I started using wax on my cuttings 2 years ago. I use bees wax instead of paraffin wax because it’s organic and paraffin wax in its melted state releases harmful chemicals into the air. I don’t have a wax melter like what you have but now I know what I want to get for the next season! I just use a torch on top of the block and dip the cut ends into it. I put wax on both ends to hold the moisture until I’m ready to propagate. I just leave a little extra branching on the rooting side so when I’m ready to propagate I start off with a fresh clean cut. Great video and nice looking orchard!

Great video! I was recently at a Dutch oven gathering and one of the speakers said he finds paraffin wax at estate sales relatively cheap. He uses them for fire starters but maybe someone here may want to keep their eye out if they go to estate sales and save some money. I don't know if other wax has chemicals in it that would hurt the cuttings but for a few cents it might be worth it to try.

I used melted soy wax to seal the top cut ends for the handful of blackberry cuttings I did recently. Since it's a softer wax and melts at a much lower temperature than paraffin, it wouldn't be as hot on the cuttings, and would be a lot easier if it gets spilled on skin.

towards the end of winter but still winter is good. the leaf buds will not pop out and so the energies will be spent for root formation. scouring? tis the nodes/knots (not the space between them or internodes) is what one scours because the cells in that area is where roots tend to develop - so best to cut not too far below the node and 2 nodes into the ground would be ideal. i am stunned that such a small role of wax tape - i can sell that for 5 dollars hahahaa. wax dipping is a nice experience actually. sand, particularly large-grain sand, as part of the potting mix is great....blessings

This is a great video, thanks for the heads up on wax. The tape was expensive, but this year I heated up a candle on the stove that was still in the jar used that to seal the cut ends. I was surprised how far the wax goes. One candle is going to last me a few years.

Moving home would be difficult, when you know your garden and put the work into building them to have a food source and educational base, now orchids like the figs. Buying a neighboring property is ideal if available allowing you to use their home or rebuild a new home. You can ultimately rebuild or extend your own home where your family is currently living.😊

We considered that option, but the land owners around us don't want to sell. Home is where you make it. With a little sweat equity, I can easily duplicate this setup somewhere else.

Maybe I'll try to propagate the mystery fig in my backyard. It makes a large dark purple fig that I haven't been able to try yet as I was gifted the cutting last year and it's been moved twice so no figs yet. The friend that gave it to me told me it makes a large dark purple fig and gave me a small jar of the preserves she had made from her tree my cutting came from. I've not pruned it at all but I think I will once it goes dormant. I'm not a fig expert by any means because my family always had the brown turkey fig only. I did have some figs in Malta/Gozo that were huge and I could peel them like a banana and was the best fig I've ever tasted, but since I'd only had the brown turkey I didn't have a lot to compare it to.

Thank you for sharing the information in the video. If I follow all the steps mentioned, including green wood cuttings, how long can I expect a good portion of a tray to start rooting? Hey, I have to say that I love your videos, especially the shorts. They have helped me a ton. 😊 I'm going to use candle wax to seal the ends of the cuttings. What about the little buds and sprouts that will be below the soil, should I pinch them off? Thanks!

@JohnDeWeese-lq4pf Жыл бұрын
I'm in North Carolina, and I found Hardy Chicago (better than a Brown Turkey) has done well the years we get a full week or two of frost and freezing temps. BUT, you're gonna have to mound the trees roots with leaves or straw/hay/or some kind of tree blanket. The frost may actually help by "self-pruning" your growth. Figs grow on new growth. The other thing is to plant (in ground) a tree that fruits EARLY. Travis has Black Malta, or "Malta" fig which was MY earliest tree (JUNE!) AND we had a late frost, so it came back super fast and the fruit was a delicious fig. I would try that.

My dad passed away a couple years ago and while I was walking around his property I came across a fig tree. How can I find out what kind it is? Very tough to identify a variety because there are so many. Most of the older trees around here are either Brown Turkey or Celeste because that was all that was sold or planted years ago.

Anyway, if you would be willing to let me send you a couple of cuttings and see what kind of fruit it bore or maybe I could take it to the University of Florida. They might be able to tell me. I'm sorry to hear about your dad's passing. Discovering his fig tree must be a special connection to his memory. To identify the fig variety, you could look at characteristics like the leaf shape, fruit size, color, and taste. Local gardening clubs, nurseries, or agricultural extension offices can be great resources for help. Additionally, there are gardening forums and online communities where you can share photos and get input from other fig enthusiasts. It's a beautiful way to continue your dad's gardening legacy. 🌳🌿

Question: I’m new to rooting fig cuttings . Recently I rooted six cuttings successfully and the have Growth with new stems and leaves. They are rooted in pro mix bagged soil in one quart containers. My question is how often should these cuttings be watered and how much water ?

Is there any advantage to starting figs in the smaller pots ? I am sure the re-potting to the "shipping pots" is a significant task adding to the expense of production ... thoughts ? or, is it just a "space issue" ?
@LazyDogFarm21 күн бұрын
Starting in the 2.5" pots saves space, watering time, and soil. Not every cutting makes it, so we don't waste a bunch of soil on those when we start them in the 2.5" pots. We also use a different soil for the larger pots -- one that is chunkier and less expensive than the ProMix. So yes, it does add to the production cost. But it's worth it IMO.
