the ground level up. You are so right about becoming your own record label. I just wish we didn't have to depend on third party distributors to get our music on these major platforms. This new world streaming music model is really hurting indie artists. So many of our musical peers have gotten out of the game and have given up. However, we have become just as loyal to our listeners as our music making. 🙏🏻 We are in it to win it! You're ongoing message of knowledge is empowering. 💪🏻 Knowledge is power! 🎶

I feel Oliver is very honest and coherent, everything he said I got to experience as well, my life has always been a journey to the next song and I sacrificed everything that was important to me, I move to Los Angeles, got a record deal from Geffen and toured for it only to fall apart from all the money grabbing people that came with the notoriety, manager taking hundreds of thousands from advances and account, producer trying to insert a person his wife managed into the songwriting process for exponential royalties and plenty of ego's, lies and manitpulation that created the ending of everything I worked so passionatly and hard for, I work alone now and feel for all the passionate people that get led into a weed chipper, happy holidays everyone, be blessed and may inspiration be the eternal gift you recieve

As a musician/writer who started back in 1970, I tell younger musicians now to think long and hard before "signing with a major label". What exactly ARE they going to do for you? You have to already have management, and legal, and a street team, and sponsors. So they'll give you a LITTLE money towards tour expenses and then want a BIG taste of your merch sales. YOU'LL pay for a video and audio recording that theyll then get higher up on Spotify and Apple Music playlists and take most of the streaming money. What exactly will they really do for you?

Excellent content and observations. As to the whole AI conversation, and both you and Oliver touched on it…it’s the element of Soul that cannot be artificially generated. Auto tune and backing tracks might have their limited place, however a “live show” ought to be just that, warts and all imho. I’m just now entertaining the ideas for thumbnails for individual song uploads and placement. Having an inner wrestle with using AI even for that limited feature. Interesting times for sure. Authenticity is becoming more and more scarce…but more and more to be treasured. Love your channel and all that you make available. Thank you🙏🏻

The MUSIC LOVERS I talk to tell me LOUD AND CLEAR: I want to keep the musicians I love and cherish from careers in music. I want them blocked from being heard on major radio stations, I want the mainstream media to concentrate on corporate acts, I want these musicians that I like to get low low streaming rates, and be denied fair reviews in all mainstream music media, I want them to all make less than minimum wage ; just as long as those 10 multi millionaire aging generic pop stars that I see promoted every year over and over, and the Big 3 Labels that control the entire music industry, get all the money. (Warner, Universal, Sony,) I know that the handful of promoted pop stars are 100,000 times better than all the musicians I listen to combined, and that they deserve to have 100,000 times more money; while they watch and see all the rest of the musicians in the world in poverty. Seriously, I can search out those poor poor musicians - so why should I do anything to help them. Clearly buying a t-shirt or cd now and then, or watching them in a half empty dive should be enough money for decades of practice and work right? Then I respond HUH??? Join the music revolution against the Big ThreeLabels, and for all musicians. Start by sharing the news with the people and media you like.

Music Realist: I use reverb/delay on my vocals but never auto tune. It just never sat "right" with me. That said, I always sing the ENTIRE song in one take. I personally like the "live" versions even if I mess something up. Recently I had to redo a song a number of times because I kept choking up/began to cry (based on the Donbas region-what they've gone through - sitll going through - since the Orange Revolution). I finally got to the point and said, "Ok Miss-One-Take-Girl, pick one and move on, you have so many more songs to finish!" I know those who dance all over the stage are lip syncing. I don't mind if a solo artist shows up with backing tracks (clearly they can't play guitar drums piano & sing simultaneously) that include harmonies along w/ instrumentals as long as they are actually singing the main vocal melody. Honestly, I'd rather hear really good Karaoke singers than pay a lot of money for a circus show where all I'm hearing is the same thing I hear on the radio/stream/release. But I am/have been and always will be the 'odd duck in the pond of gigantic catfish' ... Ooh, that could make a good countrified song!

We just had a band meeting last night about establishing a band LLC and a subsequent operation agreement to protect us and set expectations that we need to adhere to. As you've stated and others, too, many do not treat their bands or solo songwriter as a business. We are aware that music is art first, but a commodity second. Just because we have to market it as a commodity still should not lessen the impact of the art itself. It's a vehicle to get it to more potential fans. The very people who will be supporting you in your career.

There's time-space, modulation, dynamics, harmonic/saturation and pitch effects. Auto tune "corrects" the input you give it, therefore it's fixing something, not only enhancing it. Most people havent been to concerts of japanese artists, but you should know that they don't use auto tune at all, there shouldn't be any reason for artists in other parts of the world to do it either unless they have sore throat or something.. Using it shows that you are lazy, showing up and doing that is pretty disrespectful to the people who pays to listen to you, that's where you draw the line, when it becomes unprofessional or when your work is not worth what you are charging.

Strangley even though someone subscribes my subscription doesn't go up but even goes down. Really weird.I have comments that the listeners are really surprised that I dont have a million subscribers. The music business is…. Guess what? It’s all of that and more. There are good folks who make and produce the music out there. I know many of them very well. I gravitated to Bluegrass and away from R & R after experiencing real support and a certain openness when it came to sharing the music and encouraging young musicians. The tradition of Bluegrass is based on sharing songs and supporting your musical peers. There are some glaring exceptions to that though. I know em. I don’t have any disdain for the perpetuators of the many pitfalls I’ve managed to avoid. I am, however, totally within my rights to assess rather than judge. Music, to me, is not an option. It’s necessary. Col. Bruce Hampton, Ret. \told me one time years ago “The music business is riddled with scoundrels. If you can help being involved, help it. If you can’t join the club.” Peace

You have what I call 'music prudes' or 'music snobs'. They think that if people don't make or produce music the way they do (with real instruments), it's not 'good' music. 'Good' music and 'bad' music is an opinion, not a definitive fact. What I think is 'good' may be 'bad' to someone else and vice versa. If someone produces music with auto-tune, drum loops, AI, or anything else and it sounds good to me, I will listen to it and enjoy it. The same rule applies for music produced with real instruments and without the use of auto-tune and AI. I go based on what I hear, not based on how it was made. However, if a person uses AI, and the AI completely rips off another artist, then, for the sake or what's ethical, I'd reject it.

people have good intentions with what they do. Like the Music industry originally was created to help people get in to music, get their songs out there and help them thrive. However like with Government, which was originally meant to be in the background and stay out of our lives and just be there for emergencies, power makes itself known and then power corrupts and it takes on this corrupt form and gets bigger and bigger and as it gets bigger the beast becomes uncontrollable to the point where you can not get it back in to the bottle again until there is a revolution of sorts, which is kind of happening right now with the Music Industry. Their grip is loosening and they are losing power. HOWEVER, the industry is smart and knows how to eventually adjust and I fear they will take advantage of the independent music scene and self promotion and music streaming and use it to their advantage to crush the artists so they bend to their will again. I support as many independent artists as I can when I can. I love music of all types. If it has a good beat, a good tune, a good rhythm, or sparks an emotion I will jam to it. I really enjoyed watching you react to Oliver, I could see in your face that you enjoyed and agreed with a lot of what he said by how your eyes lit up, or you framed a smile on your face and your slight head nods in agreement. I could see that you truly were getting in to what he was saying and not just going through the motions of reacting to it for views. I just bought an acoustic-electric guitar and plan on trying to teach myself how to play. When I was very young I had played the Piano and was in recitals and was almost somewhat of a prodigy, so much so that my parents had my teacher fly to Germany to hand play and pick out a Grotrian Grand Piano. Unfortunately several years later we moved out of DC to Florida and it ended up becoming just an art piece sitting in the corner of the living room collecting dust until we sold it. I lost all interest in playing when we moved. I am 50 now and I still have always had that itch to play again. So figured I would try the Guitar haha. Who knows maybe I may be a very late bloomer and be a successful musician and if so I may need a contract lawyer so I will seek you out 🤣🤣

"Sharing pain" is such a cliché now, it's a very childish intention to be honest, it's all about the ego. People would expect artists to say something new, not repeathing cliches, and instead now it's all about the ego, most musicians aren't even passionate about music at all.

@@guitaristssuck8979 This is so true, especially in pop music. It's hard to find authenticity, but you can find ego everywhere. For me, "sharing pain" is about exposing your vulnerabilities. It should be the opposite of ego.

@guitaristssuck8979 9 күн бұрын
@samanthaxnicole it's still ego because of its intention; there's literally nothing more egocentric than that and what makes it worst is that there is that facade of fake humility. We got too many kids who think they're special. It's the equivalent of a real life conversation where a stranger shows up and starts chatting about his/her problems out of the blue. Great artists are never too explicit about their pains. Pop, country, metal, whatever genre-oriented act like the gentleman in the video are just repeating cliches ignoring what makes artists unique.
@samanthaxnicole
@samanthaxnicole 9 күн бұрын
@@guitaristssuck8979 I think there is a difference between someone parroting "pain" or "fake humility" and someone expressing their actual vulnerabilities through their art. However, I agree that the best artists tend to be more poetic/less explicit about their pain. I think this comes with maturity though as well. A lot of young artists haven't really been through that much. There are a lot of different types of art though, and I don't think every song needs to be an expression of pain. But I liked what Krystle said about how that tends to be a common theme among artists, that they feel compelled to create art and music out of their pain.
@guitaristssuck8979

@@samanthaxnicole being self-centered is the problem, it's really a sociocultural epidemic. Imagine to go to a local music night and hear songs all about that. Girl with an acoustic guitar talking about her breakup is a cliché, indie band sounding like million other bands is a cliché, we can go on forever. The mainstream will always shove girl/boy songs down people's throats, it's always been like that, the story is the same, the only thing that changes is the character, the face. The world doesn't need more songs, the world needs BETTER songs. Most artist, mainstream or local, are lazy, they don't wanna do the best music possible, the want the easy way; the fact they whine for support is utterly laughable. We are already at the point where there's more generic, formulaic, simplistic songs than masterpieces (even if a song doesn't need to be a total masterpiece). It all comes down to "what do you bring to the table" and "be a leader not a follower". We have access to all music and humanity culture since decades, the minimum one can expect from an artist is to have a decent music culture and use it for writing the best music possible. Obviously the market doesn't work like that way but, surprise surprise, prioritizing what's easier to sell made it cannibalistic, the whole industry destroyed itself.

Music through history has moved from being a cherished, physical, premium commodity, to current day, intangible, disposable entertainment for a generation of consumers with 45 second attention spans. Our lives today have so many avenues for entertainment, and music is no longer at the top of the entertainment chain. Even if you love music, the industry is so saturated with options that musicians, and a majority of music artists, are not seeing much ROI. The fact this artist made money touring is great, but it’s not that way for the majority of bands. Singular artists, perhaps, bands, not-so-much.

I think he should never turn regrets into limiting beliefs. Katy Perry did not write teenage dream, I don't think it offended God making the song, a lot of people made money, and lot of people loved the music. Here's the deal, you sign contracts with other people, they are not asking for your limiting beliefs, they are asking to be your partner, and they expect you to show up as best you can be, not as a barrel of sour grapes? Ok, so you learned your lessons, you grow out of it, don't throw up walls? So glad you are teaching this stuff so I don't rush into things. If I did "rush" into things you have to have a clear plan. So what you sing other people's songs, you want the audience, or not? Actors get caught up in this to, if someone invites you to do their song or movie, give it all you got because at the end of the day people will remember how you made them feel, not always the words you say? Maybe that is God's plan? Enjoy the channel.

The music industry at the top is criminal. Thats it. If you make money and you dont stand with them, you disappear. EXPOSURE is greatest hurdle for any artist to over. They now control all avenues outside of the top levels of this industry. On top of that, listeners have been trained to think music is free via the streaming services. For 1000 plays on these services you get maybe a dollar or two as the artist. Where as 20 years ago, thats was $10k to $20k in your pocket. The industry is controlled by criminals and if you don't play by their rules, you get disappeared. Especially if you stand against them like i do as they control all aspects of the industry. The only way out of this, is to get the listener to change their habits and good luck doing that. I tried to start my own streaming service for the artist when they first appeared and got thumped. I couldn't even get people to help me with the web design or anything like that as they knew that the industry was a monopoly and doing so would tarnish their ambitions in their own industries. And i know of others that have tried to do this that made it a step further than me that received "phone calls" to tell them to back off. The industry is criminal, controlled by criminals. And these criminals, if you follow the money, controlled much more than just the music industry. They have somewhat monopolised our entire world. THE ONLY way out is to change the listeners habits and doing that in near on impossible. Why would you pay $10 for a LP when you can listen to it for free?? The thing is that we really need to change this world now or we will be slaves for eternity. If we aren't already.

If you're using autotune for concerts you're robbing the audience of a genuine and unique experience. You want to tinker with it in the studio? Fine, play around with it there, but even then, music isn't suppose to be perfect. No-one is going to notice if something is slightly flat or sharp (unless it's super obvious). The quest for perfection is making the standards unrealistic. Embrace the flaws.

At the end about AI music. I design the prompt, then AI creates the sound. I pick the sound I to go with my lyrics. I cut out the sounds I don't like, then I keep what I like. Then I prompt again for the next bit of song. I do this and I create the song in 34 second clips, but mostly when i'm done cutting and editing, rewriting, editing, uploading, then prompting. I'm there editing for more than 8 hours. One song I created with AI took me way more then 16 hours of editing. Not mastering just editing. I enjoy the songs and people I know enjoy them, so that makes me happy. Do I feel like I created the song, yes, in a way. To me, AI is a tool. If I didn't do what I do, the AI would never create the song I want. So in a way I am the producer and AI is my band. I write all of the lyrics, I write the lyrics first then I prompt the AI, then I spend hours prompting for the perfect sound that I feel goes best with the lyrics I wrote, then I prompt for the perfect singer that I like the sound of. People like me that actually build the songs they want, I feel like i'm putting in effort to create it. Each song I design is mine, did I play the instruments or sing the song no, but without me it would have never been created in my design.

Well said, even with AI it can take weeks or even months to get the perfect lyrics with the perfect sound. AI is just another tool in the tool box... another musical instrument to be played! Of course, without AI it would take a full band and most likely months just to cut a demo ;)

@@ExFMercury Yea and untold amounts of money. But I will say atm AI still never replaces performances, it sounds kewl, but nothing like the heart and soul of a true vocalist. I don't mean auto tuned either. If your auto tuned you might as well just make your song in AI lol

Look I hate you keep bashing AI. I really enjoy your content, but be real. I saw a video of Wings of Pegasus. He was telling how voices where 'managed' by computers. We all Know that drums are produced by computers. So what's the diffrence with AI? Since the advancement of studio gear, to perfection the sound... I hate it, we are fooled. Even on live performances there is technology to support it all. Then singers get critisied for using this technology. It also does not brother me who wrote a good song. The problem is that at this Point it all sounds the same. And even radiostations are in this game. I hate what's on the radio right now. For me lyrics are important. And who or what writes the music for it. I actualy don't Care. If tomorrow a great rocksong is released and I like it, it Will be in my Spotify list. And I really don't Care if it's AI or not. As long as the words and the music are making magic, it's fine by me.

Musician, if anything worked for any independent musician in the last decade, Music would have changed! Can't say it any differently. You dont have any chance, no matters what you do. If you did we would have new music from new musicians, every week. We haven't had anything outside of corporate control! You THINK you know a way! But you dont. Or someone somewhere new would have a chance. The BIG THREE LABELS have the industry sewed up, and they are blocking you from everything but crumbs. 3 CEOs say no and you cant do anything . Refuse to oppose those 3, nothing for nobody ever! Ed Sheeran's "Divide" tour has made $736.7 million Adele will make $675,000 per Las Vegas Show K Perry's recent single, Dark Horse, album. and concert video made Universal $41 million. They spent 11.7 million to make and promote the single. Beyonce wraps her 56-date Renaissance Tour with an estimated $579 million revenue haul. Taylor Swift has become a billionaire. Justin Bieber will only release a new album if he gets 20 million Instagram likes. So is every musician in the world combined less talented than so few who make all the money! Support music for all not this!

God's purpose - give me a break. The guy has a great voice and can write songs, but he's probably written his last hit. God doesn't exist, it's real simple. People are mercenary scumbags. Odd that he believes deeply in god, but talks about monkey brains. Does a religious guy believe in evolution? Huh?

So you are saying someone who has trouble expressing their thoughts and turns to ai as a tool to do so has little or no skin in the game. People use tools everyday to accomplish tasks that were not possible without the tool. Stop acting like music is different.

I said this before you don’t know anything about the industry I have been apart of for 40 years he said what I said before it’s a business and they want to own the music they write so they have in-house writers inhouse producers it’s how the recouped all their losses from artist! If you’re an attorney you would know this! Especially dealing with labels ! I sign non disclosure deals deals and write for the biggest artist in the world! There is open letter about the business writers against artist google it will help you understand how the business is a fraud to artist and how they own most of you and how it’s done! lol who have you gotten signed that’s huge? And show us the contract? lol I think you added this to comment in because he was a huge deal and helps pander to views so you can make money as a creator? lol you may be music attorney but will bet you haven’t gotten any artist major label deals? You seem to have zero knowledge of how it works and if this gets deleted I know why? No offense to many bs people on KZbin with misinformation to profit!

First the bad news for all musicians. If you had a chance music would have chsnged in the last decade... Musicians, NOTHING WORKS NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO! Musicians give me your best case scenario for success that you can imagine - as if everything works out perfectly for you. Then I will show you how The Big Three Labels, Warner, Universal, Sony, that control the entire industry; will ruin it for you! WANT PROOF? There is no new types of music or new musicians on the charts and radio each week. No one-hit wonders, no instrumentals, no novelty songs, no regional hits, no new music cities; nothing new! Join the music revolution against them. Start your real career by sharing this! Let me start with these. They won't work: Win a national song contest. Have thousands follow you on Spotify. Have thousands follow you on KZbin. Have thousands follow you on TikTok Have thousands follow you on Facebook Have successful recordings on an indie label. Have success on Patreon. Win a grammy Sign with the Big Three Labels Have success on SoundCloud, ReverbNation, BandCamp. Tour, sell cd's, sell t-shirts.
