Yeah struggling to keep a good mental is a real problem. It's important to remember you have good qualities, talents that not everyone has, and even if you don't believe you have them the only way to get them is consistently trying to find them. Thinking you are 'ordinary' ends the moment you keep climbing the mountain :D

It's easy to compare yourself to others and feel like you come up short. Always important to remember that you're your own person. You do things your own way and you move at your own pace. If you haven't reached the summit then that just means you have more room to grow.

After realizing how honest and straight forward Tanaka is, and how he never gives up and keeps chasing his goals no matter how humiliating or embarrassing they might be. Kanoka feels like she had her heart broken because Tanaka rejected her by saying "He has his heart set on someone else”. Her knowing Tanaka she realized he’s gonna chase after Kiyoko also without giving up.

@@jiro6748 it's also hinted that kiyoko was somewhat into him, even back in highschool. Just in this episode alone, the 2nd years said that tanaka would've stopped if kiyoko told him off. If kiyoko didn't see him that way at all, she would have told him stop as to not get his hopes up. She just rejects his upfront proposals like the marriage one, the one about spanking and the one about holding her things for her, but she never does fully reject his feelings. She never tells tanaka to stop liking her or to stop chasing after her, all she does is put the reigns on him. She probably planned to actually entertain him after they aren't part of the same club anymore, since it'll probably be awkward for the team if they had any form of romantic relationship.

It is common to Liberos receive the ball even though the ball is going right in front of other player. The reason is to give the spikers more time to get ready for an attack. I know that was hard to Tanaka, but I don't think that Noya was wrong, even if he knew that Tanaka was getting depressed. But yeah, what a good episode. Nice reaction, it is really funny see someone reacting with so much passion and feeling.

I feel the same. When I was watching the episode, I was like it is a bit obvious they are targeting Tanaka, so it's perfect for Noya to take it and Tanaka will be ready to smash the hell out of it. Hats off to Tanaka though, that mental strength is out of the world

Yes noya receiving it is the best option and tanaka wouldnt be able to receive it but it still makes tanaka even more depressed that he isnt able to do anything. From an outside view, we know it made sense for noya to receive it, but for tanaka? At that point of time he wanted to hope that he is not useless by thinking that hes able to receive it, but he didnt get the chance. Which makes him more depressed. Which will also led you thinking that your teammates doesnt trust you, for example tsuki passing it to asahi and noya receiving it. Although its logical from the outside view that they do that but it must be hard for tanaka still.

Haikyuu!! S1 Episode 20: When playing agianst Seijoh and Tanaka was cornered like he was in this episode. Coach Ukai thought "It’s not like he doesn’t make mistakes and he’s quick to let taunts get to him, but he’s the strongest-strongest after Azumane, and most importantly his ability to perform when he’s cornered doesn’t deteriorate. Not saying that everyone has real self doubts, most people have them every so often. People aren't comfortable admitting it because society deems such things as weak. If you can accept it, not denying or finding some excuse, it is already your first step. Yeah, you might feel like shit, it's ok, nobody is superman, you just have to get up and start working again. Small steps, focus on what you can control, exercise, clean your room, read, stand up straight, start learning that first chapter for the exam, whatever, focus on small things you have control over and those small things will build momentum...

So Noya stepping in for the receive in front of Tanaka may have seemed harsh, but from a storytelling perspective it was a great move. Tanaka is a spiker, and having his "comeback moment" on a receive, even from a very good serve, would have been a little lackluster. It sets it up to show how much mental perseverance Tanaka has, and it makes that final incredible cut spike that much more impactful.

Something about Tsukki here: he does have total faith in Tanaka. He tossed the ball to Asahi because he thought he had more chances to score back then, he didn’t worry that Tanaka could break or get a depressive moment over his abilities because he knows how mentally strong he is. He believes in him. That’s why he told him at the end that he couldn’t believe Tanaka could actually get depressed.

Here you can also appreciate Bokuto's reaction, his anger at seeing Tanaka's mistakes is reflected in us as spectators and in a certain way it could be said that Bokuto is the opposite of Tanaka because in that situation Bokuto would be mentally and emotionally broken for not to be able to get any achievement in the whole set, but Tanaka brings out his mental strength and stands firm getting that goal point to win the first set, for things like this is that I love this anime.

The question of do I belong can be so dangerous. Even though a lot of the plays like the tsukki pass and noya save were optimal in terms of winning the game, I really liked how the anime addresses the sports mentality. Momentum is one of those things that analytics cant quantify, and when you are feeling down, it really is common to start spiraling and interpreting everything going on negatively even though objectively it may not be the case. While teammates and the crowd can encourage you, only the individual is capable of breaking out and that takes courage. To go to such a dark place and find a light is the mark of someone who has courage, and really glad they picked Tanaka to display that idea. Definitely one of my favorite moments of the entire series overall.

This episode hit me straight in my soul. Tanaka is such a great character, and while he's not my favorite (that's Asahi), he embodies what so many of us struggle with--comparisons with other people. The part where he climbs the stairs was such a powerful image of resilience. No matter how fast or slow he scales the stairs, he continues to scale them. This is why I love Haikyuu! so much; the lessons this show imparts aren't just blocking formations, new setting styles, or flashy serves. The core of HQ is it's ability to strike at what makes us strive, fight, and grow. Thanks for your reaction!

"They don't even got no faith in him." That's the part that hits hardest for me. Tanaka just dropping his hand after the callout, realising his teammates are no longer passing to him. It's the ultimate confirmation of his self-doubt. Like he knew he wasn't doing well, but not being given the ball is a clear signal that everyone else knows he's not doing well either - it confirms his own feelings. It's a horrible realisation when you learn that other people see your flaws too.

Being like Tanaka and having a such great mental strength is really just admirable. Despite all the factors that might be agaisnt him in this complicated volleyball world is amazing. Tanaka is such a great player, because he is able to cheer him up and keep being determinated in his goals. Btw, I love your reactions so much

What’s fun looking back at this video is that I found out that Tanaka is Yuji Nishida’s favorite character too. For those who don’t know, Yuji Nishida is the outside hitter for team Japan’s national men’s volleyball team

I think Nishida is a opposite hitter. He normally attacks from the right side and he's a left handed hitter.

This episode shows us Tanaka's speciality: super sharp angle attacks. I like to compare Tanaka to Mateusz Mika from Poland, who is a beast when it comes to incredible angles of attack. Tanaka is still a second year, but that last spike was simply amazing.

Guys STOP explaining why Tsukki and Noya did what they did. Lax did not hold those situations against him and though he may not be a volleyball player I’m pretty sure he understands both situations were the best for the game. He’s only speaking from Tanaka’s perspective and those moments were into the show for a reason. It did their job and Lax reacted the way Tanaka was feeling when they happened... REGARDLESS if they were the right choices or not. Like we get it. Let us feel damn

I'm currently going through a heartbreak, and at 32, it's pretty damn hard. I was serious about it. My mood fluctuates up and down. It is always the worst when I wake up first thing in the morning. Perhaps, it's because I'm in a state where I'm not fully in control of my mind yet and it hit hard this morning. But that part where Tanaka talked himself into redemption at the end of the episode really lifted me. I actually copied it down and changed the words to my situation. And I plan to read it to myself whenever I look down because I don't think I have the time to look down like that either.

Sorry to hear that. Been there, really shitty situation. Always remember: Things might look pretty darn desperate, but if you stop moving you are going to lose. What helped me a lot is to clean my room, go to the gym or work out and listening to a few podcasts. Not saying your situation will change immediately, but trust me, it will get better. If you feel like shit again, accept it, don't deny it or brush it off because it will come back. I tried it to, putting those dark thoughts in box somewhere in my brain, those things will resurface and will hit even harder. Accept that not everything is going according to plan, accept that you aren't perfect. Nobody is. Just go out there, one baby step at a time and it will get better.
