So this is like the LED version of 1000M halogen lights you see on many an SUV - used to have them. Okay for straight dark country roads when there's no other traffic but pretty useless anywhere else. Matrix LED headlights are better - always on full beam with dynamic masking and cornering lights like you're about to get on that ID.3 you're testing - I read the other day that those type of lights aren't approved in the US so perhaps that is why you can't get them on a Tesla.

From 2001 to 2018 I drove 65000 Km a year - mostly nighttime in Denmark - in 3 Mercedes Sprinters 315/318/316 CDI long wheelbase, delivering stuff for the same company. I kept the cars 5,5 years and then started a new leasing period with a new car. Nighttime driving in Denmark is a zigzag between wildlife deers - zize from Rabbits to Red Deer - the last Sprinter had Xeon lights with very bright light - turning night time into daytime - and while I normally would have between 0 and 2 collusions with deer in the "lifespan" of a car - the last Sprinter with the bright light killed 11 deers! (not counting cats, small dogs, and rabbits) Eleven. Why - My best guess is that the bright daylight like light - dos not scare the wildlife - they are not afraid of daylight - sometimes a little confused - yes - daylight came quick this night - but nothing to be scared of - and no need to get out of the way.. and smash... everybody - owners and car manufactures are very pleased with the new brighter light - and so is Bjørn.. but nobody seems to realize that the dead deers dont have a chance to learn their baby deers that quick daylight might be the last thing they see - before - smash..

Jesper Ohlin the safety radar in many cars will slow or stop the vehicle if it detects a stationary object in front of it. At the speed at which most drivers go on a highway, it is unlikely that in a dark night or foggy night that they would react in time regardless of the amount of light. However, unless it is raining, the safety radar will react much faster than a driver.
@pawwwlikk

After my last collision with an animal I just drive slower. I saved many animals this way. Bright light helps me to see them earlier and avoid collision. When I had car with matrix LED light (Opel / Vauxhall Ilntellilux) wide spreading the light, that was most comfortable and safe for me and safe for the wildlife. But if someone is driving faster because he sees more in the night because he has strong lights, only more collisions will be the result. So I think, this is not about the lights - it's about how fast we're driving. Best regards and hope no more collisions :)
@OZ6JO

@@pawwwlikk Please understand that I did not try to hit the deers - Only one af the 11 kills were a frontal collusion. The rest are deers that walk into houses and eat tulips and other flowers that peole have in driveways.. then when they (the deers) suddenly are aware of the car - they run - same way out as they came in - and right into the side af the van, going full speed.. usely they are knocken out and get a leg or two run over. Everytime that happens I stopped and called the national "sweisshund" service - a finemasked net of hunters with dogs that can track the animal - this service is free to call.

Would be cool if you also tested the lower priced Elite 12 model. (Right now at bilkomponenter, you can get Elite 18 with 13 500 lumens for 10 598,- or Elite 12 with 8100 lumen for just 5 576,- if you mount them yourself.) Also could be a good opportunity to comment on whether a LED bar is a good companion to the matrix lights on newer cars - it certainly can't work with auto high beam that keeps high beam always on and instead adjusts where it shines in order not to blind oncoming traffic...

@@Hannu9999 They can be useful outside of cities on twisty back roads! I live in a rural part of the UK and it's a lot of single lane roads with tight turns, so you're not going fast really! High beam combined with 'turning lights' would be great for my use case as the Model 3's lights have very little spread, it's almost impossible to see around sharp corners and street lights are basically unheard of here outside of cities it seems. :) I think it'd be a nice option for them to add at least, and it's totally possible to do with an OTA software update. Obviously not useful for all situations, a light bar will be far brighter!

Very good idea, but please keep in mind a good balance between the main beam and dipped beam. Big lights are fine, if you drive in The North, but the further south you drive, the less use you find for them.

Nope. In reality, light bars are very good for driving in dark. But this Lazer bar is just one of those typical designs with not so useful beam shape. Too tall round beam means you waste a lot of light in the tree tops and have to dip early for oncoming traffic. That's why the flat & wide beam works much better for those of us who drive in the dark. We are in minority, but we are here.

@@bjornolsson9383 thanks, Björn, much appreciated! I see your point now as I found a better video to show the same panel on my favourite Finnish site Jussinmäki.net and I am now convinced of the merits of this panel. Pity the road picked for this video is largely just curves and motorway between crash barriers that limit the visibility. It's hard to see the real width of the beam with hardly any reference outside the road. And I guess we are aiming at the same thing, which is a wide beam like good fog light, but 300+ meters long, right? I won't replace my X-Vision Genesis quite yet, but I keep this Lazer Elite in mind for the future (as my wife's car with a pair of Lazer Triple-R's is due for change soon). One of the advantages is the compact design that makes it easier to hide in the grille (my huge X-Vision bar is ugly as it's just standing on the front bumper. But it's still less ugly than bloody remains of reindeer on the bonnet and wind screen)

@@Philip-kc2et I agree. Matrix light is the best means to mitigate the obvious limitations of powerful headlights. The problem is that most of those adaptive matrix lights are designed for built-up areas and they are lacking the power needed in rural areas and wintery conditions. Björn's video is shot in easy conditions. Double or treble the stopping distance on snow and ice, add reindeers on the road and you see why those of us living here need a bit more light than folks driving in motorways. There seems to be more than one correct answer to this question. I know for fact that it is perfectly legal (at least) in NO, SE and FI. Mandatory annual check-up just verifies proper installation and the grand total of all installed main beams. I took the latest S-Class as an example, as it is carefully engineered to use up the whole quota allowed for single car to put as much light in front of the car as legally possible. Just like Björn's car, my one also left the factory with less powerful lights, so we have just taken our LEGAL RIGHT to add what the factory had forgotten. Park our cars next to new S, walk away 200 - 300 meters and you'll see pretty much the same readings on your lux meter in front of all three cars. In the Nordic countries all three are legal, further south just one. This was a surprise for me as well, as I had thought common EU directives (such as car type approval requirements) means common rules, but apparently that is not the case.

I imagine that will do wonders for AP performance in the dark too. :) Now to install two or three of them? ;) Would it be handy to have the bar enable/disable with e.g. 2 quick taps forward on the stalk? Like you normally do once to enable/disable auto high-beam? It would also be nice to have the end 20% aiming into corners and pick up the CAN-bus feed for the steering position (or yaw change or whatever from the IMU) and turn those on and off accordingly. I'd want those features for the incredibly high 1100 Euros (if my calculations are right) I was expecting more like 300 for light + the ALC extra, the price of which is reasonable. If it included fitting, maybe.

Matthias the disadvantage with a powerful ledbar is that you have to dim down much earlier than without, if you have adaptive lights which will light up everywhere but the oncoming traffic you will see more of the side of the road. Of course if you never meet traffic and dont mind adding a ledbar to the car its more for you.
@matthiasotto4156
@matthiasotto4156 4 жыл бұрын
@@salamandur I agree. I think this is really useful when you're living in a rural area, lots of land between houses, wooden area and so on. There this much power can be very useful (more useful than a Model 3 maybe ;)). But nothing I would use on a highway or any street with a chance of oncoming traffic.
@salamandur
@salamandur 4 жыл бұрын
Mads Randen Of course if you look only at light output. However, you will need to dim down earlier, and if you have poor lowbeam its almost like going blind. I have xenon + ledbar on my car at work, when I meet traffic I need to dim down really early so they dont freak out and flash me.. And when I do I cant almost see anything. Would rather have great adaptive led’s which black out oncoming traffic while still light up the side of the road.

That's weird timing, I just bought a Stedi ST1K 21.5" LED lightbar for my Model S for my winter trip to Norway. It is specifically ECE approved (E-marked) for legal use across Europe. I'm going to be triggering the LED with the high beam with a CANM8 CANNECT HIGHBEAM, getting the CANBUS signal from the OBD2 port through a switched OBD2 extension cable (cheapest switched OBD2 extension thing off Amazon) so I can still turn it off completely from inside the cabin. The Stedi wiring kit does come with a physical switch for this too, but it's round and lights up red when on so not really mountable in a Tesla (I'll be bypassing that switch).

Even though this Lazer panel is not my favolurite choice, there is no reason why it would not be used also in EU, depending on the standard lights of the car it is bolted on. ECE approved and ref. 45, so it is perfectly legal on quite many cars.
@whuzzzup
@whuzzzup 4 жыл бұрын
They are indeed illegal in Germany (§52 StVZO) but, StVZO applies to cars registered in Germany. If you are from an EU country or some country that has some special contracts with the EU (no idea if Norway has this), then you are allowed to drive in Germany (§20 FZV) - as long as safety standards are met (there are court rulings about this). Not really sure if a light bar meets those standards. So tl;dr: It's complicated but since you won't use them on the Autobahn but instead in the middle of nowhere during night, nobody will notice most likely during your stay in Germany.

So what's the big deal? As you can see, Lazer suffers from the "round tybe" light pattern that is so typical for badly designed LED lights. Tree tops are well illuminated but the beam is not that impressive on road sides. I am one of those who need main beam for winter driving, and based on this video, I am happy to keep X-Vision Genesis. For those who prefer cool white colour temperature, Optibeam Commander is the same panel with different colour temperature.
