I dehydrate all the peppers (bell, sweet banana, jalapeño, habanero, cayenne, ghost and Carolina reapers) then grind up a nice mix of them all to make crushed peppers. The cool thing is you can control the heat by using whatever ratio of sweet peppers versus hot peppers to suit your taste. I also freeze some habanero and ghost peppers for using in chili over the winter. I just drop a whole pepper in the pot so you get the flavor without all the heat.

Those are beautiful but totally out of most peoples price range. My neighbor bought painted ( both sides) metal roofing and built a beautiful raised bed maze. Over the years I have thought about using corrugated metal but according to the County extension unless it’s fully painted it will emit zinc fumes which are not good for plants or people. I’m glad to see there’s companies out there that are doing it right. But I like the metal roofing idea it’s much more cost-effective for me when I get so old I can’t use my Hoss plow and drip tape in ground rows anymore. Raised beds are a real option when my back fully gives out! Thanks again for a great teaching video.

I put heavy duty nursery-grade ground cover under my raised beds. SOOOOOO awesome. I have not weed-eated or even weeded the garden since Spring. The grass will be going bonkers around those beds if you don't. The stuff is about $90 per every 4' x 300' roll on Amazon last I checked. Same goes for drip irrigation. Just flip a switch, set an alarm for an hour on the phone, and walk away. The time saved each season is insane.

One helpful tip for keeping your compost fertile longer, is by adding pieces of Bio char to soak for a week or two in some of that compost worm casting tea then pour it into the middle layer of soil, leaving soaked chunks of the Bio char whole and spreading it around evenly in that layer! The Bio char now is a microbe hotel and fertilizer storehouses which get will make your beds thrive, regular fertigating on the top of the soil will recharge them over time as they get depleted of nutrients! Yes Bio Char by itself can rob your Gardens of nutrients, but not if the Bio Char is saturated full of Compost Tea, then the Microbes will break down and distribute the nutrients stored in the Char and feed your plants roots! Another helpful tip to keep them microbes thriving, is to keep the top of the beds covered with a thin layer of Peat Moss on the Top to aid in keeping the soil cool in the summer months! Happy Growing! I just know you and Brook are going to love those raised beds!

Trav, As you may know, I do a lot of container gardening. Now I'm adding some raised beds like yours. Would it be a good idea to place a tarp under the raised beds and containers, and add a deep layer of mulch for the walkways? How long would a tarp last on the ground, covered with mulch and gardening containers? In retrospect do you think that would help your situation, or have you had any weed issues? Trying to figure out a way to keep weeds out of the walkways FOR GOOD. Or, instead of a tarp, what about some really good weed cloth? Thanks, alan
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
I haven't had any real significant issues with weed pressure between mine. But that has a lot to do with the fact that this was an established in-ground garden plot (with minimal weed pressure) prior to adding the raised beds here. The plastic with a heavy mulch layer on top may work. But I've also seen nutgrass and bermudagrass grow right through that stuff.

The plumbing looks neat...BUT...no way I'd put PE tubing with compression fittings underneath the beds. If (and we know I mean "when") they leak or pull apart, you'll have a rough time repairing them. Better to trench them in along, and outside of, the beds. Having tubing going over the top edge won't be quite as slick and cool as coming up through the bed's soil, but it'll be much more repairable.
