I think honorable old men is enough to make anyone cry! This is solidly the best animated sports *anything*. While a lot of the manga details were cut for the movie, what we get in return is a very snappy, very "real" volleyball. Which is funny, because we get the best animated match, for the one game in all of Haikyu that I would say doesn't feel like a "match". It (and this movie in general) is a celebration of sportsmanship and the love of sports.

New here! I love your reaction and I’m gonna watch all your haikyu reactions now! There’s one thing I want everyone who didn’t see the manga to know🥹 25:11 before Hinata jumped high to hit the high middle set, Kenma thought “many people not good at spiking high sets, Hinata has always done fast attacks, I don’t think he can get used to it…” there’s another flashback in the manga: back in junior high, Hinata asking his friends that didn’t play volleyball-“please, just tossing it high would be good!” It gave me chills when I read that…wish they had spent just 5 more second for this🥺But the movie has been so amazing anyway. Although it is so short compared to all the games that took whole seasons, the whole movie is just so smooth and all the flashbacks and the emotions are just sooooo good😭Cried in the theater.

I genuinely love how Haikyuu portray the friendship these teams have and not make the “main team” the “good guys” and the others like some kind of “villains” because in the end this is a sport anime and no need to use these kind of tropes. Like every team feel real and friendly but nothing comes close to Karasuno and Nekuma's friendship and this movie felt like watching friends having fun against each other, mo grudges about losing. I remember watching this match in the manga and being so excited for both teams and even when it ended i didn’t feel sad about who lost and who won. This is all exciting but next match is… y'know

I'm glad I'm not the only one that teared up a bit like you did when Hinata finally got Kenma to admit that volleyball is fun. Also in terms of you thinking it was going to be a 5-set match instead of 3, most tournaments like this will only play 3-set matches in the early stages to keep everything relatively on schedule since they only span over a few days and this tournament hosts 50+ teams from the start. The 5-set format is usually saved for the championship match since it's usually the only game being played on the final day without having to worry about time constraints.
