Esysman covers these types of super yacht things but he's just covering what potentially happened during the sinking. From video it appears to just vanish. He shows video of other sailing vessels hit by waterspouts that listed at 85° and righted themselves. This ship had a keel that was retracted into the hull at anchor because it would "clank" at harbor disturbing guest. This dramatically increased the center of gravity and not all the bulkhead doors were secured. It would have not sunk if on 2 of the 4 bulkheads were folloded. By the manufacturers specs.

You may be at the helm of a so-called “super yacht” but if you hit extreme weather at sea, including water spouts (tornadoes), your vessel may as well be made of paper because no matter it’s design or advanced safety features, your vessel is going to suffer damage & you or your passengers will get injured, no matter what precautions you take.

Perini and Navi do indeed build unsinkable yachts assuming they are operated as intended. They build the world`s finest ocean going yachts. The vessel is not at fault, the skipper caused it all on his own. The 240 foot mast did not break but it did provide extreme leverage because the counter balancing retractable keel was left up! Inexcusable. The yacht was on her side and hatches and cabin portholes were left open rather than rely on air con? The stern door was open too. The standard procedure in this situation is to simply abandon the anchor and motor away. The watch crew did not monitor the radar which is an important duty in an area known for sudden, fierce tempests at this time of year. The skipper made sure survived by leaving all aboard to their fate! He must remain aboard until last but took the coward`s way out. This is a clear dereliction of his duty for which he will pay dearly. He will definitely be charged and lose his ticket, his sailing days are over. Jail is likely for manslaughter or failure to act in a responsible manner. It is a shocking example of the worst seamanship ever displayed and proves he ought never have been a skipper at all. Anyone can sail in easy seas, it takes an extreme event like this to test whether a skipper is worth his title or not.

I'm not a sailor but, I have a couple of questions as a layman. 1) Wouldn't it be reasonably normal for some guests to have portholes and hatches open if the weather was calm and pleasant? 2) Why would the retractable keel be down if the vessel is not underway and is at anchor in what is probably a relatively shallow anchorage?

I guess a lot of people haven’t been on a super yacht I have and in windy conditions, you don’t think it’s going to do a 180 all of a sudden like a dinky boat. The crew was tying down all the stuff that’s flying off the boat, probably the lady with the baby was up because the baby was fussy and she’s not use to a boats movements. That ship was hit so hard it did the 180 and took on extreme water in 2 seconds in pitch black conditions inside the ship on its side they had no hope of getting out alive, sad.

Water spouts are not tornadoes until they hit land and are actually very common… I grew up in a house on the water and commonly saw them in the distance. Totally random to get hit on a boat because they rarely last long and are not wide. In daytime {at least on a power boat} we would easily avoid them… still very sad, very random, but very much a feasible disaster

The builder of the yacht believes the water proof glass doors were open between the outer cabin and inner cabin and when the ship tilted to that degree the water just flowed into the cabin . If you look at the mast you can see the lights on the mass survived the funnel so it was intact, but that when the ship tilted to that extreme, it just filled with water and that why it sunk so quickly.

Those ships are designed to be virtually unsinkable by design, with the caveate that you prepare for the potential danger. The ship can in extreme weather to be waterproofed but you have to close all access to the main deck. This apparently didn't happen as probably a result of their partying and ignoring the dangerous conditions they found themselves in. This was explained by the builders.
