Man, heartbreaking to lose those hours, but you won't have the frustration later with the door for years and years. Really nice work, it looks great with the pea gravel. It's always refreshing to see how folks overcome challenges wether they create them or environment induced. Thanks for sharing! Keep up the good content!

I admire your honest👍🏻 I know from personal experience how something simple like this can be overlooked. You done the right thing by ripping it out, if you didn't rip it out then every time you looked at the slabs it would have annoyed you forever 😁. That certainly deserves a subscription

The man (or woman) who never made a mistake, never made anything! Well done for showing the mistake so others can learn from it and well done for fixing it properly! If you would have taken the easy option and cut the door down then you would have run the risk of rodents in your workshop. Another great video 👍🏼

Hey! , do you have on your "To do list" a Wooden Garden Steps by any chance? :) I have a slope in the back of my garden and ends with a half meter posts. I am planning to do something with that area but first I need to put like a stair to go up. Looks simple, and I was thinking of doing it.

Worth the effort to relay 'em. It's not just the obstruction, the higher level on the outside would be a drainage problem waiting to happen. You've got a talent for presenting. But your lack of ego is your best quality, it means you're open learning and improvement. That in turn makes your vids trustworthy.

I used the method in this video for laying slabs on a full bed of mortar for my shed internal floor as I thought it would be more solid to take heavy loads from storage of tools etc, also bought a brick jointer to point the joints with a damp sand and cement mix and it worked really well. Was going to do it with just the sand base but thought about the other method for belt and braces! Thank you!

Great job and fair play for lifting them again and doing a proper job. There is another way to lay slabs aswell we do on site which is use sharp sand as your base on top of your hardcore screed it off level with a straight edge lay your slabs giving them a little tap to settle them....once laid mix a bucket up with half a bag of cement and half a bucket of water mix with a stick to create like a slurry...wet your slabs then pour it all over and brush so it covers and fills joints then get a hose and rinse off till slabs are clean.... that will wash the slurry under all the slabs and once gone off locks them all in solid and gives a solid layer underneath it takes 2 days to set properly then just point up 👍 much easier no mixing... twice as fast and in 10yrs ive never had to go back to a slabbed job done this way👍 your way is great also but maybe this will help in future with any other slabbing you might do.
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK

Sand "grouting" will really help with drainage as long as there are gaps in your mortar bed. We do that quite a bit in southern Indiana where we tend to get periodic torrential downpours.

Hi, The only problem with using silver sand is that the weeds will come up between the flags. But that will no happen straight away so you will have some time to enjoy your patio. Very well laid and you made it look easy.

Well done on getting it just as you wanted it! Laying slabs is so much work and so back-breaking isn't it? I came inside at 9.30pm tonight having laid a 2x1.5 slab shed base onto a sand/cement bed. It was harder than I thought it was going to be to get it all inline. Such a relief when it ends up ok! I can hardly walk now ;-)

Great video, nothing wrong with making mistakes, we all have. 😊 learning from them is what's important, no harm done in the end and a boss job, Looks great too. Did a massive fail only last week repairing a rear wheel bearing on my brothers Saab 9-5 to make access to the wheel bearing fixing nuts I removed the top and bottom control arms, putting it back together from under the car I was made up to finally tighten the last bolts up only to crawl out from under the car to discover I forgot to put the brake carrier dust shield on first before positioning the bearing, aaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh 😄😄😄😄 needless to say had to take it all apart and start again. Not nice, it was freezing last week when I did it, but I won't do that again. Lesson learned. 😉😉😉😉

You are absolutely my inspiration as I'm currently laying (or re-laying) stepstones in my front garden, and considering re-laying a patio in the back. Issue is, I'm about 30 years older than you are, so it will be slow going ;-). My question is regarding the sand you choose to put between the slabs and whether or not you've regretted it. I ask because one reason I'd like to re-lay the current patio area (aside from better siting) is because the sand between has failed to keep weeds out and so it's either a nightmare to remove them, or, as is usually the case, it's an eyesore. My thought is to lay the slabs on a good base but to do a sand/cement mortar between (dry, sweep, then light spray). What are your recommendations? I'll also ask what you think of concrete-block for edging. I thought placed on their sides such that one can fill the holes with soil would result in pretty strong side support once planted and the plants take root. Again, thoughts? I admire you hugely. You're very much a girl after my own heart!

Hi Vikkie. I've just been looking on BuildLand at these slabs, as I'm going to be laying a patio this summer. How have these slabs withstood the test of time?

I'd have cut a bit off the garage door. Seems like a lot less work and adding a cil on the ground would have solved the gap when the door was shut issue. Also cement mixer hire is really cheap and well worth it for the time and effort it saves. It's also fun to use the first time.

Hi, does the mortar base have to be sloping/fall away from house too or just do the fall with the cement?

Just jumping back to this video because I'm going to slab an old concrete yard at the back of my house and I needed a refresher. I'm amazed at how conscientious you are. I would have chopped an inch or two off the garage door. Who was that giant insect mixing mortar in a wheelbarrow?

Awwww what a shame ... all that hard work to do again, and in the rain :(. Its easy to overlook something, that in hindsight, should have been obvious but you can have peace of mind knowing you wont be the last person to have overlooked something before realising it. lol... at least you came clean and never blamed Hans :) Thanks also for the handy and comprehensive links to all the stuff... very handy. Take care.

I took one look at the stopper bit in the middle and assumed both pieces went in. Is it a rule that if the hinge is on the outside, it goes inwards? Well, I'll be checking every time I ever have to do this again now lol

Hi Vicky I've just finished laying my slabs and was wondering what the best way of pointing the slabs I'm torn between a dry or wet mix just wondered what your thoughts are thanks
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 6 жыл бұрын
I personally preferred the pointing technique in my front door patio video. You don't need much water at all and it solidified with a bit of light rain over a day or two. If your gaps are quite big, then perhaps wet mix may be better.

Just a wee tip personally i prefer mixing cement on a bit of wood like chipboard as it allows you to get right down to the bottom and you don't keep banging your shovel against the sides of the wheelbarrow. Just personal preference tho.

Why did you decide to use cement for this part but sand on the other part in your garden? I can't decide on which to use for my back garden!!
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 5 жыл бұрын
Only because I wanted to try the mortar method for the first time. You could do the sharp sand method if your slabs are thick enough, then point at the end with a mortar mix as it should prevent weeds. But if it's an area that's likely to get puddles, it won't drain. Hope that helps!

The Carpenter's Daughter Brilliant. Mine arrived this morning as Im halfway through laying mines down the garden runs out by a mile so the last run needs securing. Feel a bit more confident about them now as I hadn’t seen anyone on KZbin using them. Thank you! And keep up the great work
