Toured the Montreal Botanical Garden last week. They had a large food garden with a variety of 'maters, peppers, corn, cabbage, celery, cucumbers, lettuce, onions, etc. The food garden encompassed about 2 acres. All food grown is donated to food insecure regions of Montreal. If all y'all are in Montreal, then the Botanical Gardens are well worth the visit.

We have a mixed bag of figs here in Maryland. Some in pots, some in ground. At one time i had about 75 all in pots that ended up being a real pain to move inside in the garage during Winter & back out in Spring. I’m jealous of Lazy Dog’s rows & irrigation system.

My neighbor got tired of losing his fruit trees to the cold, we've had some real cold weather late in the winter the last few years. So he planted all of his fruit trees in 35 gallon pots. He has a set up so he can move them in the barn with a tractor. We'll see how that works out in time.

I just planted a few figs this spring. I got them because they are delicious and supposedly tolerant of poor soil and dry conditions. At first i only hooked up half of them to drip irrigation and the other half i tried hand watering. It's very dry here and my soil is very sandy. The half that was hand watered didn't grow and the existing leaves started getting rust and dying. The others being automatically watered were darker green, bushy and healthy. Once i fitted them with drippers the rest started putting on fresh growth after just a few weeks. The Ge Neri has been very finicky since planting. It keeps getting shocked, I planted it in a difficult place. I hope i get to try some of those big juicy fruits next year. I'm loving the huge pretty leaves of the Conadria. Big as my head, they've got to be twice the size of the other varieties i have.

2:16 I just moved from a place with sandy soil to one with clay soil. Actually the place with sandy soil is still on the market, so I have a garden at both locations and can compare. Both have had a rather wet summer, but the new place with clay soil is bordering on waterlogged, while the old place with sandy soil has moist soil thanks to all the rain, but definitely well drained and nowhere close to waterlogged, and feels like it wouldn't take much for it to start turning dry. Actually on the edges of some raised beds, it is dry. Those raised bed edges at the old (sandy) place seem to be favorites of Mediterranean type plants like sage. The sandy soil doesn't seem to make a huge difference for plants like tomatoes and squash that tend to have deep root to get them through slight dry periods (as long as it's not a serious drought), but the shallow rooted plants like lettuce, radish and peas seem to do much better at the clay soil place (maybe it's also due to temperatures being a few degrees cooler though).

23 years ago when we bought our house our friends got us a Turkey Fig as a house warming gift. We planted it in the planter bed area on the south side of the house. North Carolina Red Clay is Prevalent along with brick and debris from the construction of the house (1984). when we had the A/C heat pump installed a few weeks later, the A/C installer offered to run the condensate drain line right to the root ball of the tree..... i too being young and not greenthumish, thought it was a wonderful idea.... This tree is amazing!!!! Cut it to the ground every 2 years and it will grow back taller than my house..... This fig seems to LOVE water!!!!

I recently ordered a Fignomenal dwarf fig tree. I’m going to plant it in a pot after watching your video. I’ve planted Alma, Celeste, Turkey, and some unnamed white fig, but they all would die back during the winter and grow back in the spring but the figs never matured and fell off the plant. Hopefully, this dwarf gig will do better than the previous varieties I’ve tried to grow.

Excellent video! I really appreciate the clarification on soil types. So many take a snippet off YT or other places and don’t research the whole story. Zone, location, soil, elevations, etc all make impacts. Another reason we stress local info so much.

The big #1 reason for some folks to grow figs in pots is Root Knot Nematodes. In Florida’s sandy soil, the RKN kills figs. I’ve lost so so many different plants to RKN even with solarization, crop rotation, and cover crops. Figs are highly sensitive to RKN. If I didn’t grow my figs in pots, I wouldn’t be able to have figs at all. Love your channel and tips. Thanks for all the great informative content. I’ve learned lots!

I bought three little figs from Lidl supermarket in the Highlands of Scotland a year ago, because they remind me of the huge fig trees in Greece (also to rescue them). I put them all together in one deep pot and keep them at the window of my 2nd floor flat where they get direct sun in summer, when the sun clears the buildings across the street. They've doubled in size, have huge leaves, and seem to love MiracleGro. Such a delight to look at! Thnak you for your precise videos.

Could you suggest a couple of varieties that you have in stock that would stay on the smaller side/be pot friendly in North Atlanta zone 7A/B? Thanks so much for a great video!

The great thing about figs is that you can prune them to whatever size you need them to be. And often times, pruning promotes more new growth and more figs! I'd recommend White Marseilles for your location. It's relatively cold hardy for a fig and is a fast grower.

Hi again, we have a low spot on our property where water will sort of collect and I was looking for something to put there and just really by accident planted a little Brown Turkey fig there and it would be doing a lot better if the guy would quit weedeating the leaves off of it but now that I know that I think I'll plant some more down there...and put down some drip irrigation just in case. 👍👍 Do you have any recommendations? We're in Zone 7.
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
I think the fig tree down there is a good idea. It might help soak up some of the excess water and keep it from getting too soggy down there.

Travis, interesting. Good reason, cold snaps, for growing in a pot especially when young. Be really interesting to know how they do for how long when it gets older. That might be a bit of a chore to transplant when it needs it and keeping the root ball under control. I've looked threw your fig trees for sale and though I'd like to have one, remembering the huge tree in my favorite aunt Kat's back yard when I was a kid. One question. Are fig trees grafted, like orange trees? Maybe two questions. What's your favorite fig? Thanks bud. Keepu'm commin.

They're not grafted, although some people do graft them. Ours are propagated from cuttings in our orchard. Conadria is my favorite variety.

Got a general container question for you. How do you stop the water from flowing down the side of the container? Often I find the soil gets sucked inwards, especially if it's a bit dry, and then there's a gap between the edge of the container, and the edge of the container soil, and whenever I water it, the water runs down the edge and out the bottom of the container instead of through/into the soil. And then the soil gets even more hydrophobic and becomes even harder to water...
@markb8954 Жыл бұрын
Drop the entire pot in a large bucket and full saturate. You might need to repot your plant and add better soil.
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
We use a Dramm nozzle in our greenhouse that absolutely soaks stuff. Might want to try something like that.
@memph7610 Жыл бұрын
@@LazyDogFarm So the idea from both of you is to just get it really wet however you can to counter the hydrophobic-ness. Alright, I'll try that. Maybe add a little soil on the edges so that it can filter into the gap.

Travis this is not a fig question. I have Jamila okra plants 3 foot tall, but they are not producing any okra Blume any advice. Stalks are 1" diameter in size. I live in mid-state SC.

Could be that the soil is too fertile. I've seen that happen with some of the heirloom varieties. That's why I stopped using any fertilizer at all on our okree unless it starts looking really pitiful.

I haven't noticed any nematode issues on ours. Not sure how to control them in pots, but we mostly use ProMix when propagating ours and then add a little mushroom compost to promote good biology.

Growing figs in pots has at least one Achilles heel. My south Louisiana heat, we’ve been experiencing triple digit temps going on two months now. I’ve lost three of the 20 or so varieties I got from Cajun B this past spring. The roots literally cooked. My solution for some was to move them to full shade, for others I buried the pot in ground and a few I went ahead and planted. Fortunately the ones I lost weren’t top tier figs. I was wondering why he had all his potted figs that he sells sitting in the shade next to his shed. I probably should have asked. lol
