Layout and Marking Stair Skirtboard

Hey there welcome to the channel in todays video I go over the details of how I layout stair skirting. This is done prior to installing the treads.

Easier way is to use a scrap block, mark your riser, mark your step, when both lines intersect making 90 degrees, that’s your cut out. Did this process in a couple minutes vs marking like you did, plus your risers and steps won’t always be level or plumb so using a scrap ensures each step will match your mark

With that technique.. Just sacrifice a framer's square and cut off the ends to exactly match your rise and the the the tread.. If they are a little off it will be obvious and you can just mark it off at the front of the lower trad and back soy you get the actual imperfections reflex ted on your skirt.. Just a thought..

Great video my man! I am a finish carpenter/contractor in Nor Cal I really do not do skirts and stairs that much ? Maybe every once in a while? Lots of doors, built ins, base, crown, ect.,. However I ask for a 3/4 to 7/8” space between stairs and wall of course framing like yours prevents it! I use a digital level to get my degree angle almost always 36to 40? The level sits off the nosing 2 3/4 or 3/8 can’t remember? And my plumb cut is an example 90 degrees minus 38 for angle 52 degree plumb cut. It’s a bear coming in behind someone like here who maybe was a handyman who built your stairs! Min riser should not be over 7.5 and tread 10” or else inspector fails it they are tough on stairs! I use Akibus bag and carry 2 squares 4” & 6” Martinez however I purchased their aluminum ones and they are great for figuring angles ect.,. Track Saw bar none Makita it’s a beast I hv both corded and battery. It takes a min to gather stuff I know! But 1 st thing I did was covert my garage into a shop! Big table saw small planer & jointer plus a nice router table for face frames! That way you mill it and charge for it ! Cuts overhead whereas milling is profit all shop building profit & write off ! Thanks for the comment. These stairs are all over the place the person who installed them didn’t adjust the stringers dead on so the risers aren’t consistent hopefully it won’t mess up my tread nosing reveal to much.

@@highertiercarpentry get yourself the Collins stair tread jig! Not much $40/50 use a 1x2 and attach the jig at each end (come in a pair). Then set it to each side of the wall and tighten so as to keep your setting as you lift off the tread! Then place it on your new stair tread material ! Then scribe and cut with your track saw! I like an 1 1/4 “ off tread nosing some 1”1/2 off nosing ? Then I use a 15 ga to set both tread and riser and screw in from the back if you can get there??? Big big if ? Otherwise I use trim screw that way it prevents movement overtime! Keep punching out videos there is not but a couple guys doing “FINISH CARPENTRY”! And they are successfully bend it towards for “PRO to PRO” and go deep in the weeds for newer ppl ! Blades , belt set up for crown, base wainscoting , ect! Towards pros !!! Looking forward to this !!

Hi, pal, easier method you can do is. Place your skirt board to the wall just like you did, let it go all the way down to the hallway floor till the tip touches the floor. Measure and cut a scrap block of wood that is the same height as the top tip of the end that is resting on the floor, scribe the floor and cut the line. Then place the board back into position when done then tack it into place. Get a 2 foot level or piece of timber and push it up tight to the face of the riser of the ground floor step and mark a line up to the top edge of the board, then repeat all the way up the board till you reach the last riser. Now repeat the process for the treads. Lay your level or timber flat to the top tread, mark across the underside of your level and repeat the process for the rest of the treads on your way back down. You will now have the template for your skirt board. This is a good way to do it also. It will save you time having to measure and mark each one. Give it a go.

I was drywalling a house to sell in Canada and after I finished PERFECTLY cutting the drywall in the staircase, my realtor told me it would look even better with wainscoting :/.... took me like no time to do that VS a million hours of measuring and wasting drywall cutouts. smh

Those are some pretty janky stairs to be honest… As a trim carpenter, I would’ve bid it EXTREMELY high, hoping not to get it, but if I did at least it would pay out

That's a waist of time.all you have to know is the height above the rake then measure from end to end.
