Hey Travis, I was married to a Brit whose parents lived in Malta/Gozo and their neighbor brought us a large bowl of figs and I assume it was Malta figs. Those figs were huge, I kid you not, I've never seen figs that big. I ate a couple of them and they peeled like a banana. That was definitely a first for me and almost every house had the same fig trees and the figs were big, but that neighbor could have won awards with his figs. I was so tempted to smuggle a sprout through security, but I didn't . I think he fertilized his tree with sheep dung, but don't hold me to that, I assume it because his other neighbor had several sheep she shut in a shed at night and I believe he cleaned the shed ever so often for her as she was elderly. She led them every day to a small paddock to graze after she milked them, yes they were bred for meat and milk. Those figs still amaze me when I think of them. As big as a lemon, no joke.

same, after a few seasons i managed to collect almost all the ones he has for sale, we lost a couple which hurts but following his methods we have a few cuttings of the others. Had our first Green Berry flavored fig, not sure which variety because we got this from someone else, but it was amazing and still green so cool.

Thanks Travis. I just picked about 100 figs from a vigorous green gold fig. Jnknown variety. It was given to me by someone who dug it up from a house before it was sold. In 10 years not a yellow or brown leaf and never had rust.
@JohnDeWeese-lq4pf
@JohnDeWeese-lq4pf 5 ай бұрын
There are a few fig varieties that are very "rust" resistant (I've seen it skip my Lyndhurst White, & LSU Scott's Black, etc) BUT Rust tends to be a high heat, high humidity problem of mostly Southern fig tree growers. If you live in high humidity-high heat, you will deal with rust. (Just like fig Mosaic virus. If you grow fig trees you're gonna get it sooner or later.) Rust actually has NO affect on fig production. (According to some LSU studies). There are other trees (Maple, Sweet gum, and a few oaks) that show some "rust" production and leaf loss. The good news is the fig trees usually rebound in less than a month to vigorous new green growth. Your next year's production is usually not affected. Rust doesn't normally kill fig trees. But improper watering may. Be consistent in watering in the mornings. Container fig trees need daily watering. Not much, but the plastic pots tend to become hydrophobic and the water runs right through the pots. Don't spray the leaves of trees with water. That Coop Poop Travis talks about is the best all around fertilizer I've used. Good luck!

Travis have you tried Panache aka Tiger Fig? It’s a relatively common variety but of all the figs I have, and I have quite a few dark berry varieties, it’s my absolute favorite. A ripe one is like eating a spoonful of raspberry and strawberry mixed jam, they’re absolutely delicious. I typically won’t give any one variety more than 2 trees of space in my orchard but I have 4 Panache trees because they’re so good.

Good to hear! I have one that’s been in ground for two years and is doing great…other than only having held one bird-pecked fig to ripeness so far! Maybe because it’s young, maybe because it gets more shade than my other trees, maybe being closest to ground squirrel burrows so they’ve attacked that one most. Dunno, but glad to hear it’s worth the wait!

@@lsmckinn6349 Try planting a healthy cutting from the fig tree. Sometimes a cutting makes more figs than the tree it came from. Fig trees are weird. Also try fertilizing the tree with potassium or wood ashes. Get a soil test if you can. Something is missing or out of balance if you got no figs.

Celeste Fig trees can take a bit longer than others. Don`t get frustrated when it drops lots of figs because they do this too. Once they get established (in the ground) they can produce buckets of fruit.

Hi Travis. I just harvested my first figs ever, and they were delicious. They were from my Brown Turkey trees. I'm growing in containers because I wasn't sure if I was going to like them and didn't want to put them in the grown until I knew for sure. I'm definitely going to put them in the ground. I'm in Georgia zone 8b. When should I plant them in the ground? They are about 5 feet tall and have hard brown wood already. I'm going 5o check out your website to see if you have any of those berry type figs available.Thanks for sharing.
@baneverything5580
@baneverything5580 Ай бұрын
Brown Turkey is cold hardy once established well. You can put them in the ground at any time in the growing season but try to protect the tree from freezes in the first 2 years. It will get HUGE very fast in your zone. Mulch it with your grass clippings, rotting branches, leaves, pine straw, garden waste and cardboard to protect the shallow roots and as these become compost they feed the tree. Urine can help fertilize it too. I pee around my trees. Ha!

It would take a change in the Arizona regulations. They currently require each shipment to have a pretty rigorous phytosanitary test. Same thing with California.

Hey Travis… we have a turkey fig about 1-1/2 to 2 years old. Beautiful big green leaves and growing like a weed but no figs! Gets full sun all morning but more shade in the afternoon. Could the shade be stopping the figs? I live in the desert of Arizona so it’s gets pretty hot here. Our other fig… Miss figgy is loaded with figs and it’s right next to the turkey.

Why do my figs stall growth at a quarter size?
@JohnDeWeese-lq4pf
@JohnDeWeese-lq4pf 5 ай бұрын
So some of this may be due to what variety fig you are growing. Some figs are small (like celeste). Some, like LSU Gold are huge honey figs. I got my best results this year by using a good fertilizer 1 cup (Coop Poop) around the base of every tree in February (I'm in NC Zone 8A). Followed up by another in March and another in April. Usually first week of each month. You need to be consistent in watering. In ground trees need water every three or four days. More if you get record heat! Container trees are a daily 15 minute watering, You can do everything right, and then get 3 days of 100 + heat and high humidity, and some trees will drop fruit. My LSU Champaign did that! It happens. Nothing you can do about it. Do you normally get two crops (Spring and Fall?) on the same tree? I have trees I get a crop in June to early July, and then the majority of fig production is August to November. Depending on the cultivar. It would be good to know what fig tree you are growing. What your Grow Zone is. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I wore a hat like that once (it was stolen immediately) here in Louisiana and it was the first time the cashier in a store ever said "Have a nice day sir!" to me. QUESTION: What type of fig has triangle/heart shaped leaves with jagged edges and large long 5 fingered leaves with 2 backwards curved spurs on the back on the same tree, usually on different branches? I was told they`re Celeste 4-pack (not by y`all) by another nursery. I hope to get a decent fig tree for the Louisiana humidity and some onions from you. I had planned to but had several budget-ruining emergencies including a crashed laptop & a terrible armadillo invasion in my garden. I threw a can of old green beans at one and he came back with friends to wipe out the rest of my vegetables. Very vindictive creatures!

Good afternoon hope all is well. I was wondering if you would be able to donate a few of your figs cutting. I'm a disabled veteran with Parkinson. My wife loves figs, and our 38-wedding anniversary is coming up and would like to grow some of these fig's cuttings to surprise her on this special date. I was told that this varieties will do well in my area of Parrish Florida. Like the I-258, White Madeira, Smith fig, Harry's Crete fig, Ischia Black, Ischia Green, Cravens Craving, Black Madeira We'll let me know if this is possible, your help is very much appreciated. May God bless you in your daily activities. Merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year's Thanks' Regards.

My potted fig is doing good but I'd much rather have it in ground, but my son doesn't like figs that much and doesn't want it taking up yard space. He cut down my brown turkey a few years ago and instead of arguing with him about the fig I'll just keep it in a pot. I'll probably have to up pot it this winter although it's in a big pot the tree itself has grown so much this year I'm concerned about it getting root bound. It loves the Agrothrive fruit and flower. No idea what cultivar it is as it was a gift from a friend who doesn't know either, and only a twig when I got it. I just a few days ago made nine pints of fig preserves from her trees and they are still loaded down with figs. You seem to have gone fig crazy, do you really like them that much or has it turned into a business for you?
