Just an old timers trick to encourage branching without cutting the tips of the limb is to take a sharp knife or razor knife and press it into the bark all the way around the limb just above where you want it to branch out this will cause it to branch out and the wound will heal perfectly fine and keep growing !! Try it !! This works on the trunk as well just press the blade into the bark directly above a bud that you want to cause branch out from the trunk if you need a branch in that location !!

Thanks for the tip! Might have to try that on one!

I defoliated my young fig trees and wrapped them yesterday. We're supposed to hit 22 tonight. We haven't had a killing frost yet to zap the leaves off.

You’ve given me courage. Mine are still fully leafed out. 36 tonight, so maybe I can trim later this week. Blessings!

Great video thank you.... you shipped me a fig tree several months ago and it was lost in the mail... you replaced the tree for me and 6 weeks later you received the tree that was lost in the mail back. You said you may plant it to see if it would make it after spending 6 weeks in a box with no food or water...... Did you plant it? What does it look like? Thanks from Orlando!!!!

It's in the greenhouse and it looks great. I'll probably wait until next spring to plant it.

Thank you for this explanation. I think I'm getting more courageous when pruning figs every year.

I have all of my first year trees trained to a single stem. Once they go dormant I will cut them around 30" to encourage the side branching. Thanks

We can get very very cold here in central Louisiana...like low single digits...so I made my Brown Turkey trees grow horizontal branches low near the ground in a spider pattern. They have trunks too and vertical growth but if we get a bad freeze every few years I can at least cover some of the big low branches with deep pine straw, blankets, then a tarp or 2, and save enough of the tree to allow it to recover quicker even if the higher branches freeze...hopefully. I saw your mulberry video and I planted dwarf everbearing types between and around my six (so far) fig trees to keep the birds busy. I have 4 new cheap fig trees (I fell for a "deal" on "Celeste" trees!) that are growing vertical branches and I think they`re Violette de Bordeaux or Magnolia but I won`t know until they fruit next year. They may be male trees too. I`m trying to decide on 2 more trees to get before spring. I may just get one more fig variety and plant big blackberries for wine. If the 4 new trees are a bad variety for here I`ll pull them up by the roots with a pickup and start over.

Thank you so much for this video! I have someone I want to mail cuttings to who lives in Canada. Any tips on how I should package them?
@LazyDogFarm28 күн бұрын
No idea on how you can package them and get them across the border.

I let a couple of my pear trees get too big before I pruned them this year. Had to prop an extension ladder against them to reach the tops which wasn't good.

I wasn’t sure how to contact you except through YT, but if I order Bravo cabbage or Green Magic broccoli, would I still be able to plant them next fall & expect them to produce since they are hybrid seeds? Thanks
@LazyDogFarmАй бұрын
Yes, they should still be fine and viable.

What causes the leaves to get brown spots, then turn yellow, and finally fall off? I noticed that some of yours look this way but not nearly as bad as mine. Any ideas? Will it get better over the winter?
@LazyDogFarmАй бұрын
It's just rust -- a product of our hot and humid climate. It causes the leaves to fall off, but they quickly make new ones and new figs. Doesn't really hurt the trees.

I'm hoping my potted fig tree will survive tonight's freeze, it's much too heavy to bring indoors. I have it in a pretty sheltered place.

mine die all the way back every winter because we get so cold so I have no choice but to let my spread out unless you got a suggestion

Unless you cover them and try to save some of that growth, that's really your only option.
