Excellent closeups! Maybe I was in that Aerocalifornia DC-9/30 left seat taking off to maybe Hermosillo Culiacán Manzanillo Loreto La Paz Cabos? 24/7, night and day, rain or shine in all kinds of Wx!! Nice life Oh well! Year round from 1990-2008! Flew them into LAX, San Diego Lindbergh, PHX Sky Harbour apt, TUS INT apt! Only the very faintest shadow remains! Excellent DC-9 design every part of it, a joy to fly ..... sturdy and very well build, excellent aerodynamics....from Mc Donald Douglas Long Beach plant!

3:48 That DC-10-10 looks stunning.... man, I remember being just over 9 years old in 1999 [2 years after this video] - yes, I'm a youngin relatively speaking - what an amazing aircraft. Sat 4 rows before the 3L door and remember it all. *sigh* got lucky, able to fly on a lot of classic aircraft - and unique commercial aircraft - before their departure from U.S airline operations.

Almost forgot AA was still flying DC-10s in '97 - flew on one JFK-LAX, LAX-JFK a year after this was shot - to date my last DC-10 ride. ;(

The AA MD-11 at the end was the best, I don't think the MD-11 looks as good in any livery as AA's old chrome livery!

@sanchezv8, no Imperial is not where this spot is at. The nearest major intersection to this location is Aviation Blvd & West Century Blvd (near the Carl's Jr & Airport Hilton for reference). From there take Century westbound (toward the ocean) for maybe 1,500ft until you see International Rd, make a left and you're there. Thanks for subbing.

@loaferguy73 thanks for subbing, I used to go up there too and I will always remember the really low departures. I think the lowest I ever saw was a TWA L-1011 that seemed to just barely clear that hill. Good times!

@RyanBomar You are right Ryan, I would say from about 96-2000/1 ish was a great time for spotting. You had a good mix of th eolder generation aircraft mixed with the newer generation ones. I use to park on that hill close to the beach that overlooked the other runways at LAX to watch them take off right over my head!

@Pilot588: you can still go planespotting at Imperial Hill and the park near the Westchester In N' Out. Both are great sites. I don't know about this location.

KBurchfiel this spot has been inaccessible since 9/11. It was next to Kalitta Cargo, off Imperial and Aviation I believe. I remember spending the whole day there.

@RyanBomar Yes it was, the lowest I saw was a DL L1011 departure to Hawaii follwed by NW 747-200 to Narita. Both of there wheels were just starting to retract as they flew over me, later you could not park up there anymore and last time I past by it was blocked off.

Mmmm , I loved the smell of jet fuel early in the morning at gate 123 A! Late arrivals, down to foggy minimums! Lax app : Aerocalifornia, can you give me 250 knots to the OM? Early departures, turning hard left early in the climb to comply for noise abatement procedures! Been there seen that .... from early 90's -2008! In & Out Brings back Fond memories Aerocalifornia DC9 days ! Busy Busy! Thanx LAX for the memories!

They had many. They were heavily used on the Asian/Pacific routes out of PDX and LAX.
